Goin' Hickory on us Nifty?

When I retire (14 months) I may look into a Hickory bag for A challenge. My first set was hickory shafted clubs.....handed down from my Grandfather.

I can still recall the feel of the shaft upon impact......terrific.

I've always thought it you be cool to see the pros do a woody tourney, having to use the old school clubs, hickory shafts and persimmon heads.

I had some woody clubs when I started playing

I hope the powers that be over here do not mind me mentioning this but here goes. there is a whole section on WRX devoted to hickory clubs. There are a lot of guys in that section that plays those hickory tournaments and are quite good with those sticks. Mr. Tad Moore whose clubs you have pictured is full time re manufacturing those sticks and is also refurbing original ones. He actually comes on there and has conversations with us on a regular basis. He is one of the regulars and his knowledge is something else. He has also given me some help on weighting and engineering on putters too. Those new hickories are fine crafted and take time to build right and they are rightfully so expensive

Note to MGS mods; If I have done something wrong in posting this please feel free to take it down and you will not offend me in any way shape or form Stu

Stu, I think you're fine posting that. This place isn't the Socialistic, paranoid, insecure place about a mention of another golf forum that the site you mentioned seems to be about it.

Skygolf is the same way...mention another forum too many times and boom, you're gone.

I know that left-leaners are rare on a golf forum, but I object to the pejorative connotation applied to the word "socialist."

I'm not pushing my man Bernie on anyone over here, so we should try to keep politics off the forum while we're all still getting along!

I'm positive nothing political was meant by whatever it was that upset you. I've posted this before, and I'll post it again......

We're all cool as far as I'm concerned.  I must have had a hyper-sensitive moment!

A deep dog bite, courtesy of my "best friend," ended my season before the first snow so instead of playing, I'm thinking equipment in a desperate effort to slow down the inevitable decline of my game as I get deeper and deeper into my "senior citizenship."  A few gym visits would help more, but that's not even part of the conversation.

As long as I'm entertaining / boring everybody with screen prints, how about some sticks that I played when I still had hair?  Those Top Flites predate both Ping Karsten 1s and the expression "cavity back irons," but there they are, complete with cavity backs. Most of the stuff in the bag with them is a little bit newer, not that much, because this rig gets an occasional reprise as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just out of curiosity how does a hickory shaft hold up to a quick swing or high swing speed? I have always wanted to give some hickory clubs a go for fun and have been afraid to pull the trigger since I cave in driver heads about once a season and have cracked quite a few persimmon clubs when I was younger. My fear is that after a few rounds I will have shafts that would be best used as kindling in the outdoor fireplace.

I played hickory with no problem in my first hand-me-down set, but I was twelve years old.

They don't come in X-flex, so if that's what you play.........

It is all the way through the bag. I am wondering if it like trying to swing an R flex where you just need to smooth it out and not hit it hard. I am now on the hunt for some reasonable priced hickory clubs to try out.

You definitely need to time the additional torque, but certain people (ie, Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen) were scary good at it.

How about amazing. :). They were amazing at it. Hagen and Billy Casper are the two most under rated players of all time IMO.

I've hit a hickory shafted 5 iron (when I was young). More recently I've played some shots with a 1920's Sarazen SW replica. That was fun but you'd need to go back to balata to really control it around the greens.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Ok from what I have gathered from Mr. Moore himself. If say you find some hickory clubs at a yard sale etc they need to be checked because if they are not pinned and only glued the glue is not anything like we have today and may have degregated. Depends on how they were taken care of during their life as to how dry the shafts would be and what aging has done to them. Same would be for wooden heads. Now far as stiffness there were different ways to make them stiffer I can remember my old man (he was born in 1913) and the old timers talking about certain soaking of the shafts and drying processes. But if you look at films of those early pro golfers swinging hickory they seem to swing fast. In your case if you are caving in metal heads I would get a new reproduction wood head to hit. I do know from what I have read on those forums different guys hit different modern balls with them mostly Wilson 50 compression and the like. And I do know of some of them finding balata balls and playing them with hickory. In fact I sold one of the guys a dozen mixed balata balls the other week. I am not an expert on hickory golf by any means just know what I read

Do you know who I should contact to replace a cracked hickory shaft in a putter?
