GET SUM

Kenny B

Recommended Posts

A lot of golfers on forums have been touting the Snell My Tour Ball as a quality 3-piece tour level ball at a reasonable price ($32/dozen).  I am one of them.  If you like the feel of a tour ball and want tour level performance, this is a ball that you have to try.

I am writing this thread to bring attention to Dean Snell's other golf ball; the 2-piece soft Surlyn covered GET SUM ball.  If you currently play a 2-piece ball, have a slower swing speed, need a little more height to your ball flight, or if you simply want to try a softer ball, you should give the GET SUM ball a try.

I have played the Snell My Tour Ball all summer and it is my go-to ball, but it is autumn now in the Pacific Northwest and temperatures are dropping. It's time to play "winter golf".  Let me define "winter golf" here in the TriCities, WA.  Contrary to popular opinion, it is not wet; that's Seattle, here it will be cold and dry.  Soon the temperatures will reach the 20-30's. Only the hearty golfers play during the winter.  For some reason these golfers are older and have enclosed, heated golf carts.  Except for being older, I'm not one of them.  I walk.  I stay warmer walking because I am dressed for it, but I digress.  Sorry.

My point is that in the winter the tour level ball does not play any better than a 2-piece ball. So why play an expensive ball if there is no performance gain.  What matters for "winter golf" is using a ball that has a soft feel so it won't feel like hitting a rock.  Landing a ball on the green will surely result in the ball being behind the green.  It won't stop, no matter what ball you use.  Now you have to judge how far in front of the green to land it so it stops on the green.  Old guys do this really well because they do it all year long!!  They don't generate enough spin to stop a ball even in the summer!

So, yesterday I played a round of golf at a course I don't play much.  I know the fairways and greens are firm, even in the summer.  The Snell My Tour Ball stayed in the bag; I pulled the Snell GET SUM ball.  On my last order of the MTB, I order a dozen GET SUM balls just to see how they played and if they might be my new winter ball.  I had a great round; 71 on a par 70 course.  Was it entirely the ball?  No, for some reason I had a great ball striking round, but the GET SUM was very predictable in its feel around the green.  No, it doesn't spin like a tour ball, but I found it easy to judge how it comes off the club.  Less spin produced longer, straighter drives than normal.  I knew it wasn't going to spin much on chips and pitches, so I played for it to roll out.  Here is what Dean Snell says about 2-piece balls and spin:

In past testing that I have done with a scratch golfer, I took a tour ball and a 2-pc golf ball and had him hit wedges.. he spin the tour ball 10000 rpm and launch angle was around 30 degrees... then with the 2-pc ball, his spin was 6000 rpm and 45 deg on the launch angle.. so the tour ball has almost twice the spin and launches much lower off the face.. this is why a lot of better players do not play 2pc balls.. they have a tough time of occasionally getting those fliers of high launch and lower spin and over the green... the tour balls slightly compress and roll along the face causing lower launch and higher spin.. the 2-pc balls will "slide" a bit more than roll, so they launch higher with less spin...

Although a few of you are scratch golfers or close to it, the rest of use don't generate that much ball spin.  So we compensate by playing a lot of bump-and-runs and pitches with lots of roll.  During the winter this is true for all of us in the north.  I am looking for a softer ball and the amount of spin around the green becomes less important because the ground firms up and no ball stops like it does in the summer anyway.  I think I have found it; I had a couple of birdies and a bunch of par saves.  The ball is soft enough off the club to let me feel the shot, but not squishy like I have experienced with the Wilson DUO.  It seems to be more like the Callaway Chrome Soft. Compared to the Snell My Tour Ball, I would say that besides less spin around the green and being softer in feel, the ball flies higher off the driver and certainly higher off the irons.  If you want the extra height, play this ball.  If spin is not that important to you for whatever reason, play this ball.  You really can't go wrong at $21/dozen.

Good write up Kenny. Of importance to me was your comparison to the Chrome Soft which I love. I'm going to take your recommendation and get a doz of the Get Sum.

Another good feeling 2-pc is the Lady Bridgestone. It's a surlyn cover I believe but has a nice soft feel. It'd probably make for a nice winter ball too.

HaHa PJ!  The Bridgestone Lady was my winter ball last year!!!  It is a great ball and it comes in YELLOW.  I still have a couple of sleeves.  My wife uses them in the winter to replace her yellow Srixon Z Stars.  When it gets colder, I will do a comparison of the Lady and GET SUM.

Dean Snell has commented in other threads that the Surlyn cover can be made in yellow, but the Urethane is difficult and expensive.  One of these days maybe we will see a yellow GET SUM.

I don't know Foz, you live in Florida and those courses have lots of water!  :)

I forgot to mention that I played the 3UP 2S14 ball alongside the Snell GET SUM ball last week.  The GET SUM is definitely longer and more predictable around the green.  I'm glad I don't have any more 3UPs.

I would be curious to know how the GET SUM plays in the Florida grass compared to the Snell My Tour Ball, particularly around the green.  I will certainly have both in my bag when I visit you guys in February.

Played the Get Sum last week.  Drives were definitely longer than the Titleist Trusofts and Maxfli Softfli's.....I even got a 240 yard drive on Sunday!  Haven't had one of those in a while.

I haven't ordered any new Snell balls yet. Something tells me they are going to redesign the logo. Like many others that's been the negative on the ball.

The Snell Get Sum is my ball for the next few months.  The last couple of rounds that I have played were with the Get Sum and the My Tour Ball.  Both Snell balls are great, but different.  Now that the temperature has dropped, the Get Sum is definitely longer and around the green, there isn't much difference anymore.  Greens are firming up and ball aren't stopping as well as a few weeks ago.  I have to play more roll out.  However, I have had a few low rounds of the year with the Get Sum, so  Get Sum has become my ball of choice because distance is now better than the My Tour Ball.  We do get occasional days when the temperature will hit the 60-70 range even in the winter; the My Tour Ball will be ready for those days.

I will be arriving in Orlando early morning on the red eye on Monday, Feb.1; renting a car and driving to somewhere up by St. Augustine.  I don't have a hotel yet, but it will be a Marriott.  My wife and I want to see the World Golf Hall of Fame.  We will probably play golf somewhere; my wife wants to play the LPGA National.  On Thursday Feb 4 we head back to Orlando to stay in our timeshare condo.  GOLF until we leave on Saturday Feb 13.

I am hoping that we can hook up and play during that time with Rev, Foz and anyone else over in Tampa/St. Pete.  I was hoping we could play sometime Feb 2-4 while we are on the east coast if you are available.  If not, maybe we could meet somewhere in the middle on a weekend.  Or maybe we could all go to Rev's house??  :)   I am open to suggestions; after all, it's a golfing vacation and it's MyGolfSpys!!

Check out what course availabilities come with your stay.  We can plan on driving over and playing with you.  Then, possibly we can get a foursome on at World Woods.  Either way, we will definitely put something together.

I don't think that any course deals come with the condo.  It's not on a golf course.  I've played maybe 6-7 courses in the area; all nice, but it was summertime when I played.  Anyone is more than welcome to come over anytime during my stay to play, but I was hoping to get over to Tampa/St. Pete to play.

I'll contact everyone when it get closer to travel time to see what your schedules are.  I'm on vacation; I'm flexible!

  • The side stamp on the MTB has also just been finalized and is undergoing USGA approval. We expect release of the new side stamp in late April and look forward to the improved alignment arrows.

I totally agree.  I didn't mind the Snell logo, but the new logo looks nice.  Optic yellow!  woo hoo!!

The Get Sum is my winter ball and here in the Northwest the winters can be graaaaay.  The optic yellow ball is much easier to see.  I have one sleeve left and when they are gone, I will be switching to the MTB since temps are climbing into the 60's now.  I have a dozen left which should last about a month.  I will be ordering the new MTB's and yellow Get Sum's.  I am not sure if I can get my wife to switch from the yellow Z-Stars, but it would be a BIG savings to me if she did!!

Anybody got a side by side comparison photo of the logos on the MTB? Old vs New.
