An Alternate Look at Set Configuration

Recommended Posts

In my pre-decrepitude era, I was able to play to an admittedly always tenuous eight. I'm going to call that fairly decent recreational golf, even if it is a tad self-aggrandizing. . Even when at my best, however, I was never very influenced by the scratch and plus-capper players when it came to set configuration.

Top level amateurs set up a bag very much like touring pros. Only two clubs fall into the category of shot-specific utilities--the driver and the putter. The other twelve clubs make up a linear loft progression often, in recent years, spanning 13 to 60 degrees.

I always leaned toward more shot specific utilities and fewer clubs in the general loft progression. Forget that the vintage set illustrated here fills up a fifteen slot cart bag. It's not the number of clubs that we're looking at here, but how they're divided.

This isn't a recommendation as such, but merely an example of what is possible going off the beaten trail. When your fairway shot span goes from 0 to 215 as opposed to 0 to 275, it may not be necessary to bag as many standard loft progression clubs. It may be possible to exploit favorite clubs for specific shots.

I miss H&B PowerBilt as a "serious" contender in the market. My first new clubs in 1959 were PowerBilt Citations.

Persimmon 2-wood

Laminated 3, 4, 5

#s 2-9 blades

no included wedges.

The four woods had pretty brass back-weights and brass pins rather than screws in the inserts,.

Their new stuff looks a bit on the horrific side.

I'm a strong advocate of going with a set up that fits my game and my primary course. I've been doing that for thirty years. That's when I took 2 iron out and put five wood in because my home course in CT required several high 220 yard shots.

Now that's a driver but when I was 30 it was a 5 wood. Yikes!

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Dead on it Rev-- I use what fits my game. I get questioned a lot as to why I carry a 7&9 woods and still carry a 4&5 iron. I hit different shots with each that fits my game profile. I also do not carry but 3 wedges of course I do use older irons with traditional lofts. LOL most modern guys their PW is darn near the loft of my 8 iron. But every one is different and they need to play whatever fits their game. Heck I have a friend of mine that the only two irons in his bag is his trusty Rusty wedges in 48 and 56 respectively. He carries a driver but no fairway metals but he carries only 5 hybrids but man can he utitilize them. He is in his mid 70s and plays every day weather permitting and shoots his age regularly from the senior tees. And yes age has a way of catching us with distance loss and to be honest with you for a while I had a problem dealing with the loss of distance but now I am dealing with it good. Yep I remember the 220 5 wood days with persimmon and balata

I know what you mean......I gamed the Black Citations 1, 2, 3 & 4 woods.......now they were a work of art....glossy back heads with brass sole plates and brass screws.
