shaft for Cobra Forged TEC

Hey guys!

I just went to a fitting yesterday for a new set of irons... the best results were:

 

1. Callaway Apex CF16 with PX 5.5

2. Callaway Apex Pro 16 and Titleist AP2 716 both with PX 5.5 as well

 

The Apex CF16 provided the best ball speed and distance (maybe due to the springier cup face technology?)

 

Anyways, I then saw the Cobra fitting cart and asked how come he didn't offer me any to try. He told me he still didn't have the new fitting tools, so I would only be able to try the Fly Z+ irons and since these haven been discontinued the chances of getting custom shafts are very slim.

 

So I hit the Fly Z+ with KBS Tour R+ just for the heck of it and it was giving me similar numbers as the Apex CF16, which is nice... since these will probably be thrown out with big discounts.

 

Then I researched some more and it seems like the Forged TEC will be replacing the Fly Z+ so it shouldn't be playing that differently, right?

 

The fitter said the PX 5.5 was the shaft for me, no doubt about it.

 

Now I'm tinkering with the idea of getting the Forged TEC with PX 5.5, even though I wasn't able to hit them at the fitting.

Yes yes yes, I know go get fit is the answer, but in this case it just wasn't possible

 

So would the suitability of the PX 5.5 on those 3 heads translate to the TEC head? Good idea? Stupid idea? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

 

Any experience comparison of the TEC vs Fly Z+?

Take this for what it's worth....when I was trying a few irons, the Apex cf16 was longer and felt like it came off the face hot. Then I went and looked at the lofts...the 7 iron is at 31*...that's my 6 iron. SO it made since why I hit it substantially further. As for the shafts, I had only played Project X shafts until my irons this year, where I tried KBS shafts. I didn't lose any distance but i just preferred the ball flight and feel of my Project X shafts, so i'm going back to them. It's tough for me to say if it's going to translate to the TEC Forged head, but I would assume it will work if it worked for you in the Apex Pro and AP2 heads. But like you, our Cobra fitting cart hasn't been "stocked" for this year yet, so unfortunately I haven't hit them either. But Cobra has stepped their game up lately so I want to say they're a safe bet. Bottom line after this long rambling post...all those heads are awesome and it is tough to wrong with any of them and I really enjoy my Project X shafts and if the fitter says they are good for you, go with them.

I did check the lofts and they are not traditional, that's for sure.

But I thought loft doesn't affect ball speed? Only launch angle and distance?

 

Indeed, the PX did lower my ball flight which was what I needed.

 

So I'm going out on a limb here... just putting 2 pieces that individually worked well for me... the PX shaft and the successor of the Fly Z+

I do believe you are correct on ball speed, I should have stated more clearly that loft isn't the only reason for more distance, ball speed is a big deal. I do like your proposed set up...if I didn't play WS, I would play Cobra.
