Golf "Skateboards" - Fun or Folly?

I've used a version of this - the GolfSkate Caddy - and gotta say, it IS a hoot! I'm 55, and can't see myself getting on one in 10 years, but for now, given the option I'd use one instead of a cart virtually every time.

GolfBoard: The future of getting around a golf course?

This isn't your grandfather's golf, or even your father's golf.

Over the last several years, the game has undeniably gone from dull to bold and from nerdy to hip. But these days, it's not just the fashion statements, the countless accessories, or the ways in which one can personalize his or her equipment. It has also trickled down to your form of transportation when on the course. Or, at least "tricked out."

You could go the natural route and hoof it. You can hoof it with a push or pull cart. You can hop in a motorized cart and drive from tee to green and everywhere in between.

Or, if you're looking for something with a little more flare and no doubt a whole lot more fun, you now have another option: the GolfBoard.

The what? The GolfBoard -- part, surfboard/skateboard/snowboard and part Segway.

Just last week, I had the opportunity to try out one of these things that you'd expect to see in a futuristic movie over 18 holes at Black Rock Country Club in Hingham, Mass.

After a 5-10 minute tutorial from Black Rock PGA Head Professional Mark Gammons, in which one in our group accidentally love-tapped a support beam on the clubhouse because he forgot to let go of the throttle, we "shredded" our way to the first tee with gracious host and Black Rock owner, George McGoldrick.

McGoldrick has been an early adopter of the GolfBoard. Right now, he himself owns two and a Black Rock member owns two more. Those were the four we took out for our round.

Over the next couple of years, McGoldrick is hopeful that Black Rock will have many more.

McGoldrick estimated our round that day was about the 40th of the year for him using the GolfBoard. Why does he love it so much? For starters, he thinks it carries many more benefits than a traditional motorized golf cart. First, your body is continuously moving between shots. In order to navigate the GolfBoard, you need to lean into turns just like on a snowboard or skateboard.

Because of this, a GolfBoard keeps the blood flowing between shots -- which was particularly nice on the cool day that we teed it up.

Also, rather than zig-zagging across the fairway to go to your playing partner's ball and then yours, the GolfBoard allows everyone to go directly to their own ball.

Weighing just 110 pounds, the GolfBoard is also markedly lighter than a traditional cart which should put a smile on the faces of course superindendents everywhere (once they get over the initial brow-raising when they first lay eyes on the GolfBoard, that is).

More than anything, though, the GolfBoard was just downright fun.

It took a little while to get the hang of turning, as well as how much pressure to apply to the throttle, but once you've got that down, it's like participating in two sports at once. And since it's so much fun and so different from anything you've experienced on a course, it's also much easier to forget about a wayward shot (or many, like I had that day).

Traction-wise, the GolfBoard was remarkable. The model we used featured four-wheel drive and it was easy to make it through wet spots and rough without slipping. With your clubs attached to the front of the board, a cupholder connected to the handlebars and a cooler attachment for the back, it's got everything you need.

As McGoldrick told our group, "There's nothing better than taking a caddie, but this is the next-best thing."

If you have safety concerns -- after all, the GolfBoard can be intimidating to look at upon first glance -- McGoldrick believes it's safer than a traditional golf cart. After having the chance to test one out, I'd agree and I'd also add this disclaimer: Like any other machine, if you don't respect the GolfBoard, there is a chance you can hurt yourself. If you don't use a cart, or the GolfBoard, the way they were intended to be used and something bad happens, that's on you.

Overall, the GolfBoard experience was one I hope to have again many times in the future.

McGoldrick noted, "Yeah, it looks weird at first and people might think it's strange to see them out on the course, but I'm sure people said the same thing about driving carts when they came out. I think this is the future of getting around a course."

If nothing else, it certainly looks like the future.

I was playing at my new course last week by myself.  I noticed on the par 3 #4 tee box, which is the highest point on the course, I could see a Golfboard coming down #3.  WTH?  I didn't know the course had these!  He followed me around until I got to #8 where I had to wait on a group in front of me, then he took off to the clubhouse.  I was playing slowly hoping he would catch me so I could check it out.  When I finished, I asked the pro who had the Golfboard.  He said it was the rep; he was gone when I got there.  Are they getting any for the course?  He said NO, mostly because of the cost and insurance.  My course has a significant number of mounds that were put in when the course was redesigned, and I could see that it would be quite fun coming off some of those, but I can also see a lot of people wrecking too.

A buddy is repping Golf Skate Caddy in MN -- says liability has been the biggest roadblock so far.  Courses are making it work by having users sign liability waivers and having users go through a 10 minute instruction session.  Several courses tried them out for a week at a time during the fall and found some success, with people even driving a couple of hours to a course that featured these things, just to try them.

Gotta say the few rounds I've played using the Golf SkateCaddy, you certainly get a lot of attention from other players -- they tend to be VERY curious.  And like I said, they're freaking FUN!

My biggest challenge was using them around on cart paths around greens and tee boxes - you do need some experience to maneuver them around those tight spots.

And I also learned that ball washers are VERY securely anchored in the ground.  It didn't give when I hit it...

I did inquire at the pro shop if they were considered "power carts" or "push carts" around the green. We have several holes with ropes and cart signs that route you to the cart path.  This guy was riding right up to the edge of the green.  But since we aren't getting them, it doesn't matter here.  I think the Aspen Lakes course in Sisters, OR got some last year and that's a course I like to play when we go to central Oregon.  I'm sure that where you can/can't ride will be covered in the 10 minute instruction/lesson.

Did you expect to give when you hit it?   :D

I sure hope this isn't the future of golf. Seems like over the past few years there have been so many; what I call goofy ideas being introduced to the game. I suppose some old codger said the same thing when motorized golf carts came on the scene back when. But these skateboard things just don't make sense to me. Did you see that old guy in the video? The one with the red Wilson Staff bag. Pretty sure that's Fred Funk.

There is one course by me where these would be great, cart paths are flat wide open there is another with cart paths winding up and down through forests of trees with some steep drops, no way I'm going through that on one of those boards, it is interesting enough in a riding cart.

But I like the idea as they could really speed up play.

Respectfully,
DHUCK WHOOKER

What could possibly make these a negative or detriment to the game? No one is forced to use them. Those that do will easily speed up the pace compared to sharing a cart and driving it to both players' balls. They will make the game more attractive to players, bringing in more revenue to courses that have them. What harm could it possibly do to the "future of golf? Just because something is new and different doesn't mean it's bad.

We had these at my club last year for 4 months......they were used but did not catch on enough to pay for themselves. I think most guys my age are a little steady on them. I tried them but gave up.

Found that it takes about 4 or 5 holes to really feel comfortable on one - but carts paths near the greens were still difficult for me to navigate even after two or three rounds.  My buddy, however, took to it like a fish water and it was no problem for him.

Courses around here that have tried them are charging a premium to use them, and one course reported that some people drove as far as 2 hours just to try them. If it turns out being a new revenue stream for courses to help generate additional income, all the better.  GolfSkateCaddy has a lease to own program and a revenue share program that makes it affordable for the courses to get some of these in their fleet.

It's an awesome option to have. I would make sure to bring my son to a course with them if they show up around here. He likes golf, but isn't totally hooked on it. He would want to go all the time if we had the skateboards available.

It was really cool to look back on the course and see a foursome skating around with their clubs. Probably sped up their play as well.

.........  I did, for a couple of holes, then I noticed my legs getting tired, it activated muscles that I forgot I had due to the constant balancing required to stay on top of the thing.  Cool concept but I prefer a golf cart...

Anyone else had a golf board round? At $6,500 they are a bit steep. But I've been eyeing one of these things.

The local rep is going to be at our course at the end of the month, and give a demo to everyone playing in our MGS (and others) outing at the course.   I don't know if anyone will be able to use it for the entire round, but we'll be definitely giving it demo ride.   I rode one at the PGAShow and it was kind of cool.

the big question for golf courses.   Would you (speaking to all players in general) be willing to pay an extra $20 over your normal greens/cart fee to use one for the round.

We had a local course try them, and they charged extra to use one instead of a cart.

They are not for old coots like me - when they say "surf the earth" they mean it! I was so stiff I couldn't move, and more worn out than if I'd carried my clubs.

They didn't keep them around for long after the novelty wore off...

Maybe 40 years ago I could see myself getting liquored up and giving one of these puppies a ride.   No more as I could see my self breaking all sorts of stuff including my arse.

That's the one thing I have heard from those that have tried them at other courses, that it's mostly a novelty thing, and not something you'd do regularly.    So I could see a resort type course with nice views like a Torrey Pines, Pebble Beach, Hiltlon Head or one of those type offering them and people willing to pay extra for the neat experience.    But it's hard to see our average customer that comes out to play shelling out an extra $20 or so for the fun of it.

Prices are stupid high. I think I could build my own for $6500. In fact I might try that.

Ya got that right, my friend.  Us old coots have got to know our limitations.   I can see my obit now:   The Wahoo left us yesterday.  He left us as he lived, refusing to recognize his life's tenure, he died trying to ride a skateboard.  In memory of the Wahoo, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that you go to your favorite course and play from the senior tees.
