Orlando FL trip Feb. 1-13

Kenny B

Recommended Posts

I've mentioned this in other threads but thought I should post on its own.  My wife and I are headed to Orlando FL in a few weeks for our annual golf trip to someplace warm.  We've been to Orlando a few times before, but only in conjunction with meetings that I attended at the Renaissance Sea World.  We did manage to play a few courses though, but this time we are spending a couple of weeks.

Feb 1 -  Arrive at 5am in Orlando; travel to St. Augustine

Feb 2-4  -   Visit World Golf Hall of Fame;  Play golf

Feb 4  -   Back in Orlando at condo

Feb 5-12  -   Play golf

Feb 13  -   Fly home

On Feb 1 we will drive from Orlando to St. Augustine and stay at the World Golf Village Renaissance.  Have to see the World Golf Hall of Fame; according to Gary Player, "If you love golf, you've got to go!"

On Feb 4 we travel back to Orlando where we have booked a condo until we leave on Feb 13.  We have no specific plans except to play golf.

I have contacted Rev and Foz about getting together and we are open to play anytime before we leave.  I hope to meet anyone that can make it during that time.  Send me a PM.

Still working on next winter; it's either AZ, Palm Springs, Hawaii, or Texas.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Kenny--just sent you a PM about joining you at WGV.  Also, about the possibility of you and your wife joining me on the Stadium at TPC Sawgrass just a little bit north of WGV.

I am going to Orlando from the 17th-21st. Glad I looked at this.  Would have completely forgotten to go to World Golf Hall of Fame.  Can anyone recommend a course to play?  Price not really a factor.  Just want to go to a good one.  Anyone in the area at that time, message me too.  Maybe we can get a game.

Around Orlando?--don't ask me.  Around St Augustine, and WGV?--I can help you.  WGV is at least 90 minutes from Orlando, so not real close.

No promisez, but it looks like I may be scheduled to return home from Orlando to face 5+ inches of blown snow on "country roads.". If that doesn't change within a week, I might just see if I can change my flight and spend a few more days in Orlando!

We are actually not going to be in Orlando Feb 1-4.  We are staying at the Renaissance World Golf Village in St. Augustine.  Since we arrive on the red-eye at 5am on Feb. 1, we will head to the World Golf Village.  The Hall of Fame admission is good for 2 days so we will go there until we drop and then head to the hotel.  Take it easy the next day, maybe hit the practice area, and go back to the Hall of Fame if we don't see it all on Monday.

We have tee times for Wed and Thu, Feb 3 and 4 at the Slammer & Squire and the King & Bear.  Since this will be our first rounds of golf during the trip, I am not expecting much.  It will take me several days to get used to Bermuda grass!!

Kennyb, I hope to get us setup for World Woods. I have not heard from Rev yet, to see if he has any suggestions....We could play at my club (Pebble Creek) but it is not in "resort condition". I live across from Saddlebrook Resort, which has two tracts, one of the designed by Palmer. I know the GM very well, and could get us on for reasonable rates. Google Saddlebrook Resort and check it out.

Thanks foz.  I'll look it up.  I am looking forward to meeting and playing with you guys.  My wife and I really don't care that much about playing the fabulous resort courses.  In fact, the more it costs, the worse my wife plays.  :)  She has this thing that golf shouldn't be very expensive.  I am sure most every course in Florida is as good or better than the ones we play.

We are only playing the courses at the World Golf Village because we got a great deal, otherwise we would have looked for more affordable courses.  Remember, we are sort of on a limited budget and this is a two week trip!!  The idea is not to play the expensive, fabulous courses, but to play golf in warmer weather than we have at home.  It had better warm up there because it was 60* here yesterday!

We are open to play most any day after we return to our condo on Feb 4, so I would say that we are probably more flexible in our schedule that you and Rev.  Let us know what works best for you guys and we will accommodate.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Then we could play at my club, cost is minimal, Pebble Creek Golf Club, but it has challenges with water on 17 holes. Today I played with a gentleman from London, England and two more from Northern Michigan. All three were very pleased with my club.

Sorry HF, I leave the 13th.

Got in to Orlando at 4:30am. After a hassle with the rental car agency, we drove to the World Golf Village. Checked into the Renaissance hotel at 9:30am; got upgraded to a mini-suite. Took a 3 hour nap after being up for 24 hours, then went to the Hall of Fame.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1454365102.572663.jpg

Spent 4 hours there. Will go back again tomorrow since we didn't see it all; big Bob Hope exhibit. We will spend a few hours at the Slammer & Squire practice facilities learning what not to do on Bermuda.

Kenny let me know the tips on playing in Bermuda, I'm headed to Myrtle Beach on Saturday.

It's been about 8 years since I played in Florida.  I was in AZ about 15 months ago, but the Bermuda is slightly different there; ground is firmer. I already know some differences, but it's getting used to it that takes me a little time.

  1. Ball striking is paramount; I am not the best at it, and a little fat and the ball doesn't go nearly as far as you think it should. It seems like there is no ground under the ball.  On hard fairways I can get away with it with a shallow angle of attack.
  2. Chipping into the grain is a ******; just look at what Tiger did.  Looked like me.  It's also the reason that a bump and run into the bank by the green doesn't work; the ball just stops.  At home it pops up and rolls onto the green.
  3. Putting is how I usually can save a round of not-so-good ball striking, but the grain of Bermuda screws up my reads.  Faster down grain; slow into the grain; sharp breaks as the ball slows as it approaches the hole.  I lose my confidence on speed, and speed is everything.

It's not bad the longer you play on it, but it just takes me awhile to get the feel of it.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I'm going to keep posting my experience during the trip.  We will be playing the Slammer & Squire on Wed;  King & Bear course on Thursday.  Unfortunately, it's supposed to rain both days!  Bummer!

Basically a free day to relax after the red-eye flight. Spent most of the day at the Slammer & Squire practice facility.

Putting was not too bad; better than I thought. Chipping OK too. Bunkers were fabulous! Maybe tomorrow I'll spend most of the day in bunkers on the course.

Did you get to have a go at the 18 hole Putt Putt next to the WOG?

Last thing we did today; probably shouldn't have done it; greens were reeeally slow.  The only reason we did it was the freebie with the Hall of Fame ticket.  I will need more time in the morning before we play just to get the speed right again.  BTW, I beat my wife by one shot; only birdie of the round for either of us.

We also got a free shot at the island green; 142 yards into a pretty strong wind.  Monthly winner gets a prize. whee!  I got in on the green; my wife didn't.  I don't think I will be winning anything, but I was happy to get it there.

We will play Slammer & Squire tomorrow.  Rain is supposed to come in late.  Thanks Foz!!

I would probably put this in the How'd you play? thread, but I wanted to keep my play on this trip all together.

My wife and I played the Slammer & Squire on Wed in perfect weather. My game wasn't so perfect ☹️. I shot 86 with 3 doubles and a triple. All of those involved 3-putts. I just couldn't get a feel for the greens, even with a day's practice on Tue. Nice course though.

On Thu we were supposed to play with jaxbeachpackerfan at the King & Bear course. He had work come up so he didn't make it. I was looking at the weather and didn't think we had a chance. We were supposed to tee off at 10:58 and if you saw the rain at the lpga event in Ocala yesterday, that's what it would have looked like when we would have made the turn. However, we went to the course at 8am and they let us go at 8:44. We finished the round about 10 min before the "heavy stuff" came down. I shot 82 with 8 bogeys on the back nine; one birdie. I liked the grass a lot better vs the S&S. Putted better too.

After the round we drove to Orlando to our condo where we will stay until we fly home. This morning we woke up to sunshine, wind, and cold. Felt like back home; I thought Florida was supposed to be warm? We decided to play golf; I would at home!

We went south to the Royal St. Cloud Golf Links. It's sort of linksy style golf. It's inexpensive but nicely laid out; 3 nine holes. We played the blue/red nines. Obviously because of the price, the course gets lots of play. Sand is provided in the carts but nobody fills their divots. The reason is they push you along. We played with two guys from Canada and did the first nine in 2:10: stopped at the turn to pee then head to the red nine. Two groups were waiting for the tee and the starter said he had to put a group ahead of us. We waited on every shot and played the second nine in 2:40. They were just cramming too many groups on the course. I shot an 84 with a snowman on a par 4; don't ask!! I had one chip in birdie.

Tomorrow is a rest day. I think we will head back to the coast for a round on Sunday at the LPGA Int'l.

More later.
