Playing lessons

Recommended Posts

I had a conversation yesterday with my instructor/coach/friend. I suggested that we get out soon and play either 9 or 18. I suggested that he observe and make notes about my game. That way I think he might better understand how I play. My thinking is... there's practice time - instruction with him and then there's me out on the course actually playing. Two different animals in my opinion. I told him we need to play for something such as lunch afterwards. (with a few strokes you know. Ha) I feel this will help both of us greatly. Have any of you guys done this? Was it helpful? Do you think it helped your instructor? Did it help you in any way?

I've had a few playing lessons with my coach. It's always been helpful for me because he can see where I'm struggling or if I'm not doing certain things when the score matters.

I plan to schedule some rounds together this Spring with the instructor I took lessons from last year.

I don't know that I can actually call them "playing lessons," though.  I'm sure he'll offer me some observations and tips on my game, but we haven't really called the rounds "lessons."  We'll just be, more or less, two old farts on a golf course enjoying ourselves. ;)

Yes... I'm not necessarily calling mine a "lesson". I'm wanting him to observe and gather information. Unless I ask. Which I'm sure I will. But... we'll play a competitive match. That usually brings out the gremlins in my game.

My instructor lives in OKC and spends the winter in Florida teaching, so no chance.  There isn't any pro in my area that I would trust to make comments about my swing on the course or off.

I played a round this last year with a pro/instructor that gave me my first lesson 23 years ago.  We played on the first course I ever played; beat him by 2 strokes!  He's a great guy, but even he doesn't understand my swing.

When I lived in Wisconsin my instructor was a member of my church.  I played with him several times and it was very helpful.  Not only could he give me course management advice but he was able to recommend a couple of drills to help with some areas that I was struggling with on the course.  We'd always play a match, he'd give me 2 a side which was just about right at that time.

Here we have a teaching pro and the club pro - they are two different animals.  I've had lessons from the teaching pro and played nine with the club pro.  I like both of them but the club pro only give me his impressions on how he plays certain holes.  He wouldn't say anything about my swing because he didn't want to mess with what the other pro was teaching.  :)

About 3 years ago, I invested a tidy sum for a series of lessons with GolfTec.....After about 4 or 5 lessons, we scheduled a 9 hole playing round.....It was very promising......I played very well that day.  I was pleased that the lessons culminated with a playing round, then back in the training area the next week to review.  I stopped GolfTec shortly thereafter, then my instructor left.....and time moved on.

  • 1 month later...

My hour long lesson today lasted about twenty minutes. I hit a few shots, he videos me, we went in and looked, inside loop was way less pronounced, he said, "I know what to do," we went back to the range, he said try and hit the ball with your right shoulder, I hit five perfect 7 irons followed by five striped drives and he said, lesson over, you and I are playing a round next time, no charge, so that I can make sure you're bringing this to the course.

I took my laser out and shot the flag that I was flying it past and realized that I was flying my seven iron 155, prior to my lessons starting I would fly it around 140-145. I'm killing my driver, just killing it for me. Best of all every shot is starting to look the same.

But isn't that just plain boring golf? I mean, hitting shot after shot that look the same. It's way more fun to hit it all over, at least by hitting it all over you get to be like a kid and use your imagination.

I imagine those boring shots all the time.  They just don't happen all the time.

I like boring on the golf course.  Looking for golf balls and seeing those exciting places on the course are what playing partners are for! :)

Like life I find that I play my best golf when I'm helping other people find something rather than trying to trouble shoot for myself.

Believe me, you want this especially if you are playing a tournament. You want consistent, dependable shots.

Exactly Rev. My guy last fall said almost the same thing to me. I've gotten away from it recently. I'm going to work on it this this week. I bet my ball striking will improve. Thanks for the reminder.

I treat every round like a playing lesson. Which is why I am constantly, well until recently, adjusting my swing or changing the bag.

I was finally happy with both my swing and bag. But the soon to come Mizuno JPX EZ Forged will change the bag.

But I am still happy with my swing. But after every round I do an after action review and look at what I did well and what I didn't. The surprising thing from the last 5 rounds is a -1 on the first three hardest holes and a + 17 on the next three holes that are actually much easier.

It's like we concentrate really well on the more difficult holes, but relax a bit when you get through them, Causing the dreaded PBFU (post birdie screw up). I do this all the time, birdie #1 hcp, then double the next. I've really been trying hard to take deep breaths, relax and play one shot at a time, don't worry about the next one, or the last one, focus on this one. One shot at a time, one swing at a time, putting the really good par, or birdie behind you can be difficult, but being able to get focused on the next shot a quickly as you can is important. I like the way you go through and assess the round, focusing on what you did well, and not so well, in order to be able to work on the part of the game you struggled with that day
