Shorts for Tour Players

The European Tour approved a new regulation allowing players to wear shorts during practice rounds at their events on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.  Support of the change seemed to be split among players and some traditionalists.  Rex Hoggard on the Golf Channel posted 5 reasons why this is a good idea for pro-ams.

Should the PGA change their rules?

I say YES

If you've ever been to the Byron Nelson or the Colonial here in Texas in the middle of May then you'd definitely say yes! Having said that, I doubt that it'll be changing any time soon.

Absolutely yes!

I'd even vote for letting them wear shorts during events. Having to wear pants is pretty arbitrary to begin with. They could even tie to a temperature. If it's over 80 or 85 let them wear shorts.

I've said for years the PGA should let Pros wear shorts if they want to. I mean come on. Like Ethan said... I've been to Colonial several times and my clothes were stuck to my body. Obviously the LPGA has no dress code. Christina Kim? LOL But let the PGA guys wear shorts. And... if it were me I'd also have my caddie tote a carry bag with a stand like we use. Ever been to Augusta? Would you like to carry a giant 400 lb.Tour bag around that course for a week?

And here I was....about to suggest going back to neckties.

Ryan Moore has already done that.  Might be an interesting look wearing shorts.

Still never figured that out.  LPGA players have shorts with their ass hanging out, but PGA players have to wear pants.

I disagree- not very professional. With the new technology and lightweight fabrics out there it isn't bad wearing pants when it's 90* with 95% humidity.

Still better to be wearing the same material but in shorts

I'm not sure on this, part of me says what does it matter, but another part says, no they should wear pants, then after I golf in the heat of the Charlotte area, I think they should be wearing shorts, it's just not comfortable in pants when it's that hot.

Remember guys, the European Tour is only allowing shorts for practice and pro-am rounds.  I think the PGA should allow that, at least.

Not trying to jack Kenny's thread ... but I did notice a caddie last weekend carrying a stand bag for a guy on the Champions Tour. You'd know the player... just can't remember right now.

Sadly.. no shorts.

Since it's my thread, I say that I'm not being jacked.  I think it's related.

I remember seeing the bag, but don't remember the name.  However, being that the tournament was in Hawaii, there is probably a lot less stuff that the caddie has to carry.  I actually don't think the pros need to have a huge bag for most tournaments; it's mostly for the sponsor's logo.  That said, I know from having a caddie at Bandon Dunes that they don't mind the larger bag; it's not all that hard to carry.

I was such an idiot when I went to Bandon. Not sure what I was thinking.... but I hauled my cart bag with me. LOL  - I remember when we arrived at the course and met the caddie he immediately walked into a room where they were hanging out -  and returned with a empty stand bag in his hand. Needless to say; I didn't see my cart bag for three days. I assume they keep a few bags around for when guys like me show up.

What did you have in your bag, rocks?  Both my wife and I had cart bags.  They had no problem with them.  When we went out to practice putting on the green, the two caddies came out to our bags and started pulling clubs out of both bags.  We walked over to them and one caddie said: "OK, which one's the chick bag?"  They couldn't tell; my wife was playing men's TaylorMade clubs.

We were told that we could get one caddie that would carry both bags, or we each could get our own caddie.  Same price.  If it's the same price, why would I want to share a caddie?  One caddie carrying two cart bags?  Now, that would be tough.

My brother and I played Pebble a few years back, and when we met our caddie on the first hole, he took one look at my brother's bag, and grabed a lighter carry-bag.  Mine was not a tour bag, so he carried mine.  One caddie + two bags = one very large tip.

There is no spoon.

My bag at the time was a Titleist cart bag. But pretty light weight actually. The caddies double-bagged each round we played. And, it worked out well. If I go back I may ask for my own caddie. Assuming the price is the same. One thing nice I recall was when we played the par-3 course they loaned each of us a Ping Moon bag to carry. After that trip I bought one as my practice bag.

  • 2 weeks later...

There is a funny book about being a pro looper on the European tour called "Maybe it should have been a 3-iron.". In it, our hero picks up a last minute job, thrilled the player is carrying his own Sunday mini-bag. After he agrees to be his caddy, the pro says, "Good. I go back to car and get my staff bag."
