Obvious but....

A discussion on the Hogan Hybrid thread along with all the preposterous new equipment claims are causing this thread.  I'm sure most who populate the forum are aware of this but sometimes the obvious isn't so obvious to everyone so here goes.

Since 2000 (the advent of the Pro VI) there have been 9 different players to be world number 1:

Tiger

Vijay

Lee Westwood

Martin Kaymer

Luke Donald

Rory

Adam Scott

Jordan Spieth

Jason Day

This means that Nike, Cleveland, Ping, TMag, Mizuno and Titleist have had runs as the primary club maker for the World's top player.

Bottom line - The OEMs all make pretty good stuff any claims that theirs are somehow better than anyone else is preposterous - everyone on tour would use something that was light years better - it happened with the Pro VI until the other OEMs quickly caught up with their ball.

Also when you consider the make up of the bags of these players there are those who bag one fairway wood and long irons, others that bag a lofted fairway wood (Vijay's 7 wood, late Tiger's 5 wood), others who bag a hybrid or utility iron (Jordan Spieth).  The top end of the bag - 250 for them - 200 for us is a matter of preference and not an absolute - Jaxsbeachpacker fan may hate hybrids and prefer long irons, Nifty may hate long irons and hybrids and prefer a 7 wood, I may hate long irons and fairway woods and prefer hybrids or for that matter a mix and match approach - the key is to have a club to hit well 80 percent of the time from 200, one that can put the ball on the green or at least in a playable spot most of the time.

One last note - I love that Callaway hasn't had a world number 1 in a while almost as much as I like the fact that their highest ranked player uses the Pro VIx - I actually bag a couple of Callaway clubs but it's fun to see the big boys sweat a bit. :)

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Please step away from the edge, we can talk about this.

I am pretty sure that 6 of those number 1 players used the Pro V1. And many players now use hybrids not so much because they can't hit long irons or fairway woods, but to fit certain distances and get a certain amount of spin and height.

Rev you know you made me think for a minute because I never gave any thought at all to what equipment various #1 players played. What the pros play has never influnenced me at all. Popularity has not either. I play something because I like it. I am not really brand loyal either. I guess I am to some extent because I do collect and play Macgregor clubs but if I find something I like and hit better then I will go to that. Actually truthfully Miura is lurking in my future. Also I am not a brand hater either. You also have me racking my brain trying to think what Callaway staffer is playing the ProV because I noticed that the other day when they were putting and for the life of me can not remember who I saw

It's Stenson that uses the V1x.

No, well, Stenson does use Titleist Pro V. But he uses TMag Driver, and Callaway irons, hybrid, FM, Odyssey Putter and Cleveland wedges. But this is his first week back after knee problems and he is in Abu Dhabi.

it was last week, and I noticed it also. Kevin Kisner, Callaway driver, FM, Hybrids, and irons. and Titleist Wedges, putter and ball,

I remember the ad VJ done when Cleveland was bought by Srixon and he went to the Srixon ball.  " I quit playing the number one selling ball in golf to play a better ball" Priceless. Now he is playing the Hopkins ball and if it is no better than the wedges I feel for him. I did some trading and ended up with a set of Hopkins wedges talk about junk! The only redeeming quality is that they have KBS wedge shafts in them and I can pull those and use them in something or trade the Hopkins off. Sorry for the sidetrack and rant this early

Jax- It might mean that Cally is due, especially with Phil changing his swing!

Or maybe Edel can make a run when Deachambeau goes pro, the way he was playing in Dubai ( if they can keep him, he will draw big $$, but he's also a different type of kid who might just sign for a driver)

I had to poke fun at Callaway point being they all make good stuff. Additionally I will be clear that I don't believe for a moment that guys on tour "can't" hit certain clubs. It is much more of a question of what do they hit better. Again though the point being that there is no uniform fit.

I also believe hat Lydia Ko also uses or used to use a pro v ball as well. I think the issue is that Callaway hasn't put out a really good tour ball in a few years, I think their hope is he new 4 pc Chrome Soft. I think the last rally good one was the black, but I think it was really the tour i Series that were the best for them

I agree quite a bit with the good preacher's words, but would add that I don't hate either long irons or hybrids.

I used to carry long irons as a younger man, actually got a 1-iron with my 1983 Wilson 1200GE set, and have a 19º Epon driving iron in my bag this very day.

But I'm a flat swinger, and long irons from the deck are the specialty of tall, young, strong, upright swingers who can hit them high enough.  I discovered the high loft fairway woods early on.  By the time the TaylorMade FireSole Rescue hit the market, I had replaced my long irons (with the possible exception of one driving iron) already.

It is very easy to picture a scenario where I hung on with the long irons a little longer and was still trying to hit them when the hybrids came out.  Now it's very easy to imagine my becoming intrigued with the hybrids as they improved and it's almost certain that I'd be hitting them as a senior player.

Does anybody really hate a style of golf club that works well for somebody else?  Or do we just like to kiddingly tease each other about our relative levels of machismo?
