Forum Member Review: Callaway Chrome Soft with TRUVIS

Recommended Posts

When Callaway originally introduced the Truvis design of their Chrome Soft, I chalked it up to one of their marketing gimmicks.  Secretly, I was intrigued.  But not intrigued enough to buy a dozen...

Well, I was at the PGA store the other night and they're clearing inventory in order to make room for the new inventory and saw they had discounted them to $31.99 a dozen.  The familiar soccer ball look peeking through the box, I decided "heck with it" and picked up a box to try.  The next morning, upon arrival to the course I told my regular foursome "you might laugh at me, but I'm going to try a new ball today.  I won't even be marking it".  When I pulled it from my pocket, they knew why...

From then on, we referred to it as the soccer ball.  I'll admit, I had some reservations about it.  How would I focus on the ball with all these red dots?  And then I hit the first tee ball of the day.  Striped it down the middle with a slight draw leaving me 112 to a back left pin.  I pulled it just a little and had a 15 footer from the collar: 2 putt par.  Second hole, dead center, 10 feet below the hole, 2 putt par.  3rd hole, I hit it right at the flag.  We just knew it'd be a kick in, but was 8 feet past the hole (pin was up front and in that location, a 3 foot putt is a tricky putt cause it picks up speed even at the hole.  Roll the 8 footer 4 feet by and make the comebacker... Hole 4, STRIPE my drive as good as possible.  Hit it to 6 feet, birdie.  The rest of the round went on and I hit a whole lot of solid shots (some not to solid, but most were solid and where I wanted them to go).  I may have had a good ball striking day, those happen.  But something happened with THIS ball that normally doesn't.  I found myself focusing on a single spot on the ball from address through impact, and I believe the Truvis tech really helped with that.  You have to focus in on the ball with these because that's what the dots make you do, or they did me.  Laugh all they want at my soccer ball, but they owed me $35 at the end of the round and I didn't lose a single ball.  I liked them so much I ordered a few more dozen.  And I'll buy another 6 dozen before it's over with to add to my stockpile.

Was it the ball?  A second round might tell the tale, but for now, after the results I had from the 1 round, I'm sold.

A few pics of a new one with a club in it for reference:

I saw a guy today in another group play one, and I immediately thought that I could not stand to look at it.  I can see though what you mean by focusing on a spot; hadn't thought of that.

Nice round!  I hope it wasn't a one-round stand.

Were you playing the Chrome Soft before or was this the first time you played it? What are your thoughts on how the ball played?

I play the Chrome Speed (the unreleased Cally ball) from ther lineup. The ball plays well. Couldn't say how well I could control the spin off the wedges as the course was wet from recent rains so it was mostly plugging

I'm interested to try the new ball. Right now I'm blown away with the new Duo-U so I'll have to see how the two play side by side.

I played these a lot last season, and I really like them, I think there is another review thread on these somewhere. I would really like to try the new 4 pc, but of course the price went up, the new ones are $41, so I'm not buying, I am waiting for the new MTB to come out in April to buy those.

The truvis ball is really, really really extremely hard to see when playing dormant Bermuda.

I can't do the Truvis balls. Just gets to me. However, I played with a guy last weekend and he had some sort of Nike ball that was green. I commented during our round at how well I could see it. Especially during flight. For me...I'm not playing it. I just like white.

I accidentally bought 2 dozen of these in a store on a Pinehurst vacation January (just saw the chrome soft on sale and grabbed them, had no idea about truvis). When I pulled 2 sleeves out to put in my bag I was so upset, mainly because I knew the group I was with for the weekend was going to give me hell. That first round we were playing Pinehurst No. 2 and even the caddies gave me crap for then. I had a similar experience, however, when i piped my first drive and continued with my best ball striking day in a very long time (and the next day wasn't bad). There was also never any doubt which ball was mine when walking up on a group which I enjoyed. I do agree it may have helped my focus on the ball My putting though was awful the whole weekend and I found it distracting. I am not sure if the poor putting was because of the oddness of the balls appearance or just playing bad on tough greens, but it soured my experience on the balls either way. I have tried a few rounds with them at home and still like the ball striking aspect, but for some reason they still distract me on and around the greens when I am visualizing or focusing on the roll of the ball.

I use the side stamp as my alignment when putting. It's not distracting to me at all when putting

Ok, I need to add to this review after yesterday.... Do not, under any circumstances, try to play this ball when alcohol is involved.  Those spots really do start moving... I had to change out balls yesterday.

The alcohol comment made me laugh. Out loud. Hope you enjoy your next day out with your sobriety balls.

I play the chrome soft in plain white. And I ball wash the hell out of them at the tee when so much as a grass smear gets on em. Good ball though.

I bought a dozen of these balls last summer.  I liked them, but i didn't think they helped all that much.  When the dozen was gone, I went back to white Chrome Softs.  That's when I noticed the difference.  The white was harder to see in the air and my putting went down hill.  I missed my soccer ball!

I ended up buying another dozen and mentioned to my children that they would make good Christmas presents.  I got another two dozen for Christmas.  I'm set for a good part of the summer with soccer balls.

I have to admit, I like using yellow golf balls, so even though I don't like the cost, I will be buying the new yellow and black ones to put into play this weekend. I think I said it in another thread, but I really like the truvis for putting, I don't like alignment AIDS, I always feel like if I don't get the line perfectly set to where I want to go I will start the ball off line. With the soccer ball I seem to be distracted enough to focus a bit more, I don't like to use straight lines for lining up my putts, so the soccer ball pattern fits in to my twisted up mind.

I love yhe chrone soft and picked up a box of the yellow (not soccer ball).

I love the feel and today learned how much spin I get from 140 and in. Exammple two shots from 100 spun 10 n 14 ft back. Haven't had that much fun in a long time. The great news is the ball isn't even scuffed. Now to learn to lessen the spin as needed

Will try the yellow n black when the come in.

Funny you bumped this. I just got a dozen today in the mail.

A few weeks back, I found a green/white one in the tall stuff when I was looking for my ball. It's been my slump buster ball since I found it. Even used it to turn a poor front 9 around to break 80 for the first time.

Naturally, I went on eBay and found a mixed dozen to stock up on luck. The one I found had mostly yellow/black with a few green/white and one blue/white. Very cool balls. I've found that the graphics help the most on putts. It gives great feedback on the quality of roll plus it helps me see the line better.

One big thing I noticed is the unique iterations of these balls are MAJOR collectors items. There's some big bucks to be made on the resale so I highly recommend stocking up on the American flag balls once available.

Here's some examples of what I mean:

I was speaking with a Callaway rep a while ago and we were talking about these balls.  He said that when they first released them they allowed companies to add their logo on the ball but you had to buy some outrageous amount like 120 dozen...they sold out in about a week and couldn't make the non-logo balls for a while and the shop he worked out couldn't get any in.

I agree with you on the flag balls - those are going to be keepers and will probably sell out ASAP.
