Trip to Palm Springs

I'm headed to Palm Spring/Indio area for a few days this week. Any suggestions on courses to play? Hidden gems? Hopefully we can get out to PGA West and possibly the Marriott course, but any others that are a must play?

There are so many great courses in the Palm Springs area.  Which Marriott course?  Desert Springs or Shadow Ridge?  Are you staying at the Marriott?  If Desert Springs, I prefer the Palm course.

Desert Willow has two nice courses.  So does Terra Lago; I stay there in the timeshare condo right next door to their two courses.  I liked the Mountain course at La Quinta too.  If you want to play a linksy type course without trees, Cimarron by the airport is fun; home to the Dave Pelz short game school.

So many to chose, but every time we go, we have to play Indian Canyons - North course.  Think 1960's style homes, Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Frank Sinatra.  Lots of Nostalgia.  The South course is newer and a little funky and not my favorite.

Have fun!!  Wish I could join you.

We actually stay in the same place as you and play most of our rounds at Terra Lago. I love the North course there. The South course seems to be not as well taken care of and a couple of the holes piss me off, so i prefer the North course. I'm pretty sure Shadow Ridge is the one we played, but it was a few years ago. I think that is the one we'd play again. I've been told by multiple people to play the mountain course so maybe we'll head out there. I just looked up Indian Canyons too looks fun and hard to beat for the price.

There are just so many courses there I don't know where to start!

I spent a week in Palm Springs in January (9 days, actually, we couldn't get home because of the blizzard back east).  I really like both courses at Desert Willow, I think Firerock may be a little tougher.  We were really surprised by Eagle Falls, which is right near TerraLago, kind of behind the casino.  A really nice layout in very nice shape.  Silverrock is really good, right against the mountains.  Classic Club was perhaps our favorite, good, tough, excellent service, good condition.

Have fun!

Are you going to be there Saturday March 12?  Check out Desert Willow GC.

Desert Dunes is a terrific course in Desert Hot Springs. However don't book in advance. Check the wind forecast first. It is a desert links style course and when the wind is up it is totally unprotected. First time I played there it was blowing 40 and completely unplayable. It is enjoyable up to about 20 mph and no more. It can be had cheap too. Robert Trent Jones Jr. design. Another fun course is Escena in Palm Springs. Fun to play. Wide fairways. Par 3's are tough. 3 play to over 200 yds. Clubhouse is awesone nouveau 50's retro design. Others mentioned are good as well. For Desert Willow I'd only recommend Firecliff. The Mountain View course is pretty ho-hum. Overall Desert Willow is nice but somewhat overpriced IMO. And I didn't like their clubhouse food. As of right now Classic Club is still in "in season" pricing so its pretty expensive. But it is a great course. Maybe my favorite in the Coachella Valley. Also love SilverRock.

I've played Desert Dunes and didn't really care for it.  It wasn't that memorable for me, because I don't remember any specific holes.  I did like La Quinta Mountain course.

I hear ya.  Different strokes for different....  What I learned to appreciate about DD is that it forces you to figure out and adopt a strategy pretty quick.  If you are someone in the habit of pulling out driver just because you won't enjoy it.  Not saying that's you but it took me a few trips around there to fully appreciate what it was asking of the player.

Maybe I didn't like it because it reminds me of so many courses in my area; therefore, not distinctive.  There are so many courses in the Palm Springs area that I have played that I can picture features of the course.  DD isn't one of them.

I pull driver on every hole that is not a par 3, and I may do it on long 3's.  That wasn't always the case, but it is now.  I need every yard off the tee I can get, but I rarely worry about missing fairways.  It happens, but I am no more accurate with any other long club in my bag so I might as well be as far as possible.

Too bad you couldn't get onto the north course. The holes by the clubhouse and around the water are pretty fun. The south course does have more holes around the canal which are fun. My yardages are so much different there that even a straight forward course gives me trouble.

I've only been out there once, maybe 2004-5?  I think we played Terra Lago, but I know my friend who had a friend (see where I'm going?) who was/is a member at Bermuda Dunes.  It was still in the Bob Hope rotation then, and was a fun, old school track to play.  Always fun to play where the big boys play, and you can watch the same course on TV!

"Where'd it go?"  "Right in the Lumberyard..."

I agree!  I played both Indian Wells courses when it was the course for the Skins Game.  My professional society had golf tournaments at Indian Wells for a couple of years.  Nice, interesting courses but also expensive.
