Embrace the weather

Recommended Posts

I suppose we all hear it. Complaints about the weather... at the golf course. There are guys here in the forum/community from all across the USA. Other countries too. We all have weather don't we? (no this isn't some lame Global Warming, ehem... climate change post. LOL) I'm talking about the weather conditions when we're playing golf. I always check the weather prior to playing to see what I might be up against that day. I rarely cancel unless it's pouring rain at the time or wind is 30 mph or above.

Where I play (W.Texas) 90% of my golf; in general it's dry, sunny, and breezy to sometimes windy. Our biggest on course test weather-wise is wind. On average there are probably a 5-15 mph winds on any given day. To guys around here that's nothing - normal; and it's quite comforting on 100* summer days. However, I know many guys that don't want to play if the wind is 20 mph or more.... and gusting higher at times, etc. They stay home. Not me. I enjoy the challenge. It's a different game on those days. It's tough for sure but fun. Windy days force you to play the ball lower to the ground. Some do that better than others. Windy days also require that you actually "play" the wind. From all different directions depending on how the hole is orientated. Guys that are able to effectively play the ball lower generally score better. I also enjoy testing my skill with a low tee'd driver, bump and run shots, knock-down's, etc.

I know many of you are unable to play golf at all during winter. Forget that. I'm talking about the months when you are able to play.

So how do you guys tackle the weather where you live? What type of conditions in your area present the greatest challenge? Wind? Rain? Humidity? Heat? Cold? Do you embrace the conditions at hand or stay home? Perfect conditions rarely exist.

We have three distinct weather types.

1. Hot, humid, wet relatively little wind. I try to play late in the day after the afternoon storms go through. The bad news is that the ball doesn't go as far, the good news is it stops where it lands so you play station to station.

2. Warm, breezy and dry. You need to adjust to more bump and runs and hitting the ball lower

3. Cold breezy and dry just wear more clothes

Unless there's lighting I generally play when scheduled. I've always been that way even when I lived up North.

I enjoy playing when the wind gusts to 30-35 mph. I think it challenges you to pay attention to the elements and adjust your game likewise.

Just like today...  it's the weekend and my wife has to play because she works during the week.  Yesterday was windy, I would say 15-25 mph with slightly higher gusts.  That's stronger than normal which is usually 5-15 mph.  Today we left the house and it was raining.  It rained the entire front nine, pretty hard at times for our area.  At the turn the rain stopped then the wind started blowing 25-35 mph with higher gusts.  That made it very challenging.

I don't mind playing in the wind, but I do get tired of it day after day after day.  But here you have to learn to flight the ball down which is my normal shot anyway.  It may be why I hit the ball fairly low on most shots; I never learned to hit a high shot.  I can hit them, but I have to work at it and the results are not always what I had envisioned.  I think we have sunshine for the next 10 days; I just hope that we have a few days without a lot of wind.

When summer comes, the temperatures are usually over 100*, and like PJ says, a little breeze feels good.  Hottest I've seen it here is 113*.  Hottest I played golf is 115* in Tucson.  My wife gave up on hole number 15 at the Gallery Club near Dove Mountain.  Coldest temps that I have played golf is probably around 15* here at home.  Play six holes; head to the club to sit by the fire and have a drink; repeat 2 more times!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I like this thread Plaid.

I'll play in just about anything, when I get a chance to golf I have to take advantage of it.  If I only played when It's nice out I'd probably play about half the rounds I normally do.

Being in MN we can get any and all types of weather.  We get hot, cold, dry, wet, windy, calm, humid.  My home course is also a links course so we generally have plenty of wind.  Our club championship weekend last summer was 25-30mph with gusts 40+.  It was a brutal test of golf, but at the same time lots of fun.  You have to get creative and adjust your expectations in poor weather or you will drive yourself nuts.

I've definitely found that if you just embrace the weather and have fun you can play much better in adverse conditions

Of course I'll still take 85 sunny and a slight breeze every day :)

Here in SC we get a lot of hot humid days for most of the golf season, unless the course is closed I play when scheduled, just dress accordingly, our course can get very dry during the summer months (red clay, and Bermuda) so even though we play at roughly 6600 yards, it doesn't play that long during those months, (in the fall, winter, and spring it does play that long).

I enjoy playing in tougher conditions, especially in competition. That one element can cut the pool of potential winners in half or smaller just because of their hate of bad weather or their lack of game management in those situations. I played a tourney where it was blowing wind and raining and the winning score was 84, you just gotta acknowledge that your scoring goal has changed wether you like it or not (no pun intended) and keep pressing on. And if you don't like the weather here in central Texas just give it a few minutes and it'll change.

Also attributed to Mark Twain, but instead of Texas he referenced New England.  I think it applies most places.  I know it does here in SE Washington State.  When it rains here it doesn't usually last more than an hour or so.  The wind can go from 10-15mph to 60mph in a heartbeat, but the high winds might only last for a day.

In one of my first Pro-Ams many years ago when I was a 20 cap, we played in a wind storm that had broken tree limbs the night before.  Branches were down everywhere.  It was still very windy when we teed off.  I had a horrible slice and I knew I couldn't hit a fairway, so I teed off every hole with a 5i; played one par 5 with 5i, 5i, 5i, 9i, putt for par.  It was the only Pro-Am that I played in that I won anything; took 2nd.
