Lessons & Coaching 2016

Recommended Posts

Well boys, here are again and it's April 3, 2016 already. Today, I have my first session of the year with my instructor. So, to comment on the post I've linked to below here's where things stand so far. I haven't done much as far as diet and dieting goes but I'm maintaining my weight well. As far the stretching goes I haven't  really done jack about it. It's been hit or miss at best. I'm actually swinging pretty good though. Just not scoring. Inconsistent.

So what are you guys doing so far this year to improve your game?

It'll be interesting to see what we do today. Probably go back through some of my lessons/sessions from last year. My Pro gives me a written card each time so I'll take those with me. Below is a link to a post I made late last year.

I don't plan on taking lessons at any point. My buddy is my coach and we play together a few times a week. If he sees a problem, he'll tell me about. It almost always comes down to a set up issue.

I've been in the gym 5 days a week for the past few weeks trying to build strength and flexibility. Plan to continue with that.

I'm also planning to do more on course practice. Getting out by myself when and just practicing different shots. I think this will be the biggest benefit for me.

Lastly, I'm going to spend more time in the short game area at my club. I'd like it to be the strongest part of my game.

April 3, 2016 my oldest, Justine's 31st birthday. She's appeared in pictures with me on the forums at times as have her children, four of our seven grandkids.

At any rate I'm good about stretching every day because if I don't I can't be the legs for Justine's little sister Penny. That's a very important job that I take seriously.

Golf wise it has benefits too and I've added some daily medicine ball work although instead of a medicine ball I use a very big heavy book from my study at work. It helps my core.

I'm also continuing my lessons. My sense of what feels right is starting to match what is actually right which is leading to a lot more confidence over the ball and ultimately that translates into a lot more shots finishing flag high. My goal is to get that index below 4 by my 60th birthday in October.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

4 years ago I decided to get more golf fit.    I found a trainer in Nashua NH that is Titleist Performance Institute certified.      I went thru the initial evaluation and I was shocked at my LACK of Balance. Also other flexability issues. 2 nights a week ,1 hr group classes for 2.5 years. My handicap did go down about 2 strokes during this period. The TPI program is really really good. You can join TPI and get all their lessons and info on conditioning for golf. Pro Quarterbacks go thru this program also. We did stretching, golf flexability routines, weight training, and stretching again at the end of the hour. I also lost 12 lbs thru this course.

Completed my first session with my instructor/pro. Really enjoyed it too. I always hit the ball good when I'm with him. (of course) Two things today and one was pretty dramatic. First off overall my swing looked good to him while hitting irons. My problem with weak shots was not completing my back swing. Not enough shoulder turn. Being lazy. Turn shoulders - every shot - hit ball good. Easy as pie; right? He also encouraged me to "drive" through the shot better. Think right shoulder again. I was leading well with my hips with "decent" shaft lean. I need more work on that. Now for the dramatic part.... are you ready? Sitting down?

Tee the ball more forward with my driver. I already knew I tend to keep the ball back too far in my stance. But at least today; by merely moving the ball about 2" forward in my stance I gained about 20 yards with my driver. Not kidding. Much straighter/higher ball flight. I'd call my ball flight high either straight or with a slight draw. Loved it. Also we had the Trackman out on the range today while working with the driver. I can't expound on all the numbers but the Pro did. He explained to me what he was seeing in the numbers and what they meant. They were all pretty good too. AOA, spin, launch, smash, face angle, ball speed, etc.. I also switched to my new R15 where we were seeing the best numbers and ball flight - distance. We also discussed my tempo and timing. Today it was good. By making a good shoulder turn it will also help my tempo. So, my first session was a good one. I feel inspired. I have a couple of "easy" things to work on that will help greatly.

  • 2 weeks later...

I started counting calories and cut out the booze. In 4 months, I've lost over 40 lbs, from 223 down to 181 today. This has helped my golf swing by being more flexible at the waist and able to make my turn easier.

I did GolfTec for 3 months. I got some good out of it, but wouldn't go back or recommend it.

I bought every swing trainer i was shown: a lie tool to clip onto the clubface, an impact bag, elastic bands to slip over my forearms, a half-round cylinder to balance on, a playground ball between my forearms, a flexible staff swing trainer. None of these did much good physically, but mentally made me more aware.

Books: I reviewed the videos in Tour Tempo, read Unconscious Scoring by Dave Stockton, the Stack and Tilt Swing by Bennett and Plummer, parts of Hogan's Five Lessons. Most of the reading helped.

Videos: Watched YouTube golf instruction for various topics. Hard to find even passable quality, but did find some. Just downloaded the Golf Academy app. Found it quite useful. Highly recommend Golf Academy app.

Physical: l lift weights occasionally, but not more than once every 3-4 weeks. Stretching: l have a pilates ball i mess around doing crunches and hip thrusters. I have a broomstick in the living room i do helicopters before i play. I also have a putting strip in front of the TV which our cats think they own. In the corner are about 10 putters and 2 wedges i use with foam balls, also a point of contention with the cats.

Mental: Made a conscious, firm decision. I will be my own coach, and trust myself and my swing changes based on what works. I got royally honked off about golf instruction where they show you parts and pieces like a strip tease in order to sell you their premium package or more lessons. I never thought such instuctors really wanted me to improve. They just wanted an instruction addict who would keep coming back. Not that they were entirely unhelpful, just minimal. That mental commitment to myself has been the best help to my game.

For me this year I'm been working with my coach on getting the downswing on a better plane. That is getting the shaft to split the right forearm. When I do this right I play really well with a slight draw.

When I struggle a bit is when I get too steep on the way down and don't split the forearm and as a result a lot of pulled shots to the left ... ouch!

So far so good in 2016.
