My own 2016 Driver Shootout

Recommended Posts

What's up guys, just wanted to share some info on some testing I have been doing lately in regards to driver. Little background on myself.

Swing speed 110-115

Ball speed 160-165

Always been a relatively low spin player, 5* positive attack angle, and generally play a fairly straight ball. Driver is one of my best clubs in the bag.

I am a certified club fitter but don't actively fit people much anymore. Just too much going on in my life right now. But that does give me everything I need to fit myself which I do throughout the year. I have a GC2, and use Pingnflight software.

Here have been the contenders so far this year, just started this new campaign about 2 weeks ago.

Taylormade M1 430 8.5 Rogue 70x

Ping G LS Tec 9* Tour 65x

Callaway XR Pro Rogue 60x

So far what I have found is the M1 is a beast of a driver. It has routinely provided me the longest drives, consistent spin, and forgiveness out of any of the drivers tested to this point.

Here are my averages

M1 carry distance 276, spin 1800 launch with it set at 10.5 has been 15*, overall distance average 296

Callaway XR Pro 9* set at 10* carry distance 268, spin 2050, launch 15*, overall distance average 291

Ping G 9* carry distance 262, spin 2600, launch 15*. Overall distance average 286

The big shocker to me was the Ping G, I had very high hopes for this club, and while every once in a while I would get a 16* launch paired with a 1600 spin that produced 304 yard drives, there were just too many that spun upwards of 2800 that just killed my carry and overall numbers. The XR Pro was my gamer from last season. The M1 has been the most consistent performer so far by a long shot. My plans are to put the Callaway DBD 816 and the Nike Vapor Fly Pro against the M1 coming up in the near future. I will keep this post going as I test different clubs, or possible shaft changes. I have a Graphite Design Tour Ad BB6x, Diamana W60x, and a Possible HZDROUS 62x in route.

If anyone has a questions, let me know. I have already tested the M1 with the BB, but not enough to post numbers quite yet.

Don't leave out the Cobra offerings. I have been doing the same thing and the F6+ Pro was the winner for me. I am not a TM fan but I really wanted the M1/M2 to win because it looks badass. They were my favorite driver to look down at but I had to go with performance.

I had some time with the Vapor Fly pro yesterday, all I can say is WOW. Possibly may be the one to beat the M1. Time will tell. Need to hit it on GC2. Felt like I could swing the Nike faster, and I enjoyed the feel off the face much more than the M1.

This is an interesting shoot out! I had the m1 but recently have been playing with the R15 again. I've been interested in the Nike vapor fly pro as well swing speed is similar. Looking forward to the updates.

Yeah, I agree with others on trying the Cobra offerings. I love my King LTD so far because of its combination of low spin with lots of forgiveness. The only driver that I've hit as well is the XR16 Pro which has me intrigued since most of my bag is Callaway.

After this past Mondays round I may never give up my SLDR. I hit 13 of 14 fairways. Yes, I counted shots that were just into the second cut. At my club the second cut is about 36" wide and very playable. I used to only count shots that were truly in the fairway (first cut). If I were 3" into the second cut I wouldn't count it as a FIR. Kind of harsh. If a tee shot is outside the second cut it's a missed fairway. I'm not a Pro ya know and I think a tee shot just off the first cut is legit for an amateur. IMHO.

By the way... of those 13 FIR I'm claiming; 8 of them were in the first cut.

I am happy with my Bridgestone JGR that replaced my SLDR.  I have been keeping track of stats the past couple of weeks and over 4 rounds my FIR is 76% with my best round being 11 of 13.  My problem is that my GIR is only 47%.  I could still improve chipping and pitching, but I am averaging 31 putts.

I'm basically in the same situation as you on my game. My Vapor Fly has been super accurate for me lately but my chipping and pitching hasn't been good at all.

I just bought a callaway big Bertha alpha 815 dbd after demoing an 816 at a demo day. I asked to try it and told him how I hit and he didn't recommend it but my first swing i hit a gorgeous draw right off the center of the face. I proceeded to hit many more with that boring trajectory everyone talk about. Since I can't afford the 816 I went a step back. I also tried the king Ltd and got the same results i just didn't trust it as much after my previous experience with cobra drivers

I traded in my first gen Callaway XR for an M1, 460cc, 9.5*. Agree completely, the TM flys past the XR, but not until i moved the weight back and upped static loft 2*, which closed the face 4*. Then i fought a hook all day, in exchange for 30 more yards.

Newsflash: Read the blog by Toney Covey on increasing M1 forgiveness by moving both weights to the rear track. After 9 holes, results look great. Ball flight is slightly higher, still long, and now almost no side spin. The M1 is now a point-and-shoot howitzer!

That M1 hack from Covey was awesome! I don't have a M1 (my Vapor Fly is just a big blue bomber for me) but hearing how well those M1s perform has me super tempted.

I was an anti-TM fan, especially after my mini SLDR, but TM won me over with the solid feel of the RBS2. The M1 is so solid, especially the sweet spot. You know when you've caught it then you're gonna get 20 more yards, just by cranking up and going for it!

What's suprising to me is that the R15 has 2 weights forward, which make the R15 less forgiving-- just like the less forgiving M1 configuration for big hitters who don't need forgiveness. Yet the M1 is called a "less forgiving" driver. However, the M1 is more forgiving than the R15. The additional forgiveness comes from the M1 has an adjustable weight in the rear, which in reality makes the M1 more forgiving than the R15, at least as concerns forgiveness adjustability.

The M2 CG is even further rearwards than the farthest back M1 position, making the M2 the most forgiving.

Edited to correct the facts.

The so-called "less forgiving" M1, less than the M2, and probably the R15, has a weight in the rear, which makes the M1 more forgiving than the R15, at least externally. The R15 may have more rear weight built inside.

Take a look at the Advanced page of the CG Locations for drivers and you'll see the difference in the R15 vs the M1.

I'd like the M1 except I can't stand the look of the size of the head, 460 is too big, I don't like any 460 jead, 440 or less for me, they don't make the 430head in LH.

I'm a lefty in everything else but golf! The lack of equipment was the main reason why I never tried to play left handed.

Yes, the R15 CG is the same distance from the face as the M1-460, but higher on the center axis. However, the M1-460 CG can be adjusted further rear than the non-adjustable R15, making the M1 more forgiving than the R15. The M2 CG, tho, is even further back than the M1, making the M2 the most forgiving of the three.

No wonder the M2 is so popular right now. Less expensive than the M1 and more forgiving. Sure you don't get the adjustability but low and back CG seems to be a good fit for most.

I learned how to play golf right handed growing up, all we had around the house was RH clubs, as I got older I started aunt LH, knowing how to hit a ball RH comes in handy, I can flip over my 8 iron and hit it about 135 yards

  • 2 weeks later...

... After having the best driving year of my golf career, my Cobra Fly Z finally took me from hanging around near a zero index to a +0.3, so changing drivers was a long shot. But of course I started out 2016 with:

Taylor Made M1 Rogue Silver Tour issue 125

Cobra LTD stock Rogue Black 95

Cobra F6 Rogue Black Tour issue 110

Cobra Fly Z Rogue Black 95

... I wasn't a bg fan of the M1 two tone top and that usually means trouble somewhere down the line. But I loved the SLDR so gave it a shot. The Rogue Silver 125 is too much shaft for me and I felt like I had to really step on it to get my desired trajectory and never felt like I unloaded it fully, taking full advantage of the shaft properties. So I tried a few other shafts including a Kai'li and a Kuro Kage Black, both producing a better trajectory and feel for my swing. 100-103 swing speed and a smooth transition. Not a huge fan of the sound and feel either, although they weren't distracting. I just never hit it as straight as my Fly Z and my trajectory was inconsistent. I played about 10 rounds with it and really wanted to like it but it was pretty clear it wasn't better than my Fly Z.

... Although I loved the look, feel and sound of the King LTD, results were similar to the M1. Trajectory wasn't as much of a problem once I set it at 10.5* but again I just didn't hit it as straight as the Fly Z and about 1 out of 10 were much lower than my normal trajectory. I hit some bombs with the LTD and the M1 but also had my shortest drives with each and my most wayward with the M1. I could make the argument that pushes and pulls along with contact not as centered as I would like is more a swing issue than a head issue... but in the end does that matter? Bottom line is you hit it well or you don't.

... The Cobra F6 really is an updated version of the Fly Z so I had high hopes and was not disappointed. While I didn't hit it any straighter than my Fly Z, I gained a few yards. Many of those holes were I had my longest drives were replaced with ever so slightly longer drives. Nothing eye popping and usually just a few yards. All in all probably not enough difference to make the change from the Fly Z to the F6 but the additional front weight position allows me to play in Chicago's strongest winds with a slightly lower trajectory and a little less spin. And after being a shaft ho my entire golfing life, the Rogue Black 110 Tour issue shaft fits me so well I haven't picked around with any others. Kinda like a forged mb blade hit dead center, the 110 feels like nothing as it must be loading and unloading perfectly for my swing. So for me at least the F6 works better than the LTD and considerably better than the M1.

I have been struggling off the tee more with elbow pain than the driver, but it is now in my head and I am searching.

Between Saturday and Sunday I hit the drivers below.  I own the first five combos and the rest were at demo days at my club.

Titleist 915 D3, Diamana D+70 (current gamer)

Adams XTD 9*, Red Tie x

Callaway 815 Alpha, AD DI 7x and Fubuki ZT 60x

Callaway Optiforce 440, AD DI 7x and Fubuki ZT 60x

TM R1, Matrix Red Tie x

Callaway Big Bertha DBD, Rouge 60x - Not for me right now, just too unforgiving for my game.

Callaway Great Big Bertha, Diamana D+ 70x and Fuji Speeder - Maybe with a different shaft it would fit.  Loved the look and feel.

Callaway XR16, Project X 6.5 - Just not for me.

Callaway XR16 Pro, Diamana D+70x and AD DI 7x - Absolute bomber with the AD DI and still a consideration for the future

Nike Vapor Flex 440, Diamana D+ 70x - Did not fit me at all.  Hated the sound and feel.

Nike Vapor Fly, Tensei 60x - Not for me either, maybe with a different shaft.

Nike Vapor Fly Pro, Tensei 60x - if only I could get used to the color.

TaylorMade M2, Kuro Kage x - Could not get two solid strikes in a row so need to hit it again when I am not worn out.

TaylorMade M1, Fuji Speeder - See above

TaylorMade M1 430, Kuro Kage x - This was a winner for me, but not $500 better than the D3

Nothing that I hit was better than my Titleist when struck well and on the advice of my Asst. Pro I just decided to go with a more forgiving shaft so we are giving a tour issue Matrix White Tie 60x a go.  First round with it will be on Friday.
