Wilson C200

Wilson golf and My Golf Spy teamed up recently to provide a great opportunity for forum members: Demo the new Wilson C200 iron, post a pic on the mobile app and one lucky person would be selected to win a entire set of Wilson clubs while two others would receive a set of C200's custom fit to their specs.

I'm one of the fortunate three! Even though I wasn't selected as the grand prize winner I most certainly feel as if I were. Thank you so much to Wilson for supplying the generous prizes and MGS for choosing me as one of the winners.

While this prize isn't for testing in the traditional sense I'm opening a thread to provide feedback on the irons so that others might consider Wilson in general or particularly the C200 as a viable option for their gamer irons. The format that I will follow will be simple enough. I'll start by telling you a bit about my game and then about how these clubs fit my game or don't if that turns out to be the case.

About me: I'm a very busy 59 year old in reasonably good health and physical condition for my age. Like many in their late 50's I've lost some flexibility so my swing has slowed down. My club head speed with the driver hovers either side of 90 mph. I hit my 7 iron 140-150 at Sea Level. My ball flight with the driver is medium to low draw and with irons medium to high draw. I've used a variety of R flex graphite shafts in my irons for the past six years. I should add that when I have time to practice I'm very consistent and Instill carry a 5.1 handicap index.

My current irons are the Wilson C100's with Matrix Studio 6.1 shafts. My teacher and I selected them because they provide some help in launching the ball higher while still providing some feedback on misses and the ability to work the ball a bit. I've had some very nice rounds with them including a competitive 69. They are pictured above side by side with my new C200's. I was professionally fit for them and Wilson essentially replicated that fitting for my new irons.

A bit about the C200 irons. Like many OEMs Wilson offers three basic types of irons, Super Game Improvement, Game Improvement and Players. They are labeled D (Distance), C (Control), F (Feel). There are two iron types in their Player's iron category. According to Wilson I'm the classic C player. An older, better player who still wants the ability to control his ball flight but needs some additional distance. Others who might fight the C category are guys who are on the rise from a mid high cap to middle or even higher single digit status.

New in the C200 is the flex face technology where only 24% of the face is attached allow for maximum flex of the face on contact. According to Wilson this along with power holes filled with urethane serve to enhance the feel and increase the ball speed in what is a forged GI iron.

I received my new irons early last week, had a range session and have played a round with them. I'm on vacation this week so I'll have lots of opportunities to hit them including rounds on Tues., Weds. and Thurs. Early results are intriguing. 6 iron 20 feet left and pin high from 168 on 1 and then past pin high and 10 feet right from 152 on a hole in the opposite direction later in the round. 8 iron to 3 feet from 132 into the wind, nearl hole high from 143 down wind. 5 iron that went 178 on a cross breeze lay up. They are easy to hit, have a great click, nice turf interaction and different feel than my C100's.

Look for a complete review including some pictures of those Urethane filled holes later in the week. I may even try a video as we recorded the stuffed 8 iron. There you'll get to see the famous Rev Kev loop. Think Ryan Moore or Brittany Lincecome without the length. :). Please feel free to ask questions or make comments. Wilson deserves some love from the MGS community and should be taken seriously again. They are back in the game!

I did the free demo set of three from Wilson, and I agree: they are SUPER easy to hit!  The shafts in the demo threesome weren't right for me and my ball flight, especially with the 4 iron was rubbish, but I liked the clubs and would love to play with a properly fitted set.

This is awesome and I'm glad Wilson will be getting some love here. When I got my new FG Tour F5's in, I compared the 7 irons of my "old" Tour 100's, the new F5's, and the C200's. I was pleased with the improvement and consistency with switching to the F5's. I was blown away with how well the C200's performed. On average, I gained 3 mph of ball speed switching to the F5's and the C200's were 4 mph more than the F5's! They were crazy hot off the face and had a nice high ball flight. If people are looking for some distance with forgiveness, the C200's need to be thrown into the mix of irons to demo. They flat out perform.

What shaft did you demo? I have the new aldila rogue R75's in mine. They are about 15 grams heavier than what I've been gaming. These irons look and feel very different from the C100's. One huge thing that I've noticed is that I've gotten away with a couple of slightly fat hits. That normally does not happen on Bermuda grasses. I'm very excited about that. Looking forward to today's range session and then actual play the next three days. The weather is perfect for golf. Née only have so many days left before it gets hot.

A bit later than promised I wanted to complete my brief review of the Wilson C200 iron. Part of the reason for the delay was intentional in that I wanted to give the irons a fair shot and I was looking for a window in between regular MGS iron reviews.

In this review I'm comparing the Wilson C200 to my current signature gamer the C100.

First some comments on the C100. Mine were custom fit by my teacher. The Matrix Studio 6.1 was a very nice option for me as it enabled me to kick the ball up a bit higher. It was actually offered on the D100 but Wilson provided it for me free of up charge.

The club delivered as promised. It was very easy to hit and the slightly stronger lofts provided the extra punch that I was lacking with my irons. My stock distance at sea level with PW jumped from 105 to 117, a full club. It took a while but after a time I found that I could control the trajectory just fine. My normal shot is a slight draw and that trend has continued with these. At times the draw gets to be a bit more than I would like with and iron. I can also hit a nice little fade with the mid irons.

The down side of the iron has always been the look and also a feel that is a bit harsh. There are lots of different finishes on these clubs and frankly from the numbering to the black anti glare finish, everything looks cheap. I've tolerated the look because the clubs performed but I have had a wandering eye towards other distance type GIs since these have been in my bag.

Also as time has gone on I've wished that I had opted for the slightly heavier graphite aldila shaft option to improve my feel of the clubhead through the shot.

That brings us to the C200's. Ascetically it's clear that Wilson heard my complaints about the C100's loud and clear even if I was not the one who voiced them. These look like the top quality golf club that they are. Even the rogue aldila shaft has the appearance of steal so that at a glance they look like a better players club. Both my pro and scratch parishioner love the look of this club and they hit it great first swing when they gave it a try.

Of course these aren't a players iron and so someone who has the chops to play them and prefers that category will find the top line and sole too thick, the offset a lot to deal with and the overall appearance a bit clumsy. I think that there are fewer of those players than most people think but that's not the topic of this thread.

Aesthetics aside there are also some real technology changes that create differences in performance when compared to the C200.

First and foremost are the urethane fills and flex face. While I would not go so far as to compare the feel at impact to a forged blade there is a much more defined feel at impact. When you get it on the sweet spot the ball seems to stay on the face forever until jumping off on a beautiful trajectory towards the intended target. There is a very nice click on solid shots also. I haven't gained as much yardage as some others have reported but I've gained a little about 4 yards per iron.

What I have gained is distance and trajectory control. I'm not sure if I owe that to the slightly heavier shaft, lessons or face technology but I have great distance and trajectory control with the C200's. I'm confident that if I'm hitting 9 iron from 127 it's going between 125-129 unless there is a significant mishit and that's huge on my golf course.

I'd love to tell you that I hit the 4 iron like a champ but that would be a lie. The clubs aren't Magic and even though my swing has gotten a tad bit steeper over the past couple of months I still have a shallow swing that approaches the ball from the inside. I'm better off with hybrids and fairway woods for those longer shots from 175-210.

what has happened is that the little additional weight and cleaner look have helped me implement the moves that my teacher wants and I'm now getting a very nice little divot going straight towards the target with every one of my irons, even the 5 and 6. That wasn't the case ever with the C100's.

If I hadn't of been selected as a winner of this set I certainly would have considered purchasing the C200's and based on the value of the other irons in this category I'd say that there would be an 80 percent chance that I would have purchased these.

Oh yeah, my handicap index has dropped from 5.7 to 4.9. They are staying in my bag for the next couple of years at least.

Thanks again Wilson and MGS for selecting me as a prize winner!

Great work Rev - love that they're working out for you. Telling as well that they are performing as well or better than those professionally fitted to you - that they're in the same family helps I'm sure, but great to see some positives coming in such a short space of time... gotta love that.

Be blessed brother

Great to hear from you. Here's hoping for more time to play. Even though the new ones weren't fit per se I simply ordered my current specs. :)

Rev: glad to hear you are sooooo happy with these, and that your game is also improving .. nice!!

Thx for review and commentary .. I'd come very very close to purchasing these...

Mentioned elsewhere I'd demo'ed like a dozen different clubs, then got a 3-club tester set from Wilson (you rent for two weeks for $9.95 and then ship 'em back w/pre-paid return label) and then went back to the store for a quick "re-test / confirm" vs two other contenders - JPX-EZ Forged and XR (regular not OS) - when the helpful store rep handed me one of the new Cobra King F6...

So I guess once you find your proper category - I'm also in the GI but tending toward better "crossover" category (and def not in the SGI and not .. yet ;-) ?? .. a "playah") - you really should keep shopping/testing until one separates itself from the others and 'feels right'.

I bought a set of Wilson C200 about 2 months ago. Played with them about 8-10 times. Probably my swing, but have not been hitting these irons very good. I am about a 10-12 handicap have not broke 80 on my home course with these clubs. I’m 63 years old, and swing speed has diminished. For guys in my age bracket, what’s in your bag?
