Tiger Woods registered for 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont

While his camp claims he still has no timetable for return, Tiger Woods has taken the necessary steps to enter the 2016 U.S. Open field.

Though agent Mark Steinberg denied reports that the 14-time major winner is definitely playing in the Wells Fargo Championship in early May, Woods has registered to compete in this year's U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, Golfweek reports. Woods filed on April 4 for the tournament, which runs June 16-19.

In recent weeks, speculation has ramped up regarding Woods return. Tim Rosaforte mentioned the possibility of Tiger playing at Quail Hollow on May 5-8; another tournament that makes sense is the Memorial, which Woods has won five times.

Woods hasn't played on tour since the Wyndham Championship in August. The last time the U.S. Open was held at Oakmont in 2007, Woods finished one stroke behind Angel Cabrera for the title.

I'd love it if he played in the FedEx St Jude tournament in June, but that is very unlikely. Oakmont isn't the course I'd pick to start my return to golf lol

Either way I'll be pulling for him to play well.

Yes surprised based on the past coverage of his current state of recovery.  But not surprised in the sense that we aren't getting a lot of updates from the Woods camp.  I had a feeling he would just show up without a lot of fanfare and early announcement to his first event back.

I'm mostly just hoping he is able to play pain free and not cause further injury.  I really want him to play well and compete on Sundays.  I don't want to remember him as the guy who came back, couldn't compete and hung on too long.  I want to remember him as the dominant force that changed the way we look at the game.

Bottom line for me though is that golf is more fun to watch when Tiger is in contention.  I really hope he can get back to that level.

I admit I'm happy, because of him I started playing 20 years ago. I always thought it was an old person sport. He changed my mind. I'm still a Lefty fan, but it was him that started it out for me.

I hope he does play. There are rumors he rented a place to stay for the Memorial so it seems he will be playing there wether it is his first or second tournament we will have to see. A heathy Tiger in good form is great for the game.

No I'm not surprised. Better to register if you think there is any chance of competing. So obviously he's thinking about it.

Yes, I'd like to see Tiger get back out there. Especially now that the golf world has positioned Spieth, Mcllory, Fowler, Day as the new Big 3 or 4. Who wouldn't like to see Tiger matched up against one of these guys on Sunday.

Realistically, I wouldn't expect much at least initially from Tiger. He hasn't played any competition for a while. I'm pretty sure Tiger would even concede that. We'll see.

Beware the wounded golfer!

There is a chance, although slim, that because of his injury he may be swinging a little smoother and not pushing it.  If he does that, he has the talent to compete, but his short game will be the key.
