Quick Take: KivaSun's Bison Jerky

Snacks Matter

I don't know about you, but I need to have snacks in my bag when I play. Typically, I'm a two-nosh guy. I go to the bag once around the 7th, and again around the 13th. Must be the times when my blood sugar drops, or when I just need something actually pleasurable to happen in my round. Ah the healing power of food.

Anyway, a new potential golf bag snack came across my desk recently that I want to take a moment to share with you, KivaSun's Bison Jerky.

Jerky can often be found in my bag, but I want to talk about this one in particular because, well, it's made from bison. For this California kid, bison is not a usual item on the menu. In the sense of full disclosure, I may have a compulsion to eat exotic meats. Glad I got that off my chest.

So the jerky is delicious, hence sharing it with you, but it's also actually pretty healthy and has a great company story as well. There is even a golf tie-in!

Added bonus, it won't melt in your bag like that snickers bar did yesterday. OK so I'm not always health conscious...

Tasty and Healthy

I'm not going to quantify taste, that's too subjective, but I did find the jerky tasty. More objectively, the jerky was moist and chewy, non-powdery (aka not disintegrating in the bag), and very flavorful.

The original style has a touch of heat/spice actually, not much, but true wimp-mouths (my wife's term for her spice intolerance) should know it's there. The hatch chile flavor warms to a slow burn over time, and is quite pleasant for one who likes spicy stuff (aka not the wife).

On the healthy side, the ingredients are all real foodstuffs, and there is not a sulfate or monosodium anything is sight. Even the sodium level is quite reasonable for a jerky.

No hormones or antibiotics in the animal rearing as well. Obviously it's a good source of protein on the course, without the carbs that can boost energy initially, but also lead to crashing later. At least based upon my experiences...

Good Company Mojo

I always like to support ethical and responsible companies. One of the things that comes up a couple of times on the KivaSun website is the fact that it is a Native American owned company, and that they honor their bison, treating them with respect and care.

Granted, they will also kill them and eat them, but that's the reality of any meat-based food industry. Respect and responsibility are not always the case though. Just Google meat processing a bit and you will be on your way to veganism.

There is a nice golf tie in with KivaSun too. The founder is Notah Begay III, who racked up four wins on the PGA tour and has also been in the broadcast booth for NBC. More importantly, Notah's presence also ties the company into his NB3 foundation that works to address Type 2 diabetes in the Native American youth.

If you eat the jerky, you are adding a bit of coin to diabetes research. That's a feel good bonus for eating a tasty snack.

Where To Buy?

You can find the jerky online at the KivaSun site HERE and also in person at some Costco locations across the country HERE. Come on NorCal Costcos, I need a bunch of this to take to Bandon Dunes at the end of the month...

It runs $8.99 a bag online, which puts is right in the premium jerky ballpark.

Gonna pick this up for the summer rounds. I've been working on better eating habits but I usually don't get during a round and it always bites me in the butt at the end of the day.
