Stack and tilt

Recommended Posts

So, I have been working towards getting back into a bit more strict S&T swing. I'd had some previous success with this swing(best center contact and repeatable ballflight), but also got a game ruining case of repeatable shanks while trying it(3-4 years ago).

The two most difficult changes trying to go back have been the flat left wrist at impact, instead of my patented delayed flip maneuver. Then getting rid of my horrible over the top move at the top of my backswing.

Here are a couple swing videos I took:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdVM-TdnS34

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g6mYBZvzPc

The things I have noticed while working on a flatter left wrist impact are a more consistent feeling throughout the bag. I don't have to make as many alterations for hitting the longer clubs. I might finally be getting some speed back in my driver(hopefully).

I took it out to the course with the latest piece(flat left wrist) for the first time on Monday and played ok. Shot an 88 and made two errant lost ball swings. I did hit 8 or 9 GIR overall, and made 3 birdies on the front 9, which is a new high for me.

What about you guys? Anyone else using or tried S&T?

I think that I would not mess with something like this unless I had a teacher teaching it to me.  I think that most modern teacher have an element of stack and tilt in their instruction but do yourself a favor and get a trained eye on what you're trying to do.

Good luck!

Nice Wilson golf glove in the video! I'd honestly go see Bryan Skavnak out of Parkers Lake. He works miracles. Not that expensive either!

What stood out for me was your divot pattern, you gotta make lines, not a huge hole!

Haha, I knew someone would comment on that. I my defense, I had just started hitting there(that crater existed before me)

Yeah, I have taken some lessons from a Stack and Tilt guy over the winter. It has just been a longer more difficult road back than I imagined.

A bit better 2nd outing. Got out last night for 18 and shot an 83 at a decent course(2nd best round so far this year). I hit 9 GIR, but didn't drive the ball particularly well.

What's your handicap? 9 GIRs would indicate a lower single digit handicap and also fewer driving problems than may my think unless the other 9 holes include penalties or drives that are well out of position.

I'm at a 4.9 right now and I'm averaging between 8-9 GIRs. That's right on normal for my handicap.

Last year my handicap finished the year at 12, but I haven't been posting any of my rounds this year. I do tend to have 1 wild drive per round which ends up getting lost. I was looking at the average stats for GIR per handicap and it seems like I somehow never manage to capitalize on it since I haven't ever shot a round in the 70s. I certainly wasn't hitting this many GIR last year, so I bring it up as a one area which seems to be improving since switching back to S&T.

I somehow still manage to put 1 or 2 triple bogeys per round out there which hurts(not in the last round thankfully).

Rev--never underestimate the ability of a mid handicapper to screw up his score.  Yesterday, 6/9 GIRS in regulation (including the par 5 I was on in two) on the front nine and still shot 45.

Glad you brought this topic up! Been having my hips sway and remembered one of the benefits of this swing theory, for lack of a better word. Doing much better now.

Did you decide if you would go to an instructor who might get you squared up?

Yeah, I've noticed that using a swing style which doesn't move off the ball(right for a righty) on the backswing, definitely improves my contact. Certainly there are some difficulties with the swing as well, I've struggled sliding my hips far enough left on the downswing. but overall it feels like an improvement so far.

I've been working with a Stack and Tilt instructor in my area, which has be quite helpful(even if I get stubborn sometimes)

Yeah I can see getting left being a struggle. Hit a couple of fat shots today because of this. Overall pretty happy with the results. Just saw my hcp creep below 10 again!

Well the pro I started working with at the beginning of the month incorportates some of the principles. I briefly worked with him last season and got as low as a 6.7- and I'm trying to get back there again, but the holidays and work increase kept me away. I do like that it has given me more of a routine before shots and some good checkpoints before swings.
