1 Iron Hunt

Like the title says, I'm looking for a 1 iron to put in my bag in place of my 3 wood. My 3 wood goes between 250-260 and a 1 iron would go between 230-40. I don't want a hybrid because I tend to struggle with them a bit, but I can pure my irons. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Depends on what you want really, driving iron, fairway use or overall utility. I am currently undergoing the same hunt.

 

With the mizuno mp h5 it's got a bigger sole that will help with height and is more forgiving than say a titleist 714u. The srixon zu45 has a hearty sole too, that seems smaller than the mp h5 but looks like a blade and I say looks because it's beefier. All of these are hollow construction and come with steel shaft, though you can go graphite. I've only tried the 714u in store and think there's a new edition too. It'll be the easiest to find and try in store.

I don't think that they make the TMB Titleist in a 1 iron unfortunately. I actually carry the TMB 3 iron in my set.

You are correct. you can take a 2 iron and bend it 2* strong. On the other hand how much distance would you gain/ lose between 16-18*?

Not sure how well it will bend given its hollow style head. I'm guessing it will be probably a 5-8 yard difference for me.

It will bend just fine even if its hollow. Its only 2 degrees. You will lose 2 degrees of bounce though.

 

 

As for your original question, I went MPH5 1i bc their stock shaft selections were so solid. Plus I'm a cheap ass and the tmag udi was more expensive at the time. I don't have anything negative to say about the club. It actually had better feel than the udi despite the larger top line. Its not always in my bag but it's useful when the course asks for it.

 

Btw I've tried most all "driving" irons. Titleist, ping, Mizuno, TEE, Tmag and others I'm not currently thinking of. I'm happy with my Hitogami.

The TM RSi UDI is not a bad club IMO - as 1 irons go though, the old faithful Ping Eye2 can be had for around $10. I can still think of a few pros who carry one now and then, but a few years back they were absolutely de rigeur on tour. A bit of retro chic perhaps.

Did you ever try up against the Titleist 716 t-mb? i was looking and apparently its 17* so just one off the mizuno

I tried the TMB 3i with an X100 and a TMB 2i with a s400 and liked both of them. Not enough to buy one when I already have my mph5 1i.

I played an mp 30 2 iron a few years ago. Thats until I figured out I could find something more forgiving haha

A million years ago, when I played, I carried MP14's 1-PW. When I hit that 1 and 2, they were SWEET!!!!  Otherwise, ugh.

That is why I went from the butterknife to a Cleveland VAS 1 iron.  Ugly as can be, but was great off the tee.

It was a beast off the tee.  Carried a driver and then 1 iron to lob wedge.  1 iron was originally a Ping Eye2 then the VAS, rest of the clubs were Eye2s.

That is basically what I do even though I have several 1 irons. I carry my VIP 2 iron which I have kicked back to 17* I did have it kicked back to 16* but unless I hit it off a tee it would dig some because it is a butter knife any how.  An to be truthful there is not much distance change between 16 and 18. You can always find used 1 or 2 irons on E-bay and a lot of times in the used section at golf stores

It's either the Tournament Blade or the MB-001 that goes all the way to a 1 iron. If someone wanted it I could get it.

That'd be a true 1 iron challange. Picked up a beat up old McGregor 1 iron blade at good will. I'll see what the damage is next range session
