Concentrating...

StrokerAce

Recommended Posts

So I don't have a 'normal' group of guys that I play with and usually play as a single somewhere.  Inevitably I get paired up with all sorts of players.  Some old, young, good, bad...

Recently I played with 3 guys that weren't very good.  I'm not great (13 hcp) but these guys were 95+ golfers.

I was able to keep my focus and shot an 82, but my question is how do you guys keep your focus when the people you're playing with aren't very good?  Does it frustrate you?  Do you have tricks/tips/techniques you use to maintain your concentration?

There were some holes where they hadn't reach my tee shot until their 3rd shot!  I wonder if I would've been able to go lower had they been about my same skill level...

Ideas?

I don't mind playing with most anyone. However, I once walked off after 4 holes. I was paired once with these two goof-balls that had no business what so ever on a golf course. I realized this about halfway down the first fairway. It wasn't that they were rude or obnoxious or anything. They were absolute first timers and completely ignorant of the game. And they told me so. They should have saved themselves some money and gone to a vacant lot somewhere.

Wow... did you report them at the clubhouse?  Were they even trying?

Hard to think of something that would force me to walk off.  Did you consider just letting them play on and joining up with one of the next groups behind you?

This happens to my wife and I all the time, depending on what time of the day we play.  My wife is a 17 HCP and we like to play at a steady pace; not fast, but not slow either.  Later in the day when the twilight rate starts, it seems like the beginners come out to save money.  I retired last year so I can play anytime, but my wife is still working so during the week we play when she closes her business.  Several times this year we have been paired with twosome and one of them says when we introduce ourselves that it's their first time on a golf course.  Newbies shouldn't be on a course until they can make contact with a ball.  After the first hole we politely say that the hole ahead is open and we will play ahead of them; they are usually glad to see us go.  Usually, earlier in the day we get paired with better players.

I don't mind playing with people that shoot in 90's or 100's as long as they move along.  We played with two guys in Palm Springs that were terrible and we got more than a hole behind, so the marshal comes over to my wife and I and told us to pick up the pace.  They automatically assume that the female is the problem.  So my wife told him to watch us play for one hole, and then he went to talk to the other two guys!  It's hard to concentrate when the other guys are spraying the ball all over the course.  One thing I never do is help someone look for a ball, unless I saw it and know exactly where it is.  Looking for someone else's ball takes me out of my game, and invariably it results in a bad hole for me.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I play all the time with people that are mid to high handicap players and have no issues.  I just focus on playing my shots and couldn't care less what the others in my group are doing.

Just find your happy place and enjoy the day. Unless your playing for cash or in a tournament. Then relax and enjoy being on the course. Who knows, you might even be able to help the new guys with tips or etiquette questions that'll help them play quicker or dare I say it, but play better as well lol.

Thankfully I was able to find some good shots they hit and complement them on those.  I think they appreciated it and felt like they were holding me up.

I hate to give advice to people because what may work for me might not work at all for them.... and the last place you want to try a swing change is on the course!

Anyhow... I enjoyed the walk and being on the course!

My tip, focus on your shot and what you are doing.  Yes help look for balls, but when its your turn or your away from them think about your game.  I have a very short pre shot routine, but I go thru it every time.  And I think that is the key, keep it the same once its your turn to play, and have fun you never know who you might play with.

I don't mind playing with most any handicap as long as they move along.  I get more frustrated these days with the players who believe that music is the most important thing on the course.. I feel if you want to listen to music you can, just keep it to yourself.

I can agree with the music, but find a good song or two and they can help with your rhythm.

I play single a bit too. While I'm super happy if I find a good player, I don't think scores matter as much as pace. That being said, when I do come across the slow, oblivious, or just plain bad golfer, In ry to remind myself that I paid $60 to be here, I might as well take in the sunlight, and listen to the birds chirp (literally). It puts me in a better mood so when my turn finally comes, I am relaxed instead of tense. Not saying it works all the time, but the theory is sound....😀

For me it depends on the type of round it is, competitive, recreational etc. If it's competitive then I try to distance myself a bit mentally especially if they start losing composure, that doesn't mean you can't be polite and cordial but I don't necessarily go out of my way to start a conversation when there's a wait. If it's a round just for fun then I will try to "turn off" in between shots and just enjoy being outside on the course and engage with the people I'm playing with, sometimes the best company I've had on the course couldn't break 100. The best thing for me was figuring out the limits to my concentration, it's hard for me to hold a high level for very long so I try not to focus really hard between shots, I'll give myself 30 seconds of hard focus to execute each shot pre shot and all then outside of that I try to relax it also helps to keep mechanical thoughts from popping into my head. Hope some of that helps, message me if you have any questions.

Which is OK as long as it is a practice round and not a round where the score is posted. Rule 14-3

I will simply focus on my game. Just try to focus on the next shot when they are hitting. If they are super slow, I may ask to play through. I grew up playing on an executive course with some truly horrid golfers (I was one of them). College golf taught me to avoid distractions. The big thing is it's your score. Help if they ask, but play your game. Be ready for your shots. On the plus side, it's more time to think things through.
