Fairway wood from the rough

Recommended Posts

I have this constant mental battle within myself.

Picture this -

par 5 - 475; mediocre drive of 240 that ends in rough leaving an approximately 230 yard (clear) shot to the green.

do you bring out your 3 wood and go for it from the rough or lay up with a hybrid/iron.

I have this bad habit of trying to 'go for it' with my 3 wood even though the ball is in the rough (not buried).  My success rate is about 50/50 so I'm trying to figure out how to increase that success rate.

What is the best technique/method you use when hitting out of the rough with your fairway wood?

Swing Easy, Hit Hard.....that was the mantra of Julios Boros, 3 time major champion & 18 time PGA winner.

He made his living playing difficult courses.  He wrote a book titled, "Swing Easy, Hit Hard"

Boros suffered a fatal heart attack in 1994 on the golf course at the Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was found sitting in a golf cart under a willow tree by two club members near the 16th hole, his favorite spot on the course.

Clear shot with no trouble I got for it all day long.  However I don't carry any fairway woods, just 4 hybrids so they get through the rough pretty decent.

Personally I choke down just a little bit, take a shorter backswing and then swing hard through the ball.

Unfortunately I usually swing too hard - thinking "it's in the rough, I've really got to go after it" and end up with a pull hook.

Thanks for the tips guys!  I'll try it out.

If it's me, it depends on the lie. If the ball is sitting up a little, the shot can actually be easier than a fairway wood from the fairway. I would go for it in this case, assuming there's not a lot of trouble around the green. If there is, or the lie is tough, I lay up.

From the rough that far away I would likely try to make birdie after laying up. Clear shot to the green only works if you hit it straight, there are too many problems with going for it from the rough. Hit a7 iron and then wedge close to have a legit with shot at birdie.

Not to mention, if the mediocre drive is only measuring 240... what are the chances you'll hit a 230 FW wood? Muscling 230 out of the rough would probably leave you short anyways with all the risk involved.

Unless I have it teed up in the rough, I would probably lay it up comfortably with an iron.

... well, looks like the consensus is to layup and play for either a 1 putt birdie or 2 putt par.  Thanks for the feedback!

I think the most important "club" in my bag is the one between my ears.. that I need to "swing" right more often!!

I think there is more to it than that.  Is there trouble around the green?  If you miss hit are you going to still have a shot at the green?

Most average golfers are going to have a better shot at getting closer to the pin from an average lie in the rough 30 yards from the green as opposed to 100 yards out in the fairway.  It really depends what's around the green and how bad the 'miss' is when you miss it.

If your 50/50 average is hitting the green or missing the green and being somewhere around it and not in trouble from 230 I'm probably going for it every time.  If that 50/50 is being around the green or being in a hazard or behind a tree then I'm laying up.

I usually say go for it. My reasoning is If i top it then it is like laying up. If I connect pure I am getting pretty close to the green if not on. They also stats say the closer you are to the green the better your chance of knocking it close is

Lay up to a good wedge distance to at least in sure I keep par in play.

I read the book Every shot counts. The book suggests that you get as close as you can. But there's a problem with that philosophy and my dad's example A. He tends to flub his woods a good bunch. It's 50/50 whether it's a 10 yard dribbler or solid contact. That doesn't include snap hooks or slices. The question is what would help you more, or how much confidence you have in a 3 wood. Considering my game, i don't hit enough good solid 3 woods to justify hitting a 3 wood right now. My dad I'd rather see him hit 6 or 7 iron and leave himself a short mid iron. As for yourself, out of the rough look at the lie. if it's down I'd rather hit iron or hybrid and move it forward. IF it's up, I'm going for it. Swing easy and finish the swing. Don't force the hit or get lazy on it.

Great advice. I'll have to check out that book. Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

It seems to me that there are two questions here.

1.  230 is out of range for me on the courses that I play in the place that I play so it's a non factor.  Let's make it 210 my max three wood distance.  If it's truly clear in front of me and I know that the ball will chase I will play the ball back in my stance a bit and actually hit 5 wood rather than 3 and open the face a hair.  If I flush it the ball will take off low and a bit right but will draw and chase.  If I miss it (chances of a top are extremely low) it will be high on the face and end up 40 yards short of the green - since the green is already open that's not a bad spot - the other likely "bad" miss is the over draw or block but again if the green is open this will likely be close to pin high and be simple enough up and downs.

BTW if you are saying it's 50/50 to get the ball on the green from 230 out of the rough (I don't think you are but if) then you are ready for the tour.

2.  The second question is technique - I play it back a bit, take one less club (it's coming out hot) and try to get a tad more upright so as to avoid too much grass between the clubface and the ball.  Shots like this you have to discern your lie - sometimes a 4 hybrid is even the proper play and it will go nearly as far as the 3 wood depending up course conditions.  Try it sometime when the course is empty - take 3 balls and hit 3 wood, 5 wood, hybrid from the same spot - you may be surprised at the result.

Proximity to the hole is all I care about. The rough here isn't too bad. Guess ss might have something to do with it too. Yesterday the longest par 5 at my club was playing at 605 so for me, driver plus 3 wood is about 560-580, and you bet I hit both. My course doesnt have a lot of 3 woods needed so it's not in the bag at the moment.

I don't have a slow tempo so I hitting something "nice and easy" turns in to jerky and cumbersome
