M1 help

revkev

Recommended Posts

Gents I'm going to head to the Sports Authority later today to buy a bag. (If I find one that suits me)

If they still happened to have any M1's left and they are significantly marked down I would love to pick one up. (I'd put my Paderson shaft in so flex doesn't matter).

What's the deal on loft with these? I was fit for a 9 degree turned up 1 in the R 11s and a 12 degree down 1 in the SLDR. My Ping G30 is a 10.5 and it launches perfect for me (15-16 nearly every time).

Is there someone out there that can help me on how these bad boys run?

Thanks

Not sure I can help much here. I have a 9.5 with both weights in the back and have no problem launching it. FWIW, my Ping drivers were always 10.5.

Just remember that adjusting the loft will affect the face angle. If you get a 10.5 and lower it to 9.75, face will be open 2°. Down to 9, 3° open. Down to 8.5, 4° open.

Same going the other way. If you get a 9.5 and increase to 10.25, 2° closed. Up to 11, 3° closed. Up to 11.5, 4° closed.

I guess it would depend on your desired shot shape as well as what you feel comfortable looking at. I personally hate looking at closed faces and much prefer them to be square or open.

In your neck of the woods you might adjust the driver depending on conditions to get more carry so I guess it might be a consideration.

That is helpful and yes I know about the adjustments relative to face angle. It used to bother me but it hasn't for some time. I've learned that if I hit it well I will get used to how it looks, sounds and feels and in short order that will seem normal. I hated the way my Wilson C100's looked and played solid golf with them for 2 seasons. I once had a MIZUNO driver that looked like a pancake, had a closed face and sounded like the gates of hell shutting at Impact but I coukd carry it nearly 240 (down here).

I'd like to have of couple of others weigh in on this one. It may be mute in that one won't be available. But just in case. I have some mad money again. :)

No help here, but tell us how it goes. I've only hit the M1and M2 in a sim, but I loved the feel. But for the sake of at least saying something, I'd say start at 10°. Sounds like that's your sweet spot.

There is no spoon.

... Back in the day more informed players used to hit a demo, have the loft measured and try to find a head on the rack that matched it. Those that weren't as informed were told when you hit a demo well, try and purchase the demo. Problem was the demo 9.5* head measured at 10.2* and the one you bought off the rack was 11.9* and wondered why it launched higher with more spin.

... Thankfully adjustable hosel's have rendered that problem obsolete. You will most certaintly adjust your hosel to a different loft than the demo or from your previous driver. In the end all that matters is tuning the head to give you the trajectory you want.

I remember those days well. In fact my two favorite metal headed drivers were ones that I demo'd and got to purchase the very one that I demo'd. In fact they let me take my Titleist on the course for a round prior to purchase so I could actually see that it was longer and as acurate as it's predecessor. That club stayed in my bag for five years!

Like anything else driver related, a fitting is always the best option. The advantage of the M1 together with it's adjustable loft, is that the weight from front to back can be altered too - which in turn has an effect on launch and spin. Weight moved further to the back of the club will increase launch angle and spin, while weight moved froward towards the face will reduce spin and launch angle.

This has the benefit of fine tuning the launch parameters independently of the loft setting. Again, if you have a less than optimal fit in terms of length, weight and flex (which should be performed before anything else) then you will struggle to use the loft and weight adjustability of the M1 to much of an advantage for driver fitting. And don't expect it to cure any ballfight issues that are the fault of your swing.\

But for anyone with a repeatable swing with a lowish handicap (5.1 sounds fine to me  :D )then the adjustability offered by the M1 can help you to find more yards through optimisation.

My thoughts exactly Jaskanski and my swing does repeat for what it's worth so at least I have that going for me. I got one for 299. I will take it to a fitter and go from there. :)

Rev, one thing I saw that works well for me with the 430 head is to flip flop the weight positions in the track.  You might not see that need as I did, but remember it is an option to do as well to move the mass around even more.  I have the heavier weight in the rear track now and the weight ALL the way back to Higher.  They're very adjustible and you can really dial the head in.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

Thanks Rookie I'm going to a local fitter tomorrow to tune it and consider other shaft options than stick. Its $100 but will be well worth it IMO.

Did you try swapping the weights around?  I was seeing just meh results with it till I flipped them around.  When I did, it made a drastic improvement for me, especially in the dispersion department.
