My first Handicap.

Millis3

Recommended Posts

Hi all, been playing now since January and recently got my handicap which I was surprised to find out was 16, (I was expecting something more around 20) just wondered if anyone has any tips to improve or tips to play steady rounds keeping to my handicap? Is it wise to go all out or best to play safe, also how often should I be playing to get better? Cheers Joe.

Hi Joe -- welcome to the Forum!

I'm not one for giving golf advice, but playing a couple of times a week helps me a ton.  I haven't had the opportunity to practice as much as I'd like this season, and it shows.  People I trust tell me practicing from 100 yards and in, plus some time on the putting green, is the best use of your practice time.  Personally, I've been on and off with the driver this season as well, so I try to get some reps in there.

As for playing it safe - a teaching pro told me not to try any shot on the course that I can't hit three times in a row on the range.

Not sure if any of this helps, but it has helped me some.

Welcome Joe.  When I started playing golf 25 years ago, I thought I was a reasonable athlete, pretty average really, but I thought I could learn the game on my own.  I was wrong!  After struggling for a few years, I finally took lessons.  I had to "unlearn" everything, but I was much better off for it.  You are doing well to start off as a 16, but if you see an instructor I think you could do much better very quickly.  An instructor will help you understand what you need to do and put you on a path to get there.  It's hard to do that by yourself.  In the long run the advice you receive will help you more than all the playing you do on a course.  With that said...  your HCP will go down the fastest with a LOT of short game practice.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

First off Millis3; you don't want to keep your handicap where it is. Going low is all that matters in this game. Remember - Going low is hard. Going high is easy. Take your pick.

It's weird to say work on your short game because there is all sorts of data out there that suggests that you should work on your approach shots.  Having written that working on your short game particularly pitching does have a salutary effect on your longer game as those are basically mini swings and there is less wear and tear on the body.

Probably the best thing to do is analyze your game a bit to see where your weaknesses are and work on that but don't neglect the short game ever.

Good luck, you're off to a great start.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Obviously, you have to work on those parts of the game where you are weak, but if I didn't constantly work on my short shots, I would be a sure 12 and not

Welcome to the dark side, LOLZ!  Now, that little number will hover over your golfing life forever, HA HA HA!!  All kidding aside, I'm in the "work on your short game" camp.  I think it's the best way to consistently play well, even when you can't practice as much as maybe many of us would like.

"Where'd it go?"  "Right in the Lumberyard..."

Welcome to the forums! Wow! You must be very athletic you're already a 16 handicapp that us awesome. Just one advice to give to a newbie, be patient and don't get frustrated. There will be up's and down's in this game and that's a fact, but to let it consume you is to let the game get to you. At the end of the day, it is just a game after all....was that more than one advice...oops. Enjoy this fantastic game!!!

Thanks for all the replies sorry I'm late getting back, I've taken on all your advise and booked in a lesson for my putting, I think that is my biggest let down. My iron play seems to be pretty good and think that will just improve more with time. Tanks for all the replies really helpful 🏻
