Wedge Shaft

Recommended Posts

I had been doing some reading and I always felt my wedge was heavier than all my other clubs but i just attributed it to the head, but i found out that the shaft is 40 grams heavier than my iron shafts. Is this something I should look into replacing to make it closer in weight to my irons (rsi1 stock shaft reax reg)? Also, how much would a different shaft help with spin (currently an MD3 with stock TT S300)

A lighter shaft increases swing speed and launches the ball a bit higher......as the wedge hafts are shorter, I am okay with a firmer shaft.

I'm sure a couple of the fitters on here will jump in with more info but here's my thoughts.

First is there something you dislike about the wedge right now?  I know it's heavier, but does that mean you don't like the feel or wish it did something differently?  If nothing is inherently wrong with it then no you don't need to change anything.

Going with a much lighter shaft is going to change the swing weight considerably and make the wedge feel differently.  That could be good or bad depending on you as a player.

Personally I match my wedge shafts to my iron shafts, but I already play a heavier iron shaft so it matches.  I'm not looking to add spin, I'm just looking for a feel that is consistent with my irons.

If you are trying to gain additional spin with your wedges you could look into the DG Spinner or KBS Hi-Rev wedge shafts, but those are still both heavier shafts.  You could also look at putting an 8i shaft into the wedge that matches your irons.  That would also add a little spin and give a more consistent feel, but it's probably going to mess up the swing weight since your irons shaft is so much lighter.

Lastly, as always with equipment questions on the internet, your best option to find something that works for your swing is go see a good fitter and try a bunch of different options.

I am looking to get more consistency and an spin out of it. Sometimes it does feel like it's just super heavy. Before I went and met with a fitter I was trying to get a general idea of how people approach this particular scenario.

What wedge are you talking about?  If it is a PW or GW, it might be nice to have it feel like your 8i, 9i.  If it is a SW or LW, I would tend to keep it on the heavy side, but that's just me since I don't usually hit full, high shots with those clubs; more like 80%.  I think the heavier weight is beneficial out of bunkers. I've tried lighter shafts in these wedges, and it affects my tempo.  The shafts in my 9i through LW are all the same, 98g.  My 5i through 8i are 80g.  All shafts are graphite.

This is for a SW 56°. I find myself hitting some full shots with it from about 100 yards. I understand the idea of heavier, but sometimes it just feels almost too heavy.

So why not just get the matching 55 degree Rsi 1wedge?

Please don't take this the wrong way, I truly mean it as constructive.

As a 24 handicap I think you will gain more consistency with practice and lessons than you will with a shaft change in your wedge.

Definitely not taken in the wrong way. That's a little out dated but it's still not low. I've dropped about 7.5 strokes since 5/1/16 to a 21.8 in today's revision so i'm starting to get a much better feel for my equipment. I understand lessons/practice will always be beneficial, i've just probably spent too much time reading about fitting.

I also go with the same shafts in my wedges that are in my irons. Just gives me piece of mind and I prefer having the same feel when I'm hitting full shots with my wedges. Mizuno does a nice job of providing a ton of shaft options at no up charge so it made it pretty easy.

I know i could use lessons and would definitely gain more from that than just switching equipment, but finding time ( and $) to do lessonw is tough as of now. I have the swing byte, but wedge my wedge shts are a bit different than my full swing, and i don't get as much carryover info.  As of now, i have to go to the range at 6AM one my way to work to get some practice in.

I tried to make my own version of a spinner shaft by using the same shaft in my wedges as my irons, but one flex softer. it worked well, until it didn't and I just just switched out my 50, 55 and 50 shafts from KBS Tour stiff to KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 in X and they are awesome with high spin and great feel for me.

I think the stock shaft for the MD3 is the S200. Which is also the same stock shaft for most all oem's it is commonly referred to as the wedge flex. If you do happen to,have the S300 shaft, it is slightly heavier than the S200, but it also has a stiffer overall profile than The S200, if you hit the ball okay and it does what you want with the stock shaft, I wouldn't worry too much about switching them.

It really depends on the person. I am quite a bit out of the box on mainstream thinking. I will warn you what I tell you is not etched in stone. My PW @47* I play a TT S - 300 High Launch Soft tipped 1x

My Gap wedge I play a KBS Tour Wedge Shaft in it stiff tipped

My 56 and 60 wedges I play a TT Sensicore soft tipped 1x

I know it sounds funny but for me I do it for a reason. I hit different shots different ways. I hit my 56 and 60 extremely high and basically go upstairs to drop and stop. I also do the same with my PW

Now I have my 52* gap set like that because I hit a one hopper with that quite a bit

Good basic example on say a 105 yard if I want it to drop and stop I hit the 56. On the same yardage if I want to hit a 1 hopper or a runner I use the 52.

This works for me and it is sorta quirky like me but I just thought I would add some food for thought

If you're playing the stock reg shafts then they are 65 grams. The s300 wedge shaft is 130 grams, exactly double the weight of your iron shafts. It has to feel awful for you. If you're playing 65 gram iron shafts you're going to want a wedge shaft in the 75-90 gram range. Don't worry about swing weight when you reshaft as long as you go to a club builder and not a club gluer as they'll ensure they build to whatever swing weight you request through the use of tip weights and/or tungsten mixed with the epoxy.

So i ordered a KBS Hi Rev shaft, based on doing some research on shafts it seems to make the most sense. Overall cost isn't too bad so I can live with it if it's not for me. I'll keep you guys updated.

I've got it in my 56, bet you'll like it. I enjoy the stopping power it adds to my swing.

  • 2 weeks later...

So the results are limited to 2 nights and a few shots, but so far this feels like the right decision. It was the only club I hit good on full swings tonight and there is noticeably more spin (stuck one from 100 out). I'll update once I get more swings.
