Putter grip question

So I got a Loudmouth midsize putter grip and to my surprise it's just a tad bigger than standard.

 

I know some people will build up standard grips up to a midsize.

 

Any rough idea how many wraps would be needed? Will it change the feel of the grip? (less cushiony, stretched thin, etc.)

It would depend on the core size of the grip compared to the od size of the shaft butt. For example, a .600" core grip on a .600" butt would normally need 4 layers of tape to get to the +1/32" which is generally considered "midsize". Generally speaking, if the core is smaller than the butt you need less tape, if the core is larger than the butt you need more tape.

However - putter grips do not generally follow the grip sizing methodology, simply because the design of putter grips is totally different from normal round grips and therefore do not stretch or expand in the same manner. It's still possible to build up the thickness with tape, but the overall shape, feel and feedback will be guesswork. 

Several grips and trial and error may be required....

Sounds like you're going the new grip route, which is cool.  Another thing for anyone who grips at home, if you were to try this with a Super Stroke or similar grip, I don't think you'd get it to install with multiple layers of tape on the putter shaft.  I can barely get those grips on with ONE layer of tape underneath!

Putter grips can be tough to get on.  If it won't go on with air, it's not going on my clubs.

I still use the old solvent tape method... just wanted to make sure building up a normal grip doesn't work the same way with putter grips, which has been confirmed by you guys.
