Peaksy68
Ok, nearby (within 20 minutes) Curlewis GC (my club) 13th Beach, Beach and Creek Courses Barwon Heads GC All in Aus top 100 courses, and accessible, Barwon Heads more exclusive (and snobby) Lonsdale GC Portarlington GC Not as good, but still solid A bit further, 40 minutes RACV Torquay The Sands Both have some really good holes, and some that are a bit meh. All the above can play very tough, as the wind can really blow here. Within an hour or so (with ferry trip) there are another bunch of great and good courses on the Mornington Peninsula. The Dunes St Andrews Beach Moonah Links (2 courses) The National (3 courses) Portsea There's another 10-15 courses over there that vary from pretty basic to pretty good. Most are accessible, with The National most expensive. 849 Pro Evenflow Riptide 6.0 F8 3 & 5 Woods Project X Evenflow Blue 6.0 TS2 7 Wood Project X Evenflow Blue 6.0 MP18 MMC - Project X LZ 5.5 Zipcore Wedges 50,54,58 - Project X LZ 5.5 MLA Tour Mallet 33" Z Star Pioneer bag buggy

PlaidJacket
This is kind of sad... but we don't really have any "top courses" in my immediate area/town. My club doesn't qualify. It's OK but not a top recommended course. Texas is kind of large you know. Additionally, I live in W. Texas. Places in Texas like the Ft. Worth/Dallas metro, Houston, Austin, San Antone, East Texas ,etc have a lot of courses in their backyard. The courses I consider Top and would recommend are more than an hour drive for me but I'll list them anyway. The others can vary between good to goat ranch depending on the season and current climate conditions. I personally have no problem traveling a couple of hours on a weekend to play a TOP course. I know golf digest publishes a list, but I've found sometimes this list misses out on real nice courses that only locals know. I remember playing 2 of the RTJ courses in muscle shoals, AL and I got lucky when a guy on the range let me know about a few other courses to try in the area. Even luckier, both where near our hotel. revkev
An hour drive from me brings far too many courses into play to even begin to list. Included in those courses will be very good pluses that can be had for under 50 so there's not need to go below that. Also because of the peculiarities of Florida Golf there are any number of quality private clubs that may be found on Golf Now about 6 months out of the year (right now.) Also it would depend upon what a person wants as to what I would recommend but here goes my list within an hour's drive (Brooksville is 60 miles and an hour so long as it's not rush hour) Innisbrooke Island or Copperhead both TOP TPC Tampa Bay TOP Dunedin Country Club Very Good plus (gets this rating because it's a Donald Ross course that was once the winter home of the PGA tour) Bardmoor Very good plus (IMO it's over rated, it's Bayou's sister course and used to hold a tour event, great layout but has so much play that rounds take too long and tees are in spotty condition - the rest of the course is always in great shape) World Woods Both courses TOP Streamsong TOP (I haven't played any of the courses yet because they are so new that they have yet to offer any specials and my Bayou membership precluded spending any other serious golf dollars( Stonybrook Very Good (this is South of me - there are three or four other courses right around it that are all good to very good - this one happens to be my favorite of the group others will go with Water Leaf, some River Strand (sadists) some University Park - you get the picture it would be a nice stay and play destination) To further complicate matters Orlando Courses are 1:15 away from me so that brings stuff like Falcon's Fire, Champions Gate (less than an hour), Orange County National, Disney stuff (all over priced and not great values unless you find a special) into play as well. Finally these are just the ones I recommend to friends - there are so many that it is impossible to exhaust the enjoyable courses in my area (true of most places in Florida) and there really is no reason to a play a dog. Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60 Aldila R flex - 42.25 inches SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft Ping G410 7, 9 wood Alta 65 R flex Srixon ZX5 MK II 5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex India 52,56 (60 pending) UST recoil 75's R flex Evon roll ER 5 32 inches It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Kenny B
Playing Golf in the Tri-Cities, Washington I live in the desert, about 200 miles east of Portland Oregon and about the same SE of Seattle. It rains about 7 inches a year which means that we can play golf nearly year round, if you like playing in very hot summers and sometimes very cold winters. Since we don't get much rain, we also don't get much snow. However, you can drive for a few hours in any direction for wonderful snow skiing, and the Pacific Ocean is only 5 hours away. We have plenty of water (at the moment); the Columbia River flows out of Canada through Washington and empties into the Pacific Ocean. The Snake River flows out of Wyoming through Idaho and empties into the Columbia River in town, as does the Yakima River flowing from the Cascade Mountains to the west. Lots of water activities here. When I started playing golf in the early 1990's, there were six 18 hole golf courses in my community. The population was less that 100,000 people. One new 18-hole course has been added, and the total population is now about 200,000. So, we are needing more courses as evident by my course being crowded most days. I wouldn't say that we have top quality courses, but most are nice in their own way, and we have a few dog tracks that attack a different crowd. Here is my summary of courses that I will play in my area. Columbia Point GC My course. Not long; suits a senior at only 6600 from the tips, Blue tees are 6100. Par 37/35 =72 Few trees, but some come into play. Lots of artificial mounds were added that make for difficult lies off the fairway. Water in play on a few holes. Lots of well-placed bunkers. Maintained in good shape all year long. A fairly new course, CP used to be a short par 66 course called Sham-Na-Pum with a 9-hole par 3 course. Sun Willows GC My brother-in-law plays here. Used to be Pasco Muni years ago, but is now managed by the same company as Columbia Point GC. Older layout with challenging holes. Relatively few trees, mostly around tees and greens. Not a long par 72 course at 6740, but White tees are longer at 6300 yards. Horn Rapids GC The newest course in the area built for a housing development, but houses don't come into play unless you really hit an errant tee shot; I've seen it done! Longer course at 7000 yards from the tips with a rating of 73.9 and slope of 139. Five sets of tees with Whites playing 6250. This is a desert course, and you don't really want to be off the fairway!! Not a walking course, unless you want to walk a long way between the green to the next tee. Nice course for straight hitters, which is why I like it. Water in play on only one hole. I used to be a member here. Canyon Lakes GC Highest rated public course in town; 4.5 stars by Golf Digest; also most expensive at $60, $80 with cart. Par 72 7000 yards; 73.8/131; 6200 Whites. Elevation change, sloping fast greens, and more water than other courses. The par 3 #12 green is 12,000 sq. ft. with lots of undulation. The par 4 #8 hole has the worse green in the entire state IMHO. Downhill tee shot with uphill second to a multi-tiered green sloping back to front; bunkers… Did I mention that the greens were fast! If you are on the back upper shelf and the pin is in the front, you can putt off the green… way off the green! I used to walk this course in my younger days; not anymore. Meadow Springs CC I guess I should mention the private country club. A very nice par 72 course designed by Robert Muir Graves nearly 7000 yards and rated at 73.3/132 from the tips. Each nine starts out flat but by the 2nd and 11th holes it starts up the slope of a mountain, turns and comes back down to the clubhouse. Lots of elevation change. Water in play on numerous holes. This course held Hogan, Nike, Buy.com, Nationwide tour events for years until the the membership decided that they didn't want to give up their course for play for a whole week. I have never played well on this course, and it's too expensive to be a member anyway, so don't look to me for a chance to play here. For a short drive these two course are very nice: Wildhorse GC Wildhorse is a stay and play Indian golf course and casino about an hour drive on the freeway to Pendleton, Oregon. It's 7100 yards and 74.2/129 from the tips; White tees play 6150. It's wide open golf over rolling hills with 5 lakes in play. Lots of bunkers; no trees. If you are traveling through on I-84, it's worth stopping to play. Wine Valley GC By far the best place to play in my area is Wine Valley GC just outside of Walla Walla, Washington. From the tips it's 7600 yards and rated 76.1/134… wow. The Black tees are 6800 and Blue tees are 6300; Whites are short at 5900. This course has hosted numerous state amateur events and the Northwest Open. It is also a U.S. Open qualifying course. If you are in the area, this is must play. It's about 45 minutes from me, and if you play Wildhorse, it's only 50 minutes from there. The fairways are wide open, and I do mean w-i-d-e open, but you don't want to miss them. Again… no trees, but the rolling hills do absolutely nothing to stop the wind. It's a lot of fun if you catch a windless day. The greens are very quick. My first round on this course I didn't miss a fairway and shot 78; my second round in the wind, I shot 95. EDIT: There are actually many nicer course than the ones in town that are within 2-3 hours drive. That's why my wife and I like to travel the northwest! “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
Jmikecpa
Only two public tracks near me that are worth the time and money to play: Bethpage (Red, Black or Blue) The Black is a beast and a really tough walk, even with a caddy. The Red and Blue are also nice tracks and have the luxury of a cart. Trump Ferry Point over the Whitestone. Not a bad layout, but on the pricey side. The course should mature over the next few years and really come into its own. As an added bonus, but outside of the 1 hour rule, I would include Montauk Downs. Really nice public track on the east end of Long Island. I try to get out and play it once every other year. jbil8802
Alright here's my list. Chambersburg Country Club - My club. It's private but if any of you guys are out my way I'd be more than happy to bring you out. Penn National - They have two courses, Founders (traditional parkland) and Iron Forge ("links" but not really - just tall fescue and not many trees) still a good course though. Both courses are in good shape. They do stay and play packages but it's a dry township so BYOB. The Links at Gettysburg - Just south of Gettysburg. Again not a true links course as it's in the middle of PA but still a great track. A little pricey but easy to find deals on GolfNow and their website. Just south in Maryland heading towards Frederick you've got Maryland National and Musket Ridge, both good courses. About an hour away is Rocky Gap which is a Jack Nicklaus signature design. It's a resort so they also have a casino and other resort related stuff. Anyway, if anyone is ever in the area shoot me a message and we can set something up. sp0rtsfan86
If you ever find yourself in Yuma prepare for meh at best and disaster at worst: Desert Hills: D+ decent layout, but the greens are terrible. They are usually very high and shag carpet rolls faster. Seriously, the greens need work. Bunkers are concrete in summer and ok in winter. Fairway and Rough usually are good. Mesa Del Sol: C: New Owner so the course is getting overhauled from near disaster. Greens are pretty nice but are slow to average at best. Fairways and Rough need a ton of work. Lots of spots that need grass that are in play (and where good shots should be rewarded.) That's probably biggest problem, is the maintenance hasn't been there at all. Course's bunkers are pretty decent. Arnold Palmer design for what it's worth. Las Barrancas: C: Probably the best greens in town, which isn't saying too much. Course is in very rough shape with permanent winter rules all year because of rocks and junk in fairway and rough. A few holes have fairways that are so close to rough you can't tell. No sand on course, but does have grass bunkers. Coyote Wash: C-/D+. Course was real rough last time I played it. Has 2 nines- one that was designed by homebuilder and one by a professional. A legit half mile separates the two 9's (1-5, and 16-18) are same designer and the others are the professional. Greens are mediocre shape but do remember them being really nice last summer. When it's in great shape the course has a really great 9, but again that's not been the case recently, and the first 4 and last 5 are mediocre holes by every stretch of the imagination.
