Could you use a Tune-up?

Recommended Posts

Today I met with my instructor/coach/pro. I needed a tune-up. As of late my ball striking has been spotty with a lot of weak shots. Subsequently, my scores have been inching upward. Here's some of the main points we discussed and worked on.

1. Ball Position. Moved the ball up in my stance. Lately I've been inching the ball back too far in my setup/stance. For instance, with a 6i I had the ball about where an 8i should be positioned. Result: increased distance. Higher ball flight.

2. Club-face. I have been addressing the ball with a slightly open face. Probably not more than 1 degree. Make sure your club-face is square. Results: more centered impact, increased distance, straighter ball flight. Initially the club may look slightly closed. Pro Tip: Using an alignment rod, setup with your iron (no ball) using the rod as a straight edge. Square your iron against the rod. This will provide you a reference as to how the face should look when addressing the ball.

3. Make a good left shoulder rotation and finish with a full rotation back through with hips finishing at the target. In other words... don't quit on the shot. Finish. Result: more distance. straighter ball flight, more solid impact. Additionally, we also discussed maintaining spine angle and driving my right shoulder through.

See... None of this is earth shattering. You're saying.... Plaid, I've heard all this before. Like maybe a 1000 times. Me too! Especially some of you older guys if you're losing distance check yourself with a few of these fundamentals and see if it helps you. I know it will for me. I lose distance when I get lazy.

I enjoy it greatly when we meet and I have another set of eye-balls on my swing and ball flight. It's always the little things that we let slip away when our game begins going south. Also I haven't been practicing much (hardly any really) due to the summer heat. I think it's well worth the the effort to occasionally do this. It's not free; but well worth the money.

Good Luck guys

Sounds great. Once the golf season is here I just practice more if something isn't working and just go and play as my time is limited. But, I take lessons in the Winter and got them set up a few weeks ago.

I'm always curious why someone wouldn't have them coach you in this sport, played a lot of sports and always had coaches, golf is no different.

Ask around Foz. I'd imagine there are plenty in your area. I think it's worth it every so often.

Also, my coach today said when we were discussing my open club face issue, he cautioned; not rotate my grip back to square; but to take a new grip when making the adjustments. If that makes sense. Otherwise your hands will out of position.

Great tips Plaid!  Thanks.

Are you a member at a course where you can pull the pro aside for a bit and ask for some advice or do you go to the coach/pro and have him/her take a look?

Just out of curiosity how much do they charge for something like that in west texas?

Stroker, I work with a Pro at another club from where I play. He's really not on staff there but plays out the club. He's been trying to play his way onto the Champions Tour. Made it a couple of times but it's tough. In fact he's on his way today to Minneapolis to try and qualify for the 3M Championship. My guy charges me $65/hr. It's not an hour of hitting balls. Lot's of discussion and him showing me things. Providing tips, etc. I ask lots of questions also. I always come away feeling more confidant with improved ball striking.

Wow that is a *deal* compared to regular lesson rates here in NY (on Long Island), plus you get a real playing pro - very nice!!!

Just goes to show - spend a small amount of coin on lessons, instead of a lot of dollars on new equipment and you will more than likely get better results.

Reminds me, if I'm going to get to a 10 H'cap in the next 6 months I need to book in for a grease & oil change........

  • 2 weeks later...

I just bought a Cobra king Ltd and was having trouble adjusting to it. I went to the range tonight and brought my TourEdge and my king, also a 5i and 60 degree. I was hitting my 60 like usual, just easy as pie. My 5i took me 3 swings to fix but the driver was tough. I alternated between both and found the cobra a better fit. I was either pulling straight left to a hook, or power fading it. I decided to setup my cell and record a couple of swings and noticed right away that my takeaway was off. Was able to fix that I after a couple swings was long and straight 😁
