Breaking the 80's!

Last night I finally got my old man to come and have a round with me at my local club, he's always refused to play there saying it's far to hard for him. It's a links course and he's used to play flat open courses. We both started playing in January but I joined my local club and play 2/3 times a week and he's a weekend player. To help him out we went off the yellows as the wind was strong and I didn't want to be to harsh on him , I'm a 16 handicap and me previous best from the y is 80, that all changed last night!!! I've been practicing my putting like crazy changing my grip and slowing things right down, taking my time to read the greens and taking 2 test swing before taking my shot...... Last night it all payed off and I managed to shoot 74! It was a perfect round of golf and I'm really happy my dad was there to witness it. Congrats. I've only done it once, earlier this year. I wish I could play more in the low 80's but as of late I still can't get it together.

I hope to see you there next year. I'm still waiting to get under 90.

Took me years to break 90. Another good half dozen years to break 80 from there. It's all about learning what works for you. Only way I shoot low is when my putter is on fire, my irons are good and my drives are serviceable. I've figured I need probably 2-3 lucky putts a round to break 80, the type you overhit and somehow smash into the hole or long ones.

Last time I shot in the 80's was before I started playing by the rules.

Congratulations!!  Great score; feels wonderful doesn't it?  My comment is that there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in distance between the Whites and the Yellows on most holes (meters, I assume).  Typically in my area the difference is about double that.  So....  now that you have shot a low score, and know that you can do it, you should be looking to break 80 from the Whites soon!!  Good luck!
