The quest for a new putter

I thought I'd share my new putter story with everyone. My putter is the one constant in my bag. I'm not one to go out and buy the latest and greatest, but my last putter has lasted three drivers over the course of 4-5 years.

The end of last year I started thinking about a new putter. I was starting to get "bored" with my Odyssey White Ice #1. I don't remember when I bought it, but it was on sale at The Galaxy of Golf, so probably around 2011-2012. Between when I bought it and April of this year, I made a few changes that kept it in the bag and restored my confidence with it: painted the head flat black(cut down the horrible glare), covered the bottom with lead tape(swinging it was like night and day), and adding a SuperStroke grip.

This season starts and I make it a point to find a new flat stick!(alerts media, sends runner to neighboring villages, trumpets, blah blah blah).  So I go to The Galaxy of Golf and try every putter that was aesthetically pleasing to me. Two hours later, I leave without a putter-search continues. The next day, I return and go back to the few "maybes" and putt. An hour and a half and still no putter and I leave. Day 3 I go to Dick's and try basically the same ones-nothing. Day 4 I decided to head out to the golf store at Turning Stone Casino. That store makes the big box stores look like closets haha. Once I got there I immediately headed to the putter section. I tried almost everything: Bettinardis, every Odyssey blade from the Metal X to the RX, every Scotty blade, a couple TM blades, some Yes! blades, Ping blades, etc. Finally, just for kicks I grab an Odyssey Works Versa 7. I remember watching Luke Donald putt and saying "I really love how his putter sets up, I really like it." I often talk to myself, we have some great exchanges  :P. So I grab this Millennium Falcon looking thing on a stick, find a ball and putt. Immediately after impact, I thought "this is it, this is the one!" (trumpets sound, golden beam of light shines on putter).

Within a few days I had my new putter, I bought mine on Ebay. I paid $107 for it brand new, the casino still wanted the full retail price. I would never have thought I'd have a mallet putter in my bag if I didn't watch Luke Donald putting. I'm more a traditionalist when it comes to clubs, so naturally I gravitated to Anser style blades. This one just felt great swinging it and at impact. It's also blue and stainless, so that was a positive selling point haha

After having said that, does anyone else go through a long and arduous process picking putters, or any other club, for that matter?

Sorry it's long, but I wanted to convey my thoughts as best I could.

Nothing is really a long process for me. That is why I have a basement full of clubs and over 100 putters.

Yes several trips back to the store. That #7 is so good; alignment wise.

I can putt well with anything, I especially like the look of the 2011 Scotty Cameron California Monterey, but know I should use my Ping karsten tr anser 5 because it's a more "natural" fit.

Last Fall, I decided to have a putter made, so I went to the Bellum-Winmore website and custom ordered....Before they assembled it, they sent me pix in an email showing the Loft, Lie and Length of the components for my approval....I have been putting with it all season and have a few misgivings, but not due to the putter, just due to my swing, so instead of looking for another, I started adjusting my grip and stroke......Now I am in love with the putter all over again. Why did I choose Bellum-Winmore? From the review on My Golf Spy, of course.

The Versa 7 is a great putter. It just frames the ball so well.

But I ended up on a putter search this year, after a short time with a smaller mallet head, I decided to go with the SC X7M. It only took one trip to the store for me. It felt and performed great from the start.

It has been a huge improvement in my putting this year.

The Versa #7 really does frame the ball well.  I was quite surprised when I addressed a ball, it just looked so good. My buddies were even more shocked when I told them I bought a mallet.

My biggest problem during this quest was when I got to the Scotty section. Every Newport blade, 1.5-2.5, I tried multiple times. I think I was trying to like them just because it was a Scotty.

Definitely, the ping karsten isn't as sexy as that Scotty

I was the same way. I had a old half mallet I got from Odyssey probably 10 years ago. After the first two years of semi bliss, I started going to golf stores with the idea of getting a two ball from odyssey. Over the course of 3-4 years I tried every mallet and half mallet out there but didn't find anything i liked. One day I took a trip to get golf balls to the Galaxy of Golf (now black hole of golf near me). I found a 8802 style putter and couldn't believe how much I liked it. I get it custom fit and first 10 putts I made 9 of them from probably 20 feet. It's been in my bag ever since, although I have once again been perusing the putter stands.

I'm on the same quest now... been through so many putters I can't count.  I buy/resell/buy/resell/buy/resell...

I realized that

1. I need a putter with a high MOI since I suck at putting

2. I need a mallet instead of a blade

Next on my to-try-it-list is the winner of the 2016 MGS mallet putter Ping Cadence mid mallet.

I think I'm going to try the 33 inch version as I've heard good things about shorter putters vs longer ones.

Also on my radar is the white rx #7 or v-line fang... both seem good.

Has anyone gone from a 34/35 inch putter to a 33 inch version and had success?

I don't know where you fall on Scotty's but the X7M is the best putter I've ever used, and that's saying a lot.    It's forgiveness is just incredible, you have to make a really really bad stroke for it not to finish very close to the hole.  and I've made more 15 to 20 footers this year alone than I've made in say the last three years combined.

I am 6'5" so I've never had a short 33 or 34 inch putter, but I did go from a 38 down to my current 35" and had no problems.  I tried the 38" in both blade SeeMore DB4 and Mallet Toulon Memphis (although I think that's more of a mini-mallet) and the weighting just never felt right so I was more comfortable going back to 35"

I should add a very good friend and regular playing partner cut his 35" Betti down to 33" and hated it.   he is very short and it was recommended by a fitter and he never took to it at all and felt it ruined the putter.

Have you looked at the Versa #7    it was my gamer before the SC, it is really really good as well.  It sounds like you wanted a 33" but if you think you could use a 35", I'd be willing to send it to you to try out, and if you like it, just make me an offer of any kind on it, if not you could send it back.

Thanks for the offer!

Going to Golfsmith tonight and going to try out the 7 and a couple others.  I'll let you know how it goes, but I think 35 is too long for me.

Cool, it's an open offer.  Just let me know anytime.

Another option to try for high MOI is CURE, they are not Mallet style but the heads are so big you pretty much get the same affect.  If the Scotty had not worked out so well for me, I was going to look at them as well.

Tying putters is fun!!

  • 2 weeks later...

I apologize for the tardiness to my own post.

I switched from a 35" to 34". For me my eyes are better positioned with the shorter putter. Before I bought the new one, I was gripping down an inch on my old putter.  I did try a 33" and it wasn't comfortable(5'10" with long legs, short torso).

My Versa Works #7 frames the ball well in my eyes. The stainless finish is nice and doesn't give off the glare like my old White Ice.
