Callaway Brings Back the Steelhead

Recommended Posts

Not sure if you saw the blogs today -- but Callaway is resurrecting another blast from the past -- the Steelhead XR irons and hybrids.

The Steelhead XR's are replacements for the 2-year old XR Game Improvement irons and hybrids.  As you'd expect, Cally says they're longer, easier to hit, more forgiving and will make excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar....

You can check out the irons here...

And the hybrids here.

As far as appearance goes, they look exactly like what they are, a Game Improvement iron, which is something Callaway does very well.

What are your thoughts on the new Steelhead's?

My initial reaction is that the retro revival of model names is getting a little much and aesthetically, these don't do much for me and look similar to the OS XR while the hybrid looks very Big Bertha ish. With that said, I expect they'll be distance monsters and very forgiving so will definitely check out if I end up in the market.

As I mentioned in the comments on the blog, I doubt these will perform much better than the xr's, but to the people with x2hot irons or older, I am sure they will get a nice little jump in performance by upgrading.

I am sure Callaway will be doing something similar with the fairways and drivers in the XR line.  I wonder what they end up doing to the Bertha line.

Biggest Big Bertha revival? (though since it is maxed out at 460, I don't see this option)

My first thought was another old product name brought back to life.  I think this is reaching the point of maybe overdoing it a bit on Callaway's part.  1 or even 2 names from the past are ok, beyond that I begin to question if there is really any new tech to brag about or just focus on a successful name from the past.

They may in fact be an improvement over the XR line due to the bore through hosel and longer blade, and if so that's great but why resurrect the name steelhead.

I remember meeting with Callaway and speaking with Harry about not just attaching names like 'Big Bertha' to every driver release like Callaway did in the early 2000s. However, it seems like callaway is slipping down that path again

It does seem so.

I wonder if they do any focus group studies before releasing a name. I've seen a lot of reaction today with the same feeling, pulling another name from the past and putting it on something new.

I currently game 2015 XR pro, forget about the name and hit them if you have doubts, the cally irons are as good as any in the market, and in some cases better, are the Mizzy? No, are they Miura? No, but the lineup they have is good, and these are probably good as well. I'm not looking for new yet, but I will look at cally again when it's time.

The original Steelheads were out when I was still in school, so I never got the chance to try them - Dad had the King Cobra and Spalding irons in those days. I must say though that these XR irons are very good-looking, and I might be tempted to get the accompanying hybrid.

Driver: Cobra F9 Speedback (9.0) with Fujikura Atmos 7X (Avalanche White)

3 Wood: Callaway Epic Sub-Zero (15 degrees) in Rogue Max 75g stiff shaft

Hybrid: Callaway Apex 20 degree with Kurokage 80g Stiff Shaft

              Callaway MD4 - 56 & 60 degrees
