Circling Raven GC - Northern Idaho

Kenny B

Recommended Posts

My wife and I played Circling Raven GC last week in wonderful weather.  It's a Golf Digest Top 100 course with a hotel and casino located on the southern edge of Lake Coeur d'Alene.  Absolutely beautiful country.

The driving range...

The par 4 #4 hole has two fairways; there is a fairway on the other side of those bunkers.

Short par 4 #10; big hitters can go right of the tree to the green; us short hitters go left of the tree.

Long par 4 dogleg left #11

Par 5 #12; go right of the tree

Downhill par 4 #15; don't go long!!

Par 4 #18; a nice finishing hole.

It was fun.  I posted scores in the How'd You Play? thread.  But, I shot 85 the first day with a quad, DB, and a bunch of bogeys, but had 3 birdies.  The second day I shot 84 with only one DB and a bunch of bogeys, no birdies.  The greens had a lot of slope and very quick; hard to adjust.  Better ball striking day the second day, but didn't get anything out of it.   :(

Kenny. I think we'd have had a good match.

It would be fun.  I think you probably have me on distance, but I'll make up for it with enthusiasm.   ;)

We need to figure out a way to get together.  Maybe we can get together on one of your trips.  @wbealsd was thinking about a trip this fall.  Not sure what his current schedule is.

Both courses are great.  If you get a chance, play them both.  If I had to pick one, I would probably play Circling Raven, although I scored better on the CdA Resort course.  If you make it out this way, I suggest playing CdA Resort, Circling Raven, Palouse Ridge which is the WSU course in Pullman, and Wine Valley in Walla Walla.  Four really nice courses but that circuit is over 200 miles; well worth it though, especially if you invite me!

Northern Idaho is much different than SE Idaho.  Did you play Huntsman Springs?  Another David McLay Kidd design...  Check out my thread today about Gamble Sands in north central Washington state, another one of his designs on the Columbia River.  My wife and I are staying there Friday night and playing Saturday.

I did play Huntsman! It's amazing! Check out my review and photos of the property! ~ http://www.thescratchlist.com/huntsman-springs-golf-club.html
