Amazing experience

As a pastor of a large church I've been blessed to meet some incredible people. I've given the opening invocation for the state houses in two states, for a VP, a major party's state convention (I was their chaplain which let me sit through dinner next to a former presidential press secretary and for that matter the future governor of Wisconsin), also for St. Petersburg City Council on any number of occasions (I'm on their regular rotation and they like to tap me whenever they have a controversial issue up for discussion).

Yesterday was the most amazing Civic occasion that I've ever taken part in.  I have a member of my church who is retiring from the Army as a Colonel.  I shouldn't mention this person's name or what their job was so I won't.  It was an amazing experience though.  I was actually met in the parking lot and chaperoned around by another officer and met a very, high ranking general.

The ceremony itself was so moving and I was incredibly proud of my church member.  I knew that this person had an important job.  I didn't know it was this important.  To me they have always been a parishioner.

On another note I went to see a Colonel's widow who is leaving this world today.  I gave her the Lutheran equivalent of last rites.  Somehow it seemed appropriate.

Very nice Rev. It's not surprising those with the most important positions and duties rarely speak of them. It's seems it's those who try to embellish their accomplishments are much more common.

It says a lot about you, that they reached out to you to speak.

So sorry to hear of the other Colonels Widow eminent passing.

Just amazing the whole post. Rev what a job you do!!-----  I guess your last rites are simular to ours I learned about ours in Confirmation class last fall---- I also learned that a layman like myself can do them in an emergency if there are not any Ordained clergy around-- not something I would look forward to but if I had to I would

We do the same thing to Stu - I have three very capable laymen who will step in to the fray if needed.  I love those guys.  They are incredible.  One of them is down right now with a knee replacement.  My congregation gave me a lovely new communion set to commemorate 10 years of service there (23 years as a pastor).  I got to use the set to commune him at the ortho rehab center for its first use.

I've had to hold the hand of too many people heading towards heaven lately.  It is what I do but it's always bittersweet.

trust me when we do The Prayers Of The People liturgy every week and it gets to the part about our ministers in the faith and other ministers you are mentioned by me have been ever since I got to know you on here. I am back doing two services again on the board because the lady that was running the 9:00 service her and her family left our church for what ever reason. So now you get a double dose of prayer from me
