What is your level of patience?

So go out today to my club for weekend men's club play.  When we play w/our men's club we get discounted greens fees.  We sign up for weekend play through email and Club Pres. makes the pairings and times.  So I'm paired up with this father/son duo who are very active in the club.  Perfectly nice people.  Our club is a 36 hole facility and one course is closed for maintenance so the course we played the routing is one big counterclockwise loop.  That's where the problem starts.  It was fairly windy today and the front nine plays downwind and the back nine plays straight into it.  The problem is that both of these guys are high spin players.  I had a feeling this might be a problem when we made the turn.  We got around the front in about 2 hours.  Not bad.  But when we made the turn is when their balls started flying off of the planet.  And these are the type of guys that no matter how far offline they hit it they look for it.  Long enough story short after 37 minutes on the back 9 we hadn't all even reached the 11th green.  Where we had been keeping up with the group in front of us we were in danger of already falling a hole and a half behind.  Groups were stacking up on the tee box.  Maybe its just me but this requires a level of patience I don't have.  A tournament round I can kinda understand.  But for fun, handicap maintenance rounds its more than I can take.  I picked up on the 11th green and told them I had to meet my wife shortly somewhere and left.  I gotta email the club pres. and ask him not to pair me with those two again.  Oh, and the dad keeps up a running self analysis of why he's playing like shiat too.  Man, just put a bullet in me already.  Do you have people like that in your club?  How do you handle it?

Haaa.. you're the only one. Ever! First, I find it interesting that you are a member of a club yet still pay a green fee? oh well.

Yes, I think everyone has played in a slowwwwww round before. Can't say I've ever given up and quit because of it. I have however pointed out to the slow-play offenders that they have the entire course backed up and I'm moving on. Yes, I've done that. I played the hole and went to the next tee and hit my shot. There are times when searching for a ball isn't worth it. It's gone and everyone knows it. I have patience to a degree. Next time you get into this situation tell the other players to move it and you keep playing. Don't quit.

I am pretty patient when it comes to a round of golf. What I can't stand is when people that work there don't do there job. Marshall's are there to keep the round going at a decent pace so everyone can enjoy their time out out on the field. What gets me peed off is when I see a marshall drive pass a hole that is three groups deep and the group on the green is falling behind by at least a hole and a half and does absolutely nothing. He drives around, filling up the water coolers and picking up trash all freaking day long. Ughhh! I need a cigarette now...

Well for starters many clubs offer different levels of membership.  Don't tell me this is news to you.  So rather than a full unlimited membership (which I've done before and decided its not a good idea) I have a membership that allows me to play for a greatly discounted fee.  I think a full membership would cost me about $3500 or maybe a little more.  I probably still spend that much annually on green fees.  However doing things this way I frequently travel to San Diego to play w/friends while still playing a considerable amount at my club.  Still have access to all club tournaments and such.  Its a good deal.  I should have also mentioned I have played w/these guys before.  Once was a tournament round where between the two of them they hit 5 balls off the tee on a par 5.  Sometimes there's people who may be perfectly likeable on a personal level but playing golf w/th them is like dentistry without novacaine.  Maybe its because the round lived down to expectations my frustration boiled over.  I suspect I'm not the only one in my club that feels that way about them.

I usually have a lot of patience, but there are times when it wears thin.  Yesterday was one of those days.  I was playing poorly, the weather was awful (very windy), and we were the last of 4 groups on the par 5 #13.  It didn't get much better after that hole either.  The Saturday men's group was slowing everyone up, but the wind made everyone spend more time than usual either getting ready to hit the ball or looking for it.  I just wanted to be done.  A bad 86 round with 6 double bogeys!  Today my wife and I played with a couple that we have seen at the club, but have never met.  They weren't all that good but they moved along and they were very nice.  It was a little more than a four-hour round and we didn't have to wait on any groups.  My wife shot an 84 with a triple bogey on a par 3; I shot 74.  I have more patience when I am playing well.

I acknowledge its as much me as them.  I was frustrated.  I was playing ok.  It just bugs me when people are tone deaf to the playing situation on the course.

I'm not that great a player (but improving!), but I do like to keep moving along also. Too much time standing around and waiting is a real buzz killer.

I get frustrated when people spend a RIDICULOUS amount of time pretending to read their putts when they don't really have the slightest clue what they're even looking at on the green.......... (and your group is clearly standing there waiting to hit up)

Anyway, I have frequently taken the flip side of the slow play situation: if paired with better players and there's an opening ahead of us I always encourage them to ditch us and move on. Sometimes when out with my wife and we just want to stroll along I've waved groups through, too.

I have a great amount of patience as well.   But over the last few years, I've been more to gently remind playing partners that "we" need to pick it up and get back on pace.   I always stress we even when I fully believe I'm not the culprit, and when i do believe I'm holding things up, I will certainly pick up and help the pace move along.

I would have tried that as opposed to simply walking off.  But I get how it can be awkward, and I've done the same as you in the past.  But i feel if nobody ever says anything to them, they will never realize it's a problem.

What I hate is when you get paired up at a course with people you've never met and they end up being really slow players. Then the marshal shows up and try's to tell me that "we" need to speed up. I politely explain to him that I have zero control over the people that his course paired up with me. They usually understand the situation and will go talk to the other people. I just don't understand how some people can be oblivious of the fact that they are holding up the entire course. My best golfing friend and I very fast golfers and have played 18 before in less than 2.5 hours so it can be really hard for us when we get paired up with the wrong people.

When my wife and I travel to play golf, we will likely get paired with two guys who are less than thrilled to be playing with a "woman".  Now I have quite a bit of patience, but my wife doesn't when it comes to the course marshall.  My wife and I are not speed golfers, but we aren't slow.  She is a 17 hcp at the moment.  If our group falls behind, the marshall ALWAYS comes up to US and tells us to pick up the pace.  My wife just says: "Watch our group for awhile before you come tell us that."  The marshall always assumes it's the lady that's slow.  It's always the other guys.

Back to the original question neither of the two clubs that I've belonged to would allow a round of more than 4 hours on a weekend morning assuming others were held up. For good or for bad you would all have been warned and another infraction would mean a suspension of weekend playing privledges for a month.

Bayou was brutally hard and I knew of no players at the club who played slowly even in tournaments. The advantage of a club is that almost everyone in the course knows it well. Members are reasponsible for their guests so they keep it moving.

Public and up scale daily fee courses are a different matter. Its every man for himself there. I'm back to that right now and adjusting. Most certainly I've gotten frustrated at pace of play and walked off the course before.

To add to my first post, my single biggest pet peeve is people choosing to play from tees where they have zero chance for a fit based on their distance. If you drive the ball 200 yds, you shouldn't be playing 440 yd par 4's, a 380 yd par 4 will be long based on that driving distance.

I have a high level of patience and don't think I'd have walked off the course unless I was on a deadline and had to leave to get somewhere.

The first time a marshal drove by I'd stop him, explain the situation and ask if he could forecaddy for us for a couple holes to get back on pace.  I'd also politely tell my playing partners that we were falling behind and I was going to play ready golf to try and get back on pace.

If that doesn't work after a couple holes and then I'm just going to move ahead and leave the twosome behind.  With a wife and 2 young kids when I get to play golf, I want to play golf.  It's going to take a lot to make me leave mid-round and miss out on a day of golf.

Is the club private or semi private? There's a huge difference of course. Rules are unforced at a private club. Once there are levels and daily fee play allowed it becomes a different matter.

First post here, but this topic gets me steamed too.

I am a member of a group of area courses, and the one that we normally play never forces groups together. I can play solo on a Saturday if I choose to.

A couple of them do merge small groups, and we have simply started laying out the 'rules' as soon as we get introduced.

- we play ready golf

- if the ball is OB, we take our lumps and move on. (no ball hunting)

I don't do a practice swing. I stand behind the ball, envision my shot, and then take it. A 10-whiffer really chaps me... I've been known to ask "you know, I don't do a practice swing - do you think it would help me play better if I took a few before I hit the ball?"

And, I'm not afraid after a couple of holes to urge a short hitter to try the forward tees. I've had guys say thanks, because they felt they should play the blues with us, and I've had guys get mad and split from our group. I'm happy either way!

I tried to play a 9 after work Tuesday and zipped through an empty course till the 5th hole when I run into a single with a cart playing two balls, figure he would let me play through. Wrong! guy hits two shots and continues to play two balls and turned my 9 into 2.5 hrs that would've otherwise been a 45-1hr. Sunset was 715pm finished closer to 8 in the dark. We had some words in the clubhouse and he let me play through Thursday. Courtesy or even some etiquette is becoming rare in these times.

It depends on a few things:

1) how am I playing. If I'm playing like garbage and I can't get anything of a rhythm I have no patience for slow play. IF I'm playing ok, it's probably better. If I'm playing well I'd be up their butts trying to keep a rhythm.

2) What's the cause? Charity event planned in advance, ok. Kids on the course just learning, no problem. New golfer: ok if he's picking up.  Golfers talking every hole before shots, taking 3 practice swings and duffing the ball and dropping another, or goofing around with the carts? That's where I lose it.

3) Is the course tough? If it's a tough one I get it. If it's a patsy course and it's backed up i'm more frustrated.

I came from learning as a kid, picking up often. I really learned how to golf playing on a longer executive course. I've played with old, young, college frat buddies, guys that just want to drink and hit a few balls, and a kid with pro potential. When you play as quick as I do, it's easy to pick out the slow golfer in every group and the people that could play faster.
