Wager ideas for 7 players

Wedgie

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just lost our 8th for our annual golf outing in Florida. We have always split into 2 teams of 4 and wagered accordingly in a team vs. team format. Any ideas on how to maintain teams with 3 vs. 4 and still have fair friendly wagers?

Thanks!

Skins are always good, since you won't be able to play as teams

You could still play as teams. We usually play as teams of 3 and 4 depending on the number of guys we have. We count the 2 best net scores on each hole. If one team is 3 guys, we usually do a blind draw where they get one of the guys from a foursome added to their team.

We've done a similar thing, only we've dropped one player in the 4some from each hole, so its 3 against 3 every time.  We try to make it pretty random, using this method.  The 4some lists each of their players on the card, whatever order they choose.  The other team, without seeing the card, selects a number from one to 4 (lets use 3), and up or down (we'll pick up).  The 4some then crosses out player 3 for the first hole, player 2 on the second, player 1 on the third, and starts at player 4 on the 4th.  You can do this easily by drawing an upward or downward diagonal lines.

We have this situation at least once a week in our group, where we have a 3some and a 4 some, or two foursomes and a threesome, etc. We regularly play 18/24. The threesome has to use 18 balls each nine holes, the foursome 24 balls. You choose how many balls to use after each hole. So, some strategy, you have to make sure to use enough balls, but you don't want to give away strokes early that you might pick up later. Repeat for the second nine.

The threesome divides their 'under' by 3 to come up with their score, the foursome dives by 4. So if the threesome was 16 under, their score is 5.33. The foursome would have to be 22 under to beat that. We've been playing that regularly for 3 years now, works out great. In fact, we now play it even with all foursomes because of the strategy element. Coming up to the last two holes needing 8 balls is daunting (especially since our #17 is the 18th handicap hole), 'cause one or two guys having a blow up hole can ruin your team score! So, really want to use enough balls through the early holes, even if they are not scoring balls.

Nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts.

Thanks for the creative input. Looks like I came to the right place for obscure golf issues I may be having.

Let us know how it works out.  I'm pretty happy now, I'm not sure I've ever been called "obscure"  before.  I'm going to assume its a compliment.

Of course you could always use the KISS format.

Have everyone pony up $20 at the start and play skins. Add up the skins at the end and split the pot.

Make individual side bets too.

Keep it simple.

We run in to this from time to time.  We just have the 4some play our normal game, then the 3some plays 9 point.  We then play $1 skins with all 7 guys.  Add up how many skins and it's a dollar per skin from everybody, then divide it out to the winners.

If you've never played 9 point it's pretty easy.  Each hole is worth 9 points.  They get split up based on what scores there are.  Par, bogey, bogey would be 5-2-2.  Par, Par, Bogey 4-4-1.  Par, Bogey, Double 5-3-1.  Birdie, par, par 7-1-1  etc.  Birdie or eagle is the only way you can get 7.

Then just figure out how much you playing for per point.  We usually play 50 cents or $1.  Low guy has to pay both players.  Middle guy get's paid by low and pays out to high.

We usually play 4 vs. 4 in a Ryder Cup format. 6 rounds in 3 days. Total points over the 3 days wins the pot and splits amongst the winners. Each foursome has side bets going each 18 as well but that is easy. Maintaining a Ryder Cup type format is what makes it hard with 7. Thanks again for all the input.

If you are giving strokes or using handicaps, the missing guys is par, meaning you just fill in par for every hole for the 8th guy. It actually doesn't help the way you would think. Of course it would depend on which type of games you would play.

  • 2 weeks later...

We often play 5 or 6 man wolf.

An order of tee off is chosen and players stay in that order. Except that who ever went first is the wolf and he can chose his partner after they hit their tee shot but before the next guy hits.

The wolf can go solo and it doubles the bet. This means 2 vs 3 or 2 vs 4 every hole. In 5 man wolf the wolf team plays for $3 each and the field team $2. Or a multiple of this for the big spenders.

I modified this for a game I called "blind wolf". 3 in one group and 4 in the other. They establish an order like in regular wolf. And the first to tee off is partnered with the first to tee off in the second group. The odd numbers means that everyone is paired together at some point. It's also 2 on 5.

I call it blind wolf because you have no idea what your partner has done or will do On that hole.
