Quality Hitting nets

Looking for items for a Christmas list...Any recommendations on a quality golf net for the backyard that won't break the bank?

 

What do you like about the one you have? Dislikes? Set up recommendations?

How often do you plan to realistically use the net? If it's only occasionally, check out what might be left at your area Golfsmith stores, if you have one closing in your area. I have a Callaway collapsible net that I don't use too often. I'd use it more if I had a decent range mat, or a steady supply of sod!

The mat that's in the pic of mine is from these guys: http://www.allturfmats.com/Ultimate-Monster-Tee-Golf-Turf-s/38.htm

 

They're thick enough to hit down on to simulate real turf and you can put a tee in them.

The mat is more important than the net. Any net that is solid enough to stop the ball will do, but you need a mat that will simulate real turf well.

 

I use off cuts from nylon fishing nets that I got from my professional fisherman brother in-law, but bought a good quality mat of my clubs old teaching pro.

 

If you have space, consider putting up a frame that you can leave in place, and just throw the net on when you want to use it.

I have owned two nets over time and both of them ended up in the dumpster eventually. My most recent was a Callaway model of some type. It was quite large.... 12'x9' and I liked it. However, it only lasted a little over a year outdoors and was like wrestling an octopus to put up and take down. Currently I don't have anything. I've talked with the folks at the outfit linked above and I'd probably buy one from them (if ever) next time. I have an overhead patio structure I can hang a net from which would be ideal for me. Of course this idea I have would be a custom built net of approximately 12'x10'. During my discussions with them we estimated my cost to be about $400. That's kind of high for a backyard net but it's custom made and my design will allow me to easily hang and remove/store it as needed. Certainly much easier than the shock-cord folding pole type of nets. Much more durable also.

 

I also have a great mat that people should consider. They're not necessarily cheap either but the best on the market I believe. Mine has been outdoors continuously for about 3 years with no sign of wear or decomposition.  My model is a 5'x5'.

Thanks to all. Saw a good deal on Rukkett Haack net on amazon that will work well. Appreciate the input on the mats as well. Plaid it is good to hear about the mat you referenced holding up outdoors for that long, I don't plan on moving my mat, only the net. Those are pretty pricey, but I imagine like everything else you get what you pay for.

I agree with Plaid. Get yourself a real feel mat. I have one and it is wonderful for hitting golf balls. Very well made and durable. You also won't have to worry about an overuse injury like you will with a cheap mat.
