Two more rounds on tap today - morning on the Pete Dye course, afternoon on the Wanamaker course. Never played a Dye course before - lots of bunkers (and I've been in many of them!) and contoured greens.

Pete Dye courses are evil (in a good way). We have a few here in Columbus. I enjoy playing them but I'm exhausted by the end of the round.

I'm not sure how the Dye course is that your on Barbajo, but the couple here are acceptable on the front 9 and then becomes downright hard on the back 9.

I love the Dye course. My brother in law lives in Port St Lucie and we stay at the resort when we go visit. I have played that course several times. I've won a few, lost a few there.

Gotta say the whole experience at the PGA Golf Club was awesome. Played the Wanamaker course in the afternoon with a young teaching pro from Pittsburgh - he's in Florida for a series of mini-tournaments the PGA is running this month. He had a tourney coming up today and wanted to get a prescribe round in.

Some final thoughts on the PGA Golf Club --

 

Had a chance to have lunch with Jimmy Terry, the club's GM.  He said the club was, as he put it, not quite where they wanted it when he came on board 4 years ago.  The club, and apparently the whole Port St. Lucie area, really suffered during the 2008 housing crisis and following recession. But they've been able to upgrade the clubhouse - which is really nice - and upgrade the courses. The Dye course has recently reopened after an overhaul (really, really firm greens!), and they've initiated major improvements to all three courses, service levels and the facilities.  

 

Jimmy said his club is an interesting choice for a buddy trip - so much so that he wants to get a dog for the course and name him "Buddy," and use him in ads.  If you want a get away for golf first and foremost - the PGA Golf Club is a solid choice - the courses are prime, the facility is nice and there are reasonably priced hotels nearby (it's not a "resort" per se - so there are no rooms or condos that are part of the facility). If you want nightlife and strip clubs, you'd be better off heading south - although Port St. Lucie is a little over an hour away from West Palm Beach.  I'd imagine the town picks up a little in February-March - as spring training takes over and lots of teams train in the area.
