I was playing golf at my club last weekend when one of my playing partners showed me a golf ball marked 'oversize'. The ball was a Top Flite I believe. Has anyone else come across such a ball and, may I ask - 'What is the point?'

Top-Flite made a ball about 20 years ago that was 1.72" rather than the usual 1.68. It was legal of course because it was the correct weight 1.62 ounches and a ball cannot be less than 1.68" in diameter.

Selling points were greater accuracy esp in wind and easier to putt with. It sold well for a while until people caught on it travelled a shorter distance.

But that was 20 years ago have they re-invented it??

That ball was called the Top Flite Magma it came along about the time the metal woods came out. I remember I got a 2 ball pack sample. I tried them with one of the first King Cobra metal drivers. In those days I had quick hands and hit a hook anyhow talk about a lethal rolling hook it makes me cringe to think about it.
