SeeMore Putter Review my prize package, what a cool gift

Posted 24 May 2012 - 07:57 PM
Well, as most people have already seen that I won member of the month. One of my prizes was a custom fit putter from SeeMore golf. I'll be honest I hadn't read up much about the company or knew anything about the company until I got on the phone with John Higgins to do my SPI fitting. I am not sure if it was lucky for them or a bit unlucky for them that they landed me one of the most annual people when it comes to my equipment and fittings. I had already sent them my putter style, posture, etc. Basically just all the stuff I already knew from working with Burnt Edges Consulting and Bruce in regards to putter fitting, natural posture, etc.
Lets see if I can recall some of the history that John told me about SeeMore putters, sorry john I can't recall all of the history just mostly our conversations about design and the fitting itself. I recall that the executives of Odyssey ended up selling Odyssey to Callaway then purchased SeeMore putters in 2006, not positive that is the correct year. Their mission was to bring a system to the average golfer that allows them to align the putter more easily and consistently. The brainchild of this idea became known as 'riflescope technology'.
Part 2 ~ The Fitting
It was a not so simple conversation that took place between John and I. I think we were on the phone for about an hour, I can talk someone's ear off when it comes to golf what was nice for a change is that I was coming into this product line blind. John was super polite and enthusiastic through the entire conversation and easy just easy to talk to. Not once did he make me feel stupid at any point in the conversation. He told me the history of SeeMore putters for about 10 minutes and the rest of the time we chatted about putters.
The first thing that John did was repeat all the data that I had sent previously in an e-mail about my putter fittings and working with Burnt Edges Consulting we chatted about importance of putting for about 10 minutes and he sounded supper excited to get the ball rolling on the fitting since I already had a lot of the work out of the way. My natural setup has my forehead through the ball eyes a hair inside the line he was excited to hear the fact I already had my eye line a hair inside the ball at address and said that is where they prefer the eyes to be in the setup for putting, I found that interesting personal as really there have been very successful putters that address the ball with eyes way inside the line, and eyes directly over the ball or even outside the line.
The next thing that we spent a lot of time talking about was my current set-up and putters. I told him what putters that I had currently what model in their line fit my eye the best, I said that I was open minded to try something different if he thought it would be a better fit. Though deep down I think i might have been pulling a little hard for the model that I got because John told me he could hear it in my heart that was the style of putter that I liked. If you know my bag and what putters I have from looking in my signature you can already guess the model that I ended up getting.
I told him that My Scotty Cameron Newport 2 was about 330grams and that I liked the feel of it at impact and it came off more dead then my current putter. I also told him that my YES! Callie-f was 355grams and would just come off way to hot at times for my liking, this even got into the materials that they were made from as John originally thought my Scotty was the 303 stainless, it is not a 303 it is much older then that it is a carbon Cameron. I have refinished it with Birchwood Casey Perma Gun Blue it looks great. That really got his interest I think I could hear him get a little more excited once he heard I liked the weight of the YES! Callie-f at 355 and that I preferred a weight of about 340 to 350 grams and the feel of a carbon putter better then stainless. He then told me how they can turn a blade putter into a belly putter by adding a metal rod in the putter to take it from 350grams all the way up to 380 grams I think.
In the end I got the DB4 blade putter that is guess what a Black Gunmetal CS finish, slightly darker then the DIY Scotty I refinished but it looks great, it is a perfect finish for what i like, I love the dark black / dark blue type finish on a putter. Here are the specs and what I had done that is custom to me that anyone can do in a standard fitting with SeeMore SPi fitters:
~ 33.75" in length
--> Perfect matched right up to my two other putters that are cut to 33.75"
~ 69* lie angle
--> Side note: the lie angle is perfect john, I won't need to go to 38* or anything flatter.
~ Red tour classic midsize grip
--> I will be changing this grip, read the first impressions as to why.
~ 350gram head
--> It fells fantastic just a shade lighter then the YES!, that is exactly what I wanted.
Part 3 ~ First Impressions
The putter got to my house yesterday, I felt like a little child on their birthday waiting to open their gifts the last hour I was at work. I didn't take lunch so that I could go home grab my golf gear and the putter, take some pictures then run out to the course for a fast 9 holes with the putter. I am a golf nut it was the highlight of my day when I got home and saw the package on the front door step. I hurried inside took one snap shot of the box, one snap shot of the putter in the plastic, one of the head still in the plastic then bagged it and headed to the course.
I have only played 9 holes with it and practiced putted a little. I want to note that the practice green was not punched but for some reason a week ago my course punched with little holes. The punched them little, big and now little again, that is three times in one season since March. Anyways, I can’t give a good results estimate because with a bumpy green it makes it hard to hole putts of any length. The punches are not so bad it effected the speed however only a slight change in line here and there. I noticed one thin that was consistent in my results distance control was spot on 1 to 2 feet past the hole every stroke when missed. The feel of the weight of the head is great at 350 grams and I love the carbon feel over the stainless, carbon wont last as long unless you treat it most of the time but that is okay. I know I gave my Scotty Cameron a Baby Oil rub down daily when I first refinished it Gun Blue. Now it is more like once a month, as it doesn’t see the light of day anymore. Might have to talk to SeeMore to see how long the carbon will last and if I need to treat with a oil rag or baby oil type lubricant to keep it from oxidizing and looking the way it does now.
One thing that I noticed first thing is that the face is a smooth mill, it is not like a Scotty or YES that have deep grooves milled into the face, it is smooth as smooth gets. I also noticed it has a completely different sound at impact to it then anything that I have used previously. My carbon Scotty sounded muffled and dead and felt the same, the YES felt supper hot and sounded like a little louder click but not real load. The SeeMore DB-4 has a silly load click to it using the TM Penta TP. Not so load that it is going to make me jump but definitely a good ‘click’ sound. Still feels soft which is the weirdest part about the whole putter, load click but soft muffled feeling pure impact. Different but sometimes different is a great thing, I felt really good over the ball that my distance was going to be perfect I just had to worry about the line.
Well overall so far I found out that I do something in my swing that I have built in a mechanism to counter it, I have a slight forward press, this obviously shuts down the toe a little, I have always installed grips to be about 1 – 2* open so that when I press 1 – to 2* it squares the face at address. I missed a lot of putts that felt good left, assuming the grip in on square, my little forward press did the trick in bringing the line of the roll to the left not so good for my line, it looked like I pulled a lot of putts when in reality I think it is just from that slight shut face from the forward press. That is easily fixed with a grip change. I was thinking about making the change as I am not a fan of the grip that I selected that came stock, plus it was placed on the putter square, so this is just not working form feel at all and I can tell that much after 9 holes, I’ll try it one more time today keeping this in mind but for the weekend I might just try a purely round grip.
The head cover that came with the putter is like glue right now, you have to put some back into it to un-velcro that sucker to get the putter out, I'm sure over time it will get dirt and dust and stuff in it losing the attachment but right now wow they built that to not come off in a hurricane. I must say one of the more impressive head cover designs that I have dealt with. The magnetite ones just suck they stick to everything and fall off easy. This one looks like it is built to last I'm not joking either.

Okay Spies I have gotten a few rounds under the belt, two 9 holes rounds on bumpy punched greens at my home course an 45 holes over the weekend 27 on Friday and then 18 yesterday. I had cut off my Tour Classic red Midsize that came from SeeMore on Thursday night, as I didn't like the tapper rate from top to bottom wasn't my kind of putter grip at all. Burnt Edges consulting gave a suggestion that I try a round grip on the putter so I said what the heck why not. I ended up doing 3 wraps under my right hand as build up then two more full wraps of build up, one full wrap of doubled sided then a standard Star Tour Wrap (0.590 core) on there and away I went.
I must say putting a round grip on a putter has to be the most telling thing in a putting stroke that I have ever experienced. The head worked well when I actually putt a great stroke on the putt, I learned that I tend to roll the wrists and shut the face a lot missing the putt left sometimes 'steer' it a little and miss one or two to the right. I putted like crap I won't lie but I think that wasn't due to the head it was do to the person operating the head and the no kind of grip. It felt great I made some great strokes and they dropped in the center of the cup. Had a ton of lip outs and Bruce seems to think it was from minor steering. I would probably have to agree a little of that and the fact the cups hadn't been changes, I want to give the round grip more time and the putter a little more time before I draw my final conclusions. However, as of right now it is my gamer. I love the weight of the head, I like the feel at impact and I like the sound when the putt is hit purely, it just works extremely well when you actually make a great stroke, i knew a good stroke from a bad stroke pretty easily and a good strike from a bad strike as well.
I want to make a comment that I did notice with the riflescope technology, it doesn't allow for any major forward press, you can get away with a baby one but it seems to look the best when you don't have a forward press at all. it will show you if you got some kind of weird twist in the head as well at address so over all on the DB4 it is not as beneficial is it probably would be in the mSeires putters or a different line. The center shafted putters they offer also have a bigger riflescope marking on them then the DB-4 it is pretty small. I honestly didn't really even notice the marking on the db-4 but anytime that I did look at them to verify something both lines were viable and no red was being shown. I think that over all for someone that has never done putting lessons or fittings this technology would most likely be extremely beneficial. I'll add more to this again later just wanted to add a first few words in regards to my rounds and the SeeMore DB-4. Great putter i need to get better using it basically.
UPDATE: I played the putter for a very long time with a round grip on it, this is a great training aid, and honestly think I'm going to make one of my other two putters have a round grip on it gust for shear practice reasons, it forces you to make a good stroke without manipulation of the hands in my case I was flipping the putter head closed with the round grip so had to work on inside to hold off through the stroke on the round grip. I recently went back to a flat sided Iomic Midsize grip on this putter and wow made a huge difference, I started rolling the ball extremely well. I had 9 holes where I felt that I couldn't miss, if I did miss it was a 90* or 180* lip out bulls*** type of result. I most say this putter has become my gamer permanently great replacement for me and perfect weight and type of steel that I like, best prize that I could have possibly won.
Part 5 ~ My Score (in typical MGS fashion have to give a score for the putter)
9.9 out of 10
I give this putter very high ratings, I am a bit bias my experience with the staff and playing the putter for a period of time now has made me grown to love the putter. Remember I played a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 that was old Carbon steel before the 303 stuff out now. Loved the feel of the putter it was just too light for me. I played the YES! Callie-f which is 204 355g it came off way too hot for my liking, so the DB-4 being 350g and Carbon steel meet in the middle and turned out to be money.
Thank you SeeMore and everyone for reading my review

I most say that working with Bruce and Burnt Edges consulting understanding my putting stroke and using the DB-4 red dot to sort of double check my set up positions it is making putting seem very simple at times when my speed is correct.

I got to play with a guy with cerebral palsy yesterday and made his day... He hits from the forward tees, and was making fun of me after I had a TERRIBLE tee shot and even worse second, and he still had to wait for me to hit...
