My burglar alarm went off last night at around 1:00. Pretty scary moment. It's plugged into the police department but there still is a lag between when ever has just tripped it is there and the police come. My clubs are just about right next to my bed so I grabbed my 58 (bent to 59)with lots of bounce and my trustee Golden Retriever. Off we went only to find my son who had dropped by the house to pick up his clubs on his way home from work (he works at a restaurant.) My tip off that things were fine was the dog who didn't seem the least bit concerned. Matt was fortunate that he didn't get a lob wedge planted in his skull and he had some serious explaining to do when the cops arrived a few minutes latter.

What club would you use for self defense? I think I made the right choice. The driver is too expensive and I couldn't hurt anything with my 3 or 5 wood. I think it had to be the lob wedge or the sand wedge.

My personal choice is the 9 iron. Heavy enough to do damage, but not irreplaceable, like my wedge. So I could make do for a few months while it sits in the evidence locker.

1 iron. Long but still has a steel shaft that could be used as a sword/stabbing device if broken and at a distance. Lol.

Course if it's my bag right after playing a few local courses, I'm grabbing the .38 that's in the side pocket (for snakes). It has 2 snake shot and the rest hollow points.
In The Bag:
Driver: TaylorMade Superfast 2.0 version 2 LCG w/ Grafalloy BiMatrix Tour Proto X-flex
3+ wood: 13* Nike SQ w/ Aldila NV 85X tipped to spec
5 wood: 18* Nike SQ2 Monorail w/ Talamonti PD80 Tour X tipped to spec
4 Hybrid: 4/21 TaylorMade Rescue11 set to neutral w/ Talamonti H100 X tipped to spec
5-PW Adams A4 Tour Black w/ Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 hardstepped once, bent to trad. lofts
GW: 51 degree Ping Eye2 BeCu w/ TiSandvick Titanium Stepless X flex
SW: 56 degree Scratch Tour Dept 1018 w/ Dynamic Gold Spinner (CC grooves)
LW: 60 degree Scratch Tour Dept. 1018 w/ Dynamic Gold Spinner (CC grooves)
XW: 64 degree Callaway V-Forged Vintage w/ Dynamic Gold X100 Tiger Stepped (CC grooves off tour van)
Putter: Right now? Scotty Cameron Newport Beach 2 Prototype Centershaft 33.75" w/ Super Stroke USA Ryder Cup Slim

Have a ton of back-up putters and always play with 14 clubs, above are what's in the rotation. And yes, I'm a club *****.

1 iron, are you kidding. With no warm up swing and range time, you would be lucky not to hit two feet behind the intruder. Or even worse, a complete wiff. Besides, this is a case of accuracy over distance.

I think a sand wedge is the right choice. The shorter shaft allows for a shorter backswing in case you run into them in the hall. You can take a 3/4 back swing and still get a good solid lick in with the proper weight transfer. Plus, even with Florida's Imminent Danger Law they are likely to confiscate whatever club you use anyway and at least this way you can have the rest of your set to play.

Now I said sand wedge, and I picked that one because they typically have more bounce.and the heads are a little heavier. You can open it up and really use the bounce and keep from taking too deep of a divot.

Just remember, open the face up a little, set the wrist early, 3/4 back swing, good weight tranfer and release club through the hitting zone and really use the bounce.

Doesn't matter what club it is, as long as its forged -- you can't underestimate the benefits of "feel" here. Oh, and make it a blade. If you can't hit someone with a blade, you need more practice...

Naw, that makes it too difficult when you get to court, when you say, well, I felt like I caught the first one a little thin, and while he was down I thought I would get in some more practice.

Besides if you get someone on the jury who is a high handicapper, you do not want it held against you because they can not hit a blade.

I knew this would provoke some interesting discussion. Note to self don't piss Rookie off if ever we finally get to play!!!!!!

Actually the most important piece of equipment in this case was my caddie - she's very gentle but I'm guessing had this been something serious she would have gotten down and dirty pretty quickly. Love that Dog!!!!!!

1 iron - do you really have one of those things? I still have a two iron - gets used whenever I'm cooking on the smoker.

Don't worry about pissing Rookie off. He is coming at you with a 1 iron. Unless you stand real steal and give him a perfect lie you will probably be ok.

You're right RR - better to use an SGI Iron. Beside, if you do strike it solid, you may need the "shovel" capabilities to hide the evidence...

Haha  you guys crack me up. In all seriousness, I would use my 62* Copper Wedge. Its my best club, the club I am most confident with, and I feel like the rust on the face can really do some damage.

The driver is a good choice due to the long arm which translates into more speed which equals a bigger striking force (F=ma and due to the at least 44in arm where torque=dw), and you would never be in the burglar's reach!

I think some of you are taking the wrong approach here. Driver 12ish times around. Putter apparently 33 times a round wedges a few times a round... Etc. 4 iron once or twice a round. It would be my assumption that after applying a solid slice thru your intruder your going to be awake for awhile. First dealing with the shock and the cops, and whatever else has to go on. Anyway you look at it sleep is going to be slim, so you are going to be awake for the first tee time at your local course. Now what would truly ruin your day? For me having a 90 yard shot and not having the right club 10 times. Lets get our priorities straight, 30 footers down hill are murder.
