fozcycle
Situation: This past weekend one of the guys(Bob)in my foursome was deep in the rough about 5 yards off the green on the Par 5 8th......When he attempted to chip the ball onto the green, He missed and his wedge stuck in the soft muddy ground about 4 inches behind the ball. We had a couple inched of rain the night before. Fact: He never touched the ball. His wedge dug into the rough behind the ball. Fact: The ball never moved. Fact: He addressed the ball and his intention was to hit it onto the green. He re-addressed the ball, chipped it onto the green and made the putt. He scored it as a Par, but was told it was actually a Bogey as he must include 1 stroke for the whiff. Thus, in our matchplay game, he tied the hole as the rest of us also had bogeys. In stoke play he was told to a score a bogey which put him one point from tying for first Place. First paid $80 and Second paid $60, so the "whiff" cost him $10 as we split the payout for 1st & 2nd when they tie. It also cost him $1.50 in our foursome game as he would have won the hole. I have looked through The Rules of Golf and the only reference I can find is in the Definition of the term "Stroke"...." "A stroke is the forward movement of the club made with the intention of striking at and moving the ball, but if a player checks his downswing voluntarily before the clubhead reaches the ball he has not made a stroke." So I guess we were correct in the assertion that the "stroke" is not hitting the ball but the forward movement of the clubhead intending to hit the ball and thus he must count that as a stroke. SPY VIP Tony Covey MGS Posted October 8, 2012 SPY VIP Share Posted October 8, 2012 Ha! I whiffed on waste high wedge shot (buried in deep rough) just this weekend. As I explained last time around. It's all about intent. This is one of the easier rules. If your buddy intended to hit the ball, then it's a stroke. There are no do-overs rewarded on the basis of absolute futility and failure. fozcycle
I told him at the time it occurred that it was all based on his intent to strike the ball. Don't you just love it when you are actually correct about a ruling? JBones
I had an argument with a guy in league a few years ago about intent. Basically the same situation as here and he refused to believe that you didn't have to make contact with the ball for it to count as a stroke. On the next box, I knocked my ball off the tee during setup and he tried giving me a stroke. This same guy was also notorious for giving himself anything inside of 2' on the greens.
