Golf Fitness Tips

Hopefully the season keeps alive for a while here, but as soon as it ends, probably sometime in December for me once the first snows hit, I want to focus on fitness. Does anyone have some good home workouts they like or can post their routines? I can find a bunch online, but I never know if these are actually good or not.

 

I'm also thinking of setting up a home gym since I can get an old Bowflex for really cheap off craigslist along with free weights and kettle balls. Already have an elliptical and stability ball.

One word - ISOMETRICS - increases stamina, strength, fast twitch muscles. Isolates specific muscles and you can do it anywhere with resistance bands. Is also low impact.

Any specific exercises? I'm really down for anything. I typically run 3x a week and want to do some sort of strength/flexibility training on other days.

I started using isometrics to increase my fast twitch muscles when I was competing in martial arts to increase my speed and since then I have used it for every sport I have competed in.

 

As far as specific exercises goes, to start with I would do this:-

 

1. Take whatever stretching you currently do, add resistance in both directions;

2. Add specific golf movements to your routine and add resistance against your downswing;

3. Replicate weight exercises like curls or flys with the bands.

 

The trick with isometrics is to take up the resistance in a slow controlled movement and then hold for as long as you can and then repeat. As you get stronger and conditioned to the movement, increase the bands and increase the movement.

 

You can also isolate specific muscles by altering the angles that you apply the resistance. I find this much more effective than weights.

 

Isometrics will not increase muscle mass but will instead create leaner muscle fibres and when used correctly will exercise the muscle through the whole range of movement.

 

Another great work out is a speed ball (boxing) for hand eye co-ordination and a kick bag.

WD: The full review is coming, but I'm currently in love with the Rip Trainer from TRX. I have a lot of gym equipment in my house (mainly weight stuff), but this has been a game changer for me (not in terms of my golf game or fitness results, it's just a very different workout and a lot of fun). I don't want to give away the whole review here, but it's something worth looking at.

I recently downloaded it on the iPhone, and while I haven't used it extensively, I have used the stretching and core sections, and they are pretty decent. The app also has some yoga workouts that you can do. While the stretching routines I did, wasn't spectacular, it was good enough for now, I felt.

 

I'm looking at giving these a shot some time in the near future. Although I'm pretty sure the wife will be falling off her chair laughing at my 'Downward Dog' attempts!

I was going to look for exactly this type of app to randomize workouts. I grabbed the pro version and will give it a shot sometime.

I made great progress when I started working on my balance, developing a solid swing platform for my swing. The goal was to be able to apply the greatest swing speed at and through the ball. To be able to do that I needed a good swing platform which could only be done with balance. During those long winter months, find a little bit of swing space and work on the swing motion, finding and eliminating those points wherein your body has to fight the opposing forces so that you can complete the swing in a seemingly effortless manner. When you have managed this, master it, after which you begin working on finding ways you can swing faster without losing balance. The swing is not effortless but if you manage to do it right, it looks effortless to the uninitiated.

i got a TRX body weight suspension trainer.  it's basically two adjustable suspension straps that you anchor to the a door, a tree, whatever.  pretty cool b/c its transportable and you can use it pretty much anywhere.  expensive to buy the real thing, but look on youtube and you can find videos that show you how to DIY with stuff from home depot for like $20.  either way, the variety of workouts you can do is amazing.  my favorite workout toy for sure.
