Iron re-shafting dilemma

Recommended Posts

Need some advice on re-shafting my backup set. They take .370 parallel tip shafts, but I would love to keep costs down so I'm looking for a set of pulls. Unfortunately hardly anything takes a .370 tip anymore so finding x100 (or similar) pulls in .370 is not going well.

My ideal shaft would be C-Tapers in .370, but I just can't rationalize spending $250 on shafts when the entire 1i-gw set of heads costs me $90. I'll most likely only re-shaft the 4i-pw to keep costs down.

Here's the question. Can I shim .355 taper tip into a .370 head? Is it worth saving $50-$60 to go that route, or would it be better to just have the .370 tip?

Yeah, I figured if I went C-Taper again I'd have to buy them new.

Found these on ebay though, seems like a good deal, but not really familiar with DG Lite.

$65 for a whole set seems like a pretty decent price though.

Shimming is no problem. Prep the shims inside and out with sandpaper. I also usually buy the ones with 8 tongues on them. I alternately cut off every other one and leave 4 in a cross pattern. This gives more for the epoxy to adhere to. Never had one issue doing this.

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

X2

I like to apply epoxy to the shaft before putting the shim on, as well as putting some inside the hosel.......mostly just to make sure epoxy covers everything.

You do realize you are talking about 0.015 or a shim that is 0.0075 thick. I just take some of the glass beads and mix with the epoxy and use the ferrule to make sure the shaft is centered. Shims are fine for .335 to .370 but for the other, glass beads work fine. I am putting a set of KBS Tours in some Hogans this weekend and will do that.

Can you even get a 0.355 to 0.370 shim?

Yes, but you have to cut off the fingers about halfway up. All you are really doing is centering the tip. I didn't read the numbers before commenting.

Thanks for all the help guys, this helped a lot.

Now I might have to spring for a swingweight scale so I can actually build these to my specs.

Now I might have to spring for a swingweight scale so I can actually build these to my specs.

If you want to get a fairly close estimate on SW, try these links:

http://www.golf-components.com/swing-weight-calculator.html

You enter Head Weight (grams), Club Length (inches), Shaft Weight (grams), Grip Weight (grams), Raw Shaft Length (inches) and it comes up with a SW estimate.

If you want to get a first decimal place SW calculation, you can use MyOstrich's Excel spreadsheet. The MyostrichGolf site isn't functional right now, but here's a link to the spreadsheet itself.

http://www.shaftprofiles.com/users/thewitt/swing.xls

From the ReadMe sheet: "The basic forumula for swingweight in this spreadsheet came from Dave Tutelman ... It is only an approximation of swingweight, and comes with many caveats."

The two methods probably use the same formula.

Oh, and here's a good link for some plans for building your own swingweight scale.

http://www.freegolfinfo.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=547756

And a much simpler scale (I used to have a more extensive chart for measurements vs swingweight but I can't find it now).

Great links and info. I've looked at those (or similar) before and used it for rough estimates. However now that I've got my exact specs I want to be precise. Plus I don't have a digital scale laying around and that would probably cost about the same as a cheap swingweight scale. Golfworks has a basic model for $50 that should suit the amount of work I'll be doing.

I'll tell you something else that works well if you don't want to order shims and have it lying around: fiberglass drywall tape.
