Club Length for irons

Recommended Posts

So i've been wondering about what length to have my irons at. I've been looking into the True Length Technology, having them built to a MOI set or just going the traditional 1/2 difference per club. Has anyone else experimented with different lengths in their irons?

Welcome! Good topic! I've felt for me that half inch progression makes the pw shorter than is ideal. I've thought getting shorter by a centimeter at a time instead of half an inch would be good for me. I wouldn't just do it without getting the weight right in the process though. I haven't looked into the True Length Technology you referred to. That sounds interesting. Maybe someone here has experience with it.

Here is a link to the true length technology i referred to http://www.danscustomgolfshop.com/truelengthtechnology.html. It sounds like an interesting concept

Go with whatever feels the most comfortable.

Personally, I'm finding I like a consistent swing weight....otherwise during the backswing I think "huh....this feels funny" and the results are rarely good

I went with longer than standard on set of shafts I had before this, thinking that I might get more distance, but no real results to prove it. This last set of shafts and clubs are the standard length. Because the change in the weather it is difficult to tell it this set is actually shorter than the other set. However, before I reshafted these I asked myself what the most important thing about these irons were, the ability to hit the 6 iron 167 yards instead of 163 yards, or hitting the 6 iron straighter and finding the green. Therefore, I made this set of irons standard length.

With the weather change I am much shorter, but would have been anyway. I am also hitting a lot of greens so I am happy with my change and current set up.

I ended up .5" over standard for most sets. Which equals a 38.5" 5 iron with .5" gaps down to PW and then .25" gaps down to 60°.

This was based off a fitting I had done to give me the best smash factor with each club. I'm only 5'9", so I was surprised that slightly longer gave me better results.

I am not trying to single you out here or make an attack, You just happened to make a comment that bugs me a ton. I hear it all time when talking about length, "Standard". Please someone define what the set "standard" in club building or golf in general because I sure don't know of one. What you are saying is that you are a 1/2 over "New Modern Standards" with a 39.50" 3i length from what I gathered.

"Old Modern Standard" would be clear for a 38.75" 3i

"New Modern Standard" would be clear for a 39.00" 3i

"OEM Standard" would depend on the model of the irons could be anything from 39.00 to 39.75" 3i anymore.

Anyways sorry for the detailed correction just really bugs me to hear "standard" because I have no clue what you are talking about unless you provide the length of a club like you did.

Back on topic to the OP:

I personally am 5'11" and play "Old Modern Standard" where my 3i sits at 38.75" with 1/2" steps down to the PW at 35.25" I happen to play the PW, GW, SW, LW all at 35.25" no steps at all, which is different from conventional off the self lengths (wedges normally comes with 0.25" steps)

really length is up to you what you are confident playing with. You just need to match the lie angle to the length and your swing to make it work properly.

I go 1/2" deviations down to the 9 iron then 1/4" deviation from it to the PW. GW same as PW, then 35.5" on all of my other wedges. Mine are based off of a 38 3/8" raw length on a 5 iron (raw meaning not gripped).

LW: 60* Scratch Tour Department (CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold Spinner
XW: 64* Cally XForged Vintage w/ DG X100 8 iron tiger stepped
Putter: Nike Method Prototype 006 at 34"

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.

Very good point, standard was the wrong word to use. Growing up with a certain loft and length has definitely given me a bias towards what I think of as "standard". In my head I'll always think of a 3i as 39" and 21° :)

I hear that, 21* loft on a 3i would be my "standard" as well, length i also see it more as a 39.00" as that's what has been most common recently in players irons, but I like the old school lengths more, I had a set of MP-60s with the "old modern standard" that I got used to and never really liked the 39" length. Anyways, I do know that at a 39.00" 3iron my clubs lie angles were more flat then they are at 38.75", so it's something to think about.
