Home made loft measuring?

Recommended Posts

How can I measure lofts at home?

How do I know my club is sitting as it should before I use a protractor? My phone has a cool protractor app that I can place on the face and get a reading, but I'm never sure if the club is sitting correctly. The slightest change in shaft lean changes the reading.

thanks

The only way for that to "sorta" work, is find a way to clamp the shaft perfectly vertical while perpendicular to the leading edge, AND make sure the grooves are level to the ground at the same time. In other words, the shaft will be laying back on its proper lie angle with the grooves level if you look at it face on, but the shaft will be vertical if looking down the leading edge. Then your protractor idea will work to the extent of its precision as long as it's sitting against the face perpendicular to the grooves and the face in both directions. I wouldn't trust it for anything beyond curiosity though. I bet it would be tough to get it to say the same thing twice if you went through the process of setting up the club from scratch again. But who knows, you might come up with a good setup that's repeatable.

So is loft based off the grooves being perpendicular, but what if you have upright lie angles... Nevermind I see the flaw in that as I write. It's the shaft that changes relative to the ground when adjusting lie angle, not the grooves?

I'm trying to wrap my head around how to build one with clamps and short levels.

All this work and it's easier to just take them into a proshop.
