    Happy thread

I'm not only happy, I'm pumped like a beagle hound in a rabbit den about my son graduating Infantry school at Fort Benning, Ga. I have been supporting a military group forum helping families who are not familiar with the terms used in the Army. It's greek to most of them and I'm fortunate through my experience, to be able to help them through this journey supporting their soldiers. I recently experienced one of the most amazing and heart tugging experiences I have ever been blessed with. I joined four other fathers who fought in foreign wars as we were given the opportunity to pin the blue Infantry Cord on our sons! Our sons were called up front and center for this special once in a lifetime opportunity. I get chill bumps thinking about it! In the last pic, my wife caught me in a moment of emotion as I was walking back to the grandstand.

  3. And you thought forum testing season was over huh? Well, you should know at My Golf Spy, testing never sleeps. Whether it’s the Most Wanted Testing, Forum Testing or just plain unofficial forum members doing their own testing, we are always anxious to hear about something new on the market. So the good folks at Callaway reached with a set of 2019 Big Bertha irons to be reviewed. So as we did earlier this year, we put our heads together and came up with who we feel will be a fine selection to put these to the test. And we came up with the perfect Spy in our opinon, please join Dawg Daddy as he shares his thoughts on these irons over the next 4 weeks or so. Normally this is where we would write a bit of a promo piece about the irons while the selection process is going on. But since Dawg Daddy has had these in hand for a short time, we don’t want to spoil any of his Stage 1 impressions on looks and initial thoughts. As we did during some of the later season reviews, Dawg Daddy is ready and able to answer any questions you throw at him along the way, he doesn’t have to save anything for Stage 2. These are expected to be one of the biggest selling irons on the market next year and will definitely get a lot of attention, so fire away with any questions you might have for him.

  5. Week 12 Update At Calypso and MPR I know Christmas is crazy for us Pastor types but Calypso will appreciate that I'm the Sole Pastor of a Church that is close to the size of Trinity Sheboygan right now, smaller parish but way larger school with tons of stuff going on. We're also down a youth worker so where we would normally have three full time church workers, it's me and some occasional help from a retired guy from our circuit, others have stepped up big time to help me out but I am fried. I didn't even realize what week number it was for this update!!! At any rate here are the numbers: Green RH 109 LH 109 Blue RH 106 LH 102 Red RH 102 LH 97 I ended up only able to do two workouts this week. I thought that I may have been able to sneak a third one in midweek but was still sick and the weather outside was indeed frightful - Thursday and Yesterday were like going through a tropical storm with wind gusts over 50 and 5 plus inches of rain. Today was epic in that I had my best morning workout ever and set or tied records across the board left handed. 109? It was accurate too because I hit 107 on another swing and 96 LH kneeling. Even though I didn't have a huge top number I was very fast today across the board with everything. @Calypso - the purpose of the SuperSpeed training is to train our brains to swing faster. It's possible that there is something in our swings that slow us down beyond the obvious God given athletic gifts that we possess (or lack there of.) I would say that it is not at all cheating to try different things, like a grip change, to increase speed. To be honest I will do just that on the course on occasion - I know that I have 10 extra yards in the bag by switching to a baseball or 10 finger grip - there are holes out there were I will do just that - I'm not as consistent but making that move on 18 at my home course makes sense - its a 420 yard par 4 - at the outer reaches of what I can do in regulation so I'm not hurting anything if I duck hook it (that's the miss that I bring into play by making that switch) - I just lay up and play for 5. More importantly though I think that SuperSpeed teaches us how to use the ground to create speed in our swings. What I've found is that the real "cheat" in the grip is to grip it as lightly as possible - that's what unleashes speed - it's like a baseball pitcher - when he's throwing a fastball the arm will just follow the body - if we wants to take something off the fastball he grips the ball tighter - he can make the exact same motion with the same arms speed and angle but the pitch looses velocity - that's the principal at play here! IMO at least.

  6. Week 12 is officially in the books. My numbers were close to or better than previous weeks, so I'd call it a pretty good week. It was highlighted by my fastest swing to date with my heaviest club, regular swing, at 106. I did have 107 as my highest for the week, but I'm really proud of that one. I'm still struggling to top 114 as my all time high, but I'm hoping since winter shutdown started today I'll see faster swings. The answer your question@Calypso55, I just try to keep it consistent. I will tweak stuff here and there to see what yields better results, but nothing extreme. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I'm probably the worst golfer here and I don't want to mess with what I do right. At least anything to do with SuperSpeed can't make my putting worse. MPR, enjoy your week off from training and I hope your hand gets to feeling better. Mike, keep up the good work and please keep us up to date on how it's going. I'm hoping that I can get out and hit some balls while I'm off. Tennessee weather is crazy and it's turning my world into a swamp. Sent from my SM-G955U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  7. To say I was surprised a few weeks ago to be asked if I would be willing to test the as yet unreleased Callaway Big Bertha 19 Irons is an understatement. Shocked is more like it! Wow! As I weighed if my body would be able to give enough on course time because of my back surgery and if my game was still strong enough to give a credible and unbiased review I checked out what Callaway Golf had to say online. This sentence is what jumped out at me. “The new Big Bertha has transformed the super game-improvement iron category. It’s our easiest to launch distance iron, and it’s led by our groundbreaking Suspended Energy Core.“ Being as I have moved from a 6.2 handicap before the surgery to roughly a 12 now and have lost 15 to 20 yards with my irons I thought, “man, I am the target golfer for this new iron! Let's go!” I posted this about myself in a previous review and decided to post it here too with updated. “My biggest golfing feats are 2 HIOs at the same course but on different par 3s, and 5 years ago at my company golf tournament my partner (he is quite a golfer) and I won in a field of about 200 golfers. It is a best ball format, my partner tied for low score, I helped him 11 strokes over the 3 days for us to easily win the Championship by 4 strokes, I was very proud to had been able to help that much. My one other feat is in my weekly blitz 4 years ago I caught on fire on the back nine and posted a 30 (after an opening front of 41 with a penalty stroke). That 30 felt much better than either HIO, and I was with 3 of my regular golfing buddies that I also travel with so it was extremely sweet. I have been much luckier than I have ever been good but like all reading this, I love this silly game. My current bag make up is listed below, I use quite a few Callaway products but as you can see I am currently playing the TaylorMade M1 irons, I have been a TaylorMade iron user for about 6 or 7 years through at least my last 3 iron sets as they have been excellent performers for me. Before surgery my 150 yard club was the 6I or 7I depending on pin location on the green, now it is the 5I always. I have a medium-high ball flight and my usual miss is left as I normally hit a draw and I would say my swing tempo is medium. As with most higher handicap golfers my main weakness is my long irons and my strength is my short game. I don't usually even carry a 4I any more and favor the 4H but I will be testing the 4I with this set to see how it compares. I am a 71 year old retiree, a husband, father, grandfather and a great grandfather. I live in central Georgia and am blessed to be able to play golf year round, There are usually at least a couple of days per week that I can get out on the course even in the dead of winter. I love golf, it is a challenge to me but I also enjoy the fellowship and seeing other players enjoying themselves. I played some when I was younger, around the ages of 25 to 35 but it was mostly an excuse to get together with my buddies and have a good time, golf itself was secondary to having a fun day. I actually got back into golf at the age of 50 and I decided to get serious about improving this go round so I sought out anything I could to improve including lessons. I was able to take my scores from 95/115 to 85 in a fairly short order. I steadily improved over the years until I would fluctuate between a 6 to a 9 handicap, then the back went out! I have degenerative arthritis in my lower two vertebrae and had a double lumbar fusion to repair it, needless to say it has restricted some of my movement. The irons I received are 4I thru PW, 2° upright with regular flex UST Mamiya Recoil ZT9 graphite shafts, with a Lamkin 51 gram Z5 Genesis CHEV Red Cap grips. They have a smoked PVD finish and are actually quite stunning to see for the first time. I have several unboxing photos to share. Having come from the TaylorMade M1 irons I had truly thought the Big Bertha 19's would be a much larger iron as they advertise as Super Game-improvement irons. I did not find that to be the case, I was actually quite shocked to see how they are almost equal in size. I have several comparative photos below. Callaway has many nice and innovative claims in their video on their website The Suspended Energy Core seems to me to be a new way to get the mass lower in the head with I certainly believe would lead to a higher launch, I have been noticing higher flight, especially on the 8, 9 and PW so I am thinking this is a nice enhancement. I really can say I understand what the urethane microspheres are about but if they add to the higher launch so be it. I do know that the 360 Cup Face technology is something that Callaway believes in and it is supposed to deliver maximum allowable distance along with less loss of distance on off center strikes. I hope the PVD finish holds up as in my past experience with a Set of Cleveland irons the smoked finish did not hold up well at all, we will see how this goes. Here is a close up of the face and finish and also a pic of my first strike with the irons. It was the 8I and as you can see it was pretty much dead center. This set of irons is shorter than my previous set and I will be extending them before any more testing which will also mean I will be installing the grip that I usually use. I am hoping that my accuracy improves somewhat as so far I am not as accurate as usual. So far in testing I am seeing pretty much the same distances as I was getting with my TM irons but the accuracy is not as good. I really like the feel and sound of these irons and they do look very good at address my only thing right now is I am not a fan of this much offset but that possibly will be alright as I become more used to playing these irons. I plan to do a head to head with the M1 irons and possibly get together with my buddy ole gray to compare them with his Cleveland Launcher HBs I wish to thank MGS and Callaway Golf for this awesome testing opportunity and promise to give it my best shot. I will be happy to answer any questions that you have so fire away!

I enjoy the “small” nature here. People post quality stuff, in-general, and I feel like there is a good group of “friends”. Yeah, as soon as the first testing opportunity hits following the PGA Show, we’ll see “New guy/girl from ______.” They’ll probably stay around long enough to see if they’ve been chosen, then move along until the next opportunity. It’s ok. No big deal. Some of us got here that way and ended-up staying, and being great contributors. If one wants BIG, WRX is still out there!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  9. I think this is a good thing. I have been going through a swing change since April anyway; not necessarily for speed, but it has helped. After starting the SS training, I have noticed that when I make a swing like my new swing, I have more speed than when I make a swing with my old swing. I can actually feel the difference with the SS sticks, and the radar reflects that. I know I can do more, so I do use the training to find out what works and what doesn't. @Calypso55 I'm not sure what you mean by "fudge a little bit to cheat the system". I will do whatever I can to get more speed. If a grip change makes a difference, I will do it. I don't think it's cheating; it's just finding what works to give more speed. Doesn't matter how you get it; what will matter is whether or not it's something that can be controlled on the course.

Yeah, I created an account at WRX a while back, but ended up hating it. It was way too BIG for what I wanted. I like the "small" nature here. It feels more like I'm talking to a person, than some random person posting garbage on the internet. I couldn't stand how I wasn't able to read all of the content on WRX and most of it was just arguing anyway. Also, @Edveed, its winter for most of us northerners, so there is less golf to talk. I'm sure content will pick up some in the summer.

  12. End of week 8 here for me. Brief summary, because I want to go home. Averages on almost every weight have stayed with a 4mph range for the past four weeks. Green: 117–120 Blue: 113–116 Red: 106–112 Green (final): 123–126 I adjusted my spreadsheet to track the max speed swing with each color, like the rest of you are doing. There's obviously much more volatility in that measurement. For me, my initial green swings were down quite a bit this week, but everything else held steady. Looking forward to taking a week off, enjoying a lot of time with my family, and getting back with a rested body (and hand) after a break.

  14. Well it's now been over 2 years and the ER2 is still firmly in the bag. Prior to the ER2 I was switching putters all of the time, mainly because I never had one that really differentiated itself. That all changed with the ER2 and it has been in my bag for 2 straight years and is not going anywhere anytime soon.

There are other forums that post in my opinion lots of random junk causing it to appear like there is lots of "golf" talk. I personally like this smaller community, lots of good people that love the game and have good thoughts, ideas, and information to share. During the summer people come out of the woodwork for testing opportunities that many of those short term members consider giveaways.

  18. ... Nifty there is nothing unique about the Patriots in the Brady/Belichick Era. In fact I could make the argument they were less unique than many teams during that time frame. They just did what they did better, and more consistently than most everyone else. But letting Garoppolo go to SF was a huge mistake because franchise QB's are extremely difficult to find. Some teams have been very lucky with GB and the Pats at the top of that list going from Favre to Rodgers and Bledsoe to Brady. While the Browns and Bears went through a small city of bad QB's. It is gonna be very interesting to see who replaces Brady and Rodgers.

  19. Yup. I'm definitely behind on the Stage 2. I lagged on purpose to ensure I didn't take attention away from the members posting theirs but now I'm a little further than that. In case you can't tell, I've been busy with forum stuff lately. In addition, my day job has really picked up as well so it's been a busy time haha. In the meantime, here's another update: The i500s feel good but clearly don't feel as good as forged up and down the set. They have a clicky clacky sound in bag chatter but have a satisfying SMACK when hitting the ball. The smack is especially pronounced when you've got trees near to reflect the sound. It's loud in a thunderous type of way but not offensive at all. The subjective parts of the irons certainly don't affect me on course. They fit me well because I need less workability with my swing speed. It's easy to get it turning too far both ways. One thing I love about them is I'll never lose the ball left, right yes but never left so I can play a one way miss and that's resulting in more greens hit. Another thing I like about the i500s is it's much easier to hit partial shots. I really struggled making solid contact on anything less than full with my old irons. There's a chance, though, that that falls more on the better fit shaft than it does the heads. The forgiveness is definitely there though because the distances are still good even on off-center contact. During these wet and sloshy rounds of late, I've been trying to pick the ball instead of digging in and have been hitting more balls thin than normal. Of course I'm losing height, but the distance and stopping power is still spot on. I don't know if I should feel good or bad about knocking one stiff with a skulled shot but I'll take that birdie chance either way. One fun thing about these irons is I'm starting to generate a ton of backspin when I really hit down on the ball. Just backspin..... Not side spin.......It's great. My typical on-green action now is a hop forward then ZIP backwards beyond the original pitch mark. Hell, I stopped a ball that landed on a downslope with a 7 iron. I couldn't believe that ball was still on the green. I could already do this with my wedges before but it's really interesting to start getting this reaction with irons. Hope to hammer out a formal stage 2 in early January. Until then, I'll keep testing

  20. I'll be interested in everyone else's answers to this, but for my part, changing my swing to increase speed isn't merely not something I avoid; it is one of the main goals I have when swinging. As I've continued in this program through the first 8 weeks or so, I've continually found small swing tweaks that add speed at the right part of the swing. This includes things like wrist hinges, fuller shoulder turns, the (obvious) weight shift, posting up stronger on my left leg at impact. The question raised by such tweaks, of course, is whether they can be sustained playably when I have a ball I need to control. That's where those of you doing the protocols while continuing to be able to play have an advantage. I'm trying to blend both by mixing in rounds on the Optishot.

  27. Thanks my friend, they are 2° stronger so I'm guessing when I extend the shaft they will be a half club longer in flight, with me getting on in age and recovering from back surgery I don't anticipate it being a problem for me but a stronger ball striker will probably have some adjusting to do to their set up.

  30. It's sunrise now here in Idaho and what an extraordinary sight to see with no cloud cover this morning. If any of you have the chance to take a peek the next few days before the sun rises where you're at (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere), look to the Southeast and you'll be amazed! First of course there is the "morning Star" Venus (more towards the South). She is really close to us right now (50 million miles) and very bright. But further toward the SE are two other bright orbs that are "close" together, Mercury & Jupiter. Though Jupiter currently is roughly about 12-times further away from us (720.5 million miles) than our current distance from Mercury (59 million miles), Jupiter still looks to be the larger of the two points which just shows you just how big that frickin' planet is!!! Mind-blowing stuff when seen from this perspective. Take a look if you have the chance and geek-out with me. EDIT: In the time it took me to compose this, have stepped outside again and Mercury & Jupiter are already obliterated by the sun's brightness and it hasn't even come above the horizon yet. So, to see them, I'd say you'd need to looking roughly 30-45 minutes before sunrise to see this amazing sight. They'll be just above the horizon by 10 or 20 degrees I'm guessing. Happy viewing!

There's a cyclicality to everything we do. If you're comparing today to 10 years ago, there were fewer golf resources online, there was a certain "newness" to it, and yes, the contests are or were appealing. While there aren't several pages of new posts every hour or day here, I'm ok with that, as my preference is quality over quantity.

  43. Well, Week 12 is now in the books. Overall, this week's max speeds have been similar to the past couple of weeks. However, I would like to make note of an interesting observation between sessions this week. Sessions were Monday-Wednesday-Friday this week, and all sessions were around 10am. I had an bad day on Wednesday; don't know why. Speed was down; no speeds over 100. As I said earlier, it HAS to be radar, right?. It was a little discouraging. I couldn't even blame it on the weather. Wednesday was the warmest day of the week at 48º during the protocol. Monday and Friday were 41º and 42º. The only difference is that on Wednesday it was cloudy and Monday and Friday were sunny. I must like sun. To those considering the SuperSpeed program, you will see up and down days. Don't worry about it. The program is long term, and while short-term trends up are nice to see, it's the long-term effects that will ultimately be important.

And he just annihilated me. He shot a 10-under 62. He had a clean card going until he bogeyed 17, which made him cry. But he regained his composure to birdie 18. Here's the stats from the round: Looks like it's time to turn the difficulty level up on him. Have to do it in the game; once he starts beating me on the course, I can't turn the level up there :-)

  50. Kinda fitting for DawgDaddy's and my birthday A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa taking her faithful aged poodle named Cuddles along for the company. One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch. The old poodle thinks, 'Oh-oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!' Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap the old poodle exclaims loudly, 'Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?' Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!' says the leopard, 'That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!' Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard. The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going t o happen to that conniving canine! Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?', but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says, 'Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard! Moral of this story.... Don't mess with old farts .. age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! Bull**** and brilliance only come with age and experience.
