  1. I have the opportunity this year to teach a couple seminary classes as an adjunct. The extra income from those classes covers the cost of something I've wanted for years: a SkyTrak! It hasn't arrived yet, but today I did some work prepping for its arrival. I already owned a mat and a net in my garage. But I wanted to change things up with the net, to enable the use of a projector. First, I bought a really cheap projector from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07174LM85/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_M99kCbC3HZH8K). I had already picked up a screen (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G579HXJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_6-9kCbH8FKEEM). So today, I grabbed a couple of tarps, rope, bicycle hooks, and zip ties from Walmart. After fastening everything, we ended up with this: Just out of frame, at the top, is a tarp that catches high wedges. So far, everything is looking really promising. I'll definitely keep everyone posted.

    How'd you play?

Tried an "experiment" today. Played a short exec. with my son, and played the front with my usual reckless abandon. "You know I've got to try it" is one of my favorite expressions. Finished that side at +16. On the back, I gave myself one extra stroke per hole. Par 3 turns into 4, 4 turns into 5, etc. Tried to play for "par." It completely changed the way I approached a couple holes. Played the back at +8. Mental, mental, mental. Sent from my XT1585 using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  5. Just a bit petty maybe, but I find it annoying when the shaft is often erroneously referred to as the "engine of the golf club". It isn't. If you're looking for automotive simile to liken the golf shaft to, then are more accurate description would be "transmission". You - the person swinging the golf club - is the originator of the energy to power the golf club and hence the "engine". The shaft, which transmits that energy in a manner to strike the golf ball is just a dumb inert piece of material when at rest - it's not an engine of any kind. A better description would be a "transmission" in that it harnesses the power developed by the swing and allows that energy to be transferred to the golf ball via the club head ( which would make the club head tyres I guess? lol). Anyhoo - just needed to get that off my chest to satisfy my OCD count for today...

Well, if it doesn't matter... Fifteen years ago I was playing golf one day by myself; took a break in the clubhouse. Two women showed up to play. They went out to the first tee so I followed. Since they were alone and the course was full, I asked if I could join them, and they said sure! One was tall with a so-so swing; the other was short and a good swing; playing with persimmon woods and blades. I played really well... for me at the time. The three of us played a few more times after that day, and I played more with the short one. We got married. That's my definition of a catch.

  8. selecting a fitter is akin to selecting a swing coach. If you are wondering about a fitting, call the fitter and ask them to explain their fitting process. If it makes sense to you then you are on your way to a good experience Ask any other general question that might be important to you such as price, discounts, companies used etc. If they address swing flaws. If you have a good feeling about the fitter then schedule the time. IF not move along as chances are you will mentally fight the process and the experience will be poor.

    The 2019 Iron Games

... Bending irons is not an exact science and a .5 + or - is well within a tolerated variance. Even forged irons can be finicky, especially very soft forgings that bend easily. So while I try and get my irons perfectly spec'ed, I am OK with .5 off in either lie or loft after a few attempts. One thing I learned when I first started bending irons was I could bend a full set, taking an hour of careful attention to detail to get them perfect, then check them all again and they could easily be off by .5 because seating the iron head in the LL machine can change everytime you do it. Further, two difference LL machines can give you two different readings with the same iron. ... Now that said, they are your irons and of course you can do whatever you want if you are OCD or just expect perfection.

Most health clubs call them "resolutionists" as people make a resolution to lost weight and then last a month or so. I haven't posted in the thread much, but dropped about 20 lbs before putting 6 back on since Thanksgiving.....I am a sucker for sweets and with all the holiday goodies I struggled. Getting back to work tomorrow and having all the sweets gone will help my drop those lbs. Hoping to drop 10 in the first few months of the year.

  13. For someone who claims that "we" aren't a fan, you sure talk a lot of nonsense that comes across as extremely spoiled and entitled to those of us who have spent most of our lives rooting for the other teams in the AFC Least. I probably shouldn't have posted this, but honestly I wouldn't have if you had claimed you weren't a fan previously. Sounds to me like "we" not only is a fan, but a spoiled and entitled one at that. You can complain about the Patriots when the other three teams in the AFC Least have more Super Bowl wins combined then the Patriots do. Otherwise, just keep quiet and enjoy your unparalleled dominance of a division, conference and league that you've owned for the entire 21st century. Yeah, I probably shouldn't post this, but nothing pisses me off more than Patriots fans pissing and moaning about an 11-5 season and another first round bye. Just shut up!

Man, Texas A&M is taking NC State to the woodshed on both sides of the ball. NC State looks completely gassed, while TAMU looks ready to not only sack the quarterback, but then go after his mother. TAMU ran a simple gap play up the middle, and the dude ran untouched 85 yards for the score. This is completely embarrassing for the ACC, not to mention that this is against a Jimbo Fisher coached team, who I'd love nothing more then to see him lose every single game he coaches for the rest of his life.

    How'd you play?

Looks like that 91 was not a fluke after all. Shot a 94 today in the rain, wind, and fog. Still 3 strokes better than my old pr of 97. I tried to pay attention to the difference today. It's incredible what a little course management can do. I realized I only took driver on about 4 holes which meant I had 0 penalty strokes. On any hole where I could take an iron and still get to the green from 170 or less I always took the iron. I hit 5 greens today doing that which is considerably more than usual. Turns out just trying to smash the ball every hole is not the best way for me to play golf. Attached is my ball mark from the par 3 3rd. It plays about 150. Definitely the most accurate shot of the day. Sent from my Pixel 2 using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  20. In this thread I am going to log all of my tournament rounds. It’s going to be an exciting year and I am looking forward to it. A little bit about who I am. I grew up in western Pennsylvania playing a shorter course in the small town of Kane (Kane Country Club). This is a shorter (6000 yds) course but very tight and small greens. It was a great place to learn the game and grow up. I was lucky enough to play good golf in high school and earned a scholarship to play at St. Bonaventure University. I went on to have a very nice carrier there ( https://gobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-golf/2016-17/files/Golf_Career_Scoring.pdf ). I still hold the records for most wins (5) and lowest year scoring average at 73.0. From there I failed horribly at trying to play professional golf. I went out on my own didn't have a support team, slept in my car and never made a cut. I went back home with my tail between my legs and started over. I didn't play events for a few years as I was trying to find the fun in the game again and with help from my wife (she plays too) it has become a lot of fun again. I know I will never play on tour, but it is fun to try and play in these events. I can still compete and score. If you followed along here last summer on by Ping G700 iron review, I shot a 60 to tie our course record. This is my 2nd course record as the other is at the course I grew up playing in Pennsylvania. A fun note, I have 2 course records (60 at Urbana CC tie with Steve Stricker and Dylan Meyer & 61 at Kane Country Club) but I do not have any hole in ones. This summer I hope to be 100% healthy again and I am looking forward to playing in a lot of events. Feel free to ask any questions and once we get rolling this spring these events will be updated below. If live scoring is available I will post a link next to that event. Thanks to MGS for letting me post here and I hope everyone enjoys the 2019 golf season. 2019 Tournament Schedule May 6th - CDGA Mid-Amateur Qualifying, Kankakee Elks Country Club - 81 (+9) DNQ* May 13 - US Open Qualifying, Illini Country Club - 82 (+11) DNQ June 5 - CDGA Amateur Qualifier, Pontiac Elks Club - 73 (+1) 6th Qualified June 8-9 - Naughtin Open, Lake of the Woods GC* - 71 - 77 - 148 (+4) 3rd place June 15-16 U of I Open, University of Illinois Orange Course - 72 - 69 - 141 (-3) T-4th place June 19 - Illinois State Amateur Qualifying, Hickory Point Golf Course 75 (+3) T-10 DNQ June 24-27 - 100th CDGA Amateur Championship, Glen View Club 77 - 70 (+3) T-22 Did not make Match Play July 24 - Illinois State Mid-Amateur Qualifying, Ironhorse Golf Club 71 (-1) T-2 Qualified July 27-28 - Twin City Championship, Urbana CC and Champaign CC 74 - 71 - 73 (+4) 218 1st Aug 10-11 - Club Championship, Urbana CC*** 72 - 70 (-2) 142 1st Aug 13 - US Mid Amateur Qualifying, Omni Interlocken Golf Club Broomfield, CO 76 (+4) DNQ Aug 20-21 - 27th Illinois State Mid- Amateur Championship, Stonebridge Country Club 72 - 76 - 74 (+6) 222 T-22 Aug 25 - UCC Couples Club Championship, Urbana, IL* 73 1st As of right now if I play well I will have just over 20 tournament rounds in 2019. And LSU just lost another DB to targeting. Do officials honestly have any clue what targeting is and how to call it? There is literally no consistency to how it's called. Today alone I saw a kid from Miss state get called for it when he literally whiffed and missed the ball carrier who wasn't defenseless. Later I see a QB who is defenseless get blown up by a d-tackle and with no call and then they pick up the flag for taunting despite a linebacker standing over the player on the ground and running his mouth. Just pathetic consistency.

  23. Definitely looking to purchase new irons in 2019. I recently went through a 2 hour iron fitting and it came down to Mizuno JPX 919 Forged and Ping i500 in retro lofts. Unfortunately I live in Wisconsin and the fitting was done indoors so I'm waiting for the outdoor demo days to start up in April/May before pulling the trigger on anything. I was also on the fence between three different shaft choices, so it will be good to see ball flight with each set instead of just hitting into a screen.

    The 2019 Iron Games

Good luck with the iron changes and game improvement. I am hoping to improve my ball striking with my irons to hit more greens and get better control of my ball flight. Don't think that will result in any iron changes; the C300 forged I tested last summer are still in my bag and I hit them well. I just need to work on setup and consistent grip. I think my bigger focus will be on the wedge game and trying to find the best wedges for me and understanding how grind may help me.

  28. Snapped up a few more tees and a bag tag (missed the sale, dammit!) just now, but noticed that the store seems a little neglected lately. Was wondering about the re-stock status here on the swag. All hats are gone and most head covers are too. I have both, though I really want one of those heather-colored hats that sold out so fast...darn it! Also, is there anything in the works for the new year? In addition to the current line, I'd like to see some stocking caps, t-shirts, and perhaps some polo shirts mixed in... Ball markers are always hot, so if you all get some more coming, order up about 100 gross..!

    Whats your best joke?

For those of you who need an excuse for drinking too much last night: Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink, I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver." Babe Ruth ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." Lyndon B. Johnson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading." Paul Horning ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not." H. L.. Mencken ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin, we go to heaven. So, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!" George Bernard Shaw ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Benjamin Franklin ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza." Dave Barry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BEER: HELPING UGLY PEOPLE HAVE SEX SINCE 3000 B.C.! W. C. Fields ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Remember "I" before "E," except in Budweiser. Professor Irwin Corey ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a Support Group -Salvation in a can! Leo Durocher ~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One night at Cheers, Cliff Calvin explained the" Buffalo Theory" to his buddy Norm: "Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members! ; In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."
