    Modus 105 vs 950GH

... I made a mistake I just never make when it comes to equipment. Regardless of what you read, hear or see ... NEVER buy equipment without hitting it first. I picked up a set of P760's that came with Nippon 950GH R Flex shafts. I normally play S Flex and although these worked out much better than I would have thought, they did launch a little higher than I like. I have played graphite in my irons for so long I had never considered steel but I was very pleased with the 950GH's. So instead of ordering 950GH in stiff, I found a deal on some Modus 105's in stiff flex and installed those in my P760's. With the first swing I immediately realized I might be in trouble and the rest of the round confirmed it. ... I hit my 9 iron 145yds and can dial up a little more or less when needed. I had 143 to a front pin on a par 3 and came up 10 yds short of the pin. After a few more holes I doubled back and decided to hit several iron shots to each hole starting with the par 3. I hit 4 more balls and everyone of them was short of the green and even more perplexing was when I swung faster, I hit it in the same spot just higher?!? And speaking of higher, the 105's produced a higher trajectory than the 950's. This is not supposed to be the case but it certainly was for me. I can attribute ths to the fact that the 105 felt quite a bit heavier and much stiffer tipped than the 950's and I have little doubt I adjusted my swing to try and find the feel I am used to in my iron shaft losing my lag and adding loft at impact. ... On paper and according to much of what I read the 105's and 950's should at least be similar in performance as well as feel and both get the typical "smooth" description form those that played them. So even though these 2 shafts should have been very similar, for my swing they were not, and by a wide margin. Had I hit some 105's even in a net at a golf store or better yet a range, I would have recognized this right away. But since I have not played steel in over 20 years I made the mistake of relying on specs and reviews after seeing a deal too good to pass up... sigh. I re-lerned a lesson I learned many years ago: NEVER buy equipment without hitting it first.

  3. That is a great find Bucky! As for GB13 anything that happened in 1975 he would have no knowledge of given his age. He has never dialed a phone, rolled up a car window or written a letter.

  11. Google is your friend. Statler and Waldorf are a pair of Muppet characters known for their cantankerous opinions and shared penchant for heckling. The two elderly men first appeared in The Muppet Show in 1975, where they consistently jeered the entirety of the cast and their performances from their balcony seats. In contrast, they found themselves vastly entertaining and inevitably burst into mutual laughter at their own witticisms.

  12. Yeah, I'll be curious to see how Bucky likes playing a club that is rated as an ultra GI. To be fair, I'm not a huge believer in the MPF, but I do think it is a very good starting point. If Cobra packed the forgiveness of a UGI into a GI looking body, they could have a home run. Regards, Team GB13

  13. Hmm, this is a pretty big discrepancy. Old irons were considered Conventional with a MPF of 517. New F9's are Ultra Game Improvement with an 887 MPF. It will be interesting to see if that actually means anything in the grand scheme of things.

  15. I also got out and played 9 after work today. I roped one left across my body trying to smash it and thought I was going to take down a pretty big tree branch. Instead, it just launched a million feet straight up and landed 125 yards lol. Aside from that, Flash was great! Most of these were into wind aside from hole 10(we played the back), and with a Snell MTB Black which honestly feels much shorter than TP5x. The first hole was down wind and I absolutely smoked it, I expected to see a 3 in front of that distance when I walked up to it. The fairways were fluffy so maybe I didn't get any roll out, but I'm guessing it was the ball. Sent from my Pixel 3 using MyGolfSpy mobile app

It's crazy how well Koepka plays in majors. It's like he only turns it in when he's defending a title. I know that's not the case because he's a competitive guy by nature, but how does this guy not just win every tournament major or non-major? It's nice to see someone who is competitive and not trying to be homies with the rest of the tour guys though! Sent from my Pixel 3 using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  22. So, just to sum the scoring up as we sit as of this post... The average score for the E12 Speed was 59. The range was 47 to 68. To basically be within 20 points total is fairly impressive and speaks to all 5 testers seeing similar results. As of this post, we only have 3 of 5 scores for the E12 Soft. The current average rating is 83 but the range is a much larger 66 to 97. It will be interesting to see where the final 2 scores come in and if we have a standard deviation greater than 3 or 6 sigma.

    How'd you play?

A Scramble Saga Well, that was fun! Yesterday I played in my 2nd old guys scramble of the year. A group of old guys started a Wednesday scramble competition twice a month. It's a blind draw, team net score. It's fun in that I get to meet new people that I have never played with before. The 3 guys I played with were in their mid 60's, slightly younger than me (I turned 72 on Tuesday). They were all walking, and I thought about getting my cart out of the trunk and walking too, but since my membership includes a cart, I got one. Good thing... I was the designated "go get that ball in the other fairway." We had a good team, and I was rather humbled. These guys were good. I know that I am not a long hitter, but I keep the ball in front of me and my short game usually keeps my score reasonable. However, i've struggled a little with that lately. There is only one rule to this scramble. The team must use 3 drives from each player... NOT counting par 3's!! My course has 5 par 3's, so that means 3 drives from everyone, and one person gets the extra one. Not much wiggle room. These guys were waaaay past me!! How far, you say?? Here's the story... (sorry to ramble). I figured that we would use my drives on the shorter holes and on the par 5's unless someone poked one out far enough that we had a reasonable chance to reach the green in 2 shots. My first driver used came on the 3rd hole, the #1 handicap hole; water all down the left and big grassy mounds on the right. One guy goes in the water and the other two block right over the mounds onto the #2 tee box trying not to go in the water. I'm down the middle; one drive out of the way. My 2nd driver used came on #6 a par 5; decent poke but not my best. Two guys over the right mounds into #5 fairway (remember, I had the cart so I had to get all these balls). The other guy HIT MY BALL in the fairway, and his ball went in the bunker; second drive out of the way. Then these guys settled down. Long drives, and we just had to pick the best one. I know I'm going to have a problem on the back nine because there are 3 par 3's that we can't count. I was hoping that they all had a bad hole like on the front nine and I could save the day. Didn't happen. When we got to #16, I told them that we had to use my drive on this hole because they wouldn't want to use my drive on the par 5 #18. They agreed. I didn't catch my best drive but I was in the fairway, 152y out. After we teed off, I went to pick up their 3 balls. They were all within 10 feet of each other in the fairway 98y from the green; 54 yards ahead of me!! I hated to pick them up. But it was a smart move because I can't get far enough down the fairway to see around the corner of the dogleg on the par 5 #18. One guy put his drive on the 200y marker, and two guys put their 2nd shots on the green (missed eagle though). Overall, we were -6 but -11 won. I made two birdie putts, but none of us putted very well. I hit decent shots on the par 3's, but we never birdied a par 3, and there are 5 of them!! Here's my conclusion. I had a great time playing with these guys, and I think they enjoyed playing with me. However, no team needs a short, straight driver of the golf ball in a scramble. While my drive was helpful on two occasions, other balls could have been played without really affecting our team score. I have a decent short game and putt well most of the time, but I am really no better than two of the other guys. What was the term used for Captain Kirk on that Star Trek episode... Captain Dunsel?? What's funny though is that my handicap is about the same as theirs.

  24. Just ordered a Project X EvenFlow Blue 6.0 65g with the M5 adapter. A friend of one of my cousins (by marriage) works in the same building as me and I see him every morning. We were talking shafts this morning and he's going to give me a Diamana Blueboard 60S with a TaylorMade adapter to test drive as well.

  25. It shouldn't, but this "Koepka only turns it on for majors" thing annoys me. I don't mind dominance in sports; I tend to root for Goliath. But in Tiger's prime, he wanted to win everything, all the time. The perception (whether true or not) that Koepka coasts through ordinary events, as though they are beneath his effort, isn't winning me over.

  33. ... Yup, I don't second guess anyones equipment snobbery if they can play the game at a decent level of consistency. And if they can't really play the game but are equipment snobs, that really isn't any of my business either.

  34. I got out after work and was able to get nine holes in. My entire game was a raging dumpster fire with the exception of the driver. I ended up shooting a 53, but had the lowest driving handicap I've had for a round yet. Plus, I averaged 229 off the tee on a day where we had enough rain to make the fairways soft. My round highlight was my tee shot on three, while it wasn't my longest it was the most significant to me. When I started the SuperSpeed training I had two goals, be able to reach the green on 12 off the tee and hit one over the creek that crosses 3. I was finally able to clear it today. I'm still amazed at the forgiveness that Callaway was able to pack into this driver, I hit one a bit on the toe and still got decent yardage due to a left to right slope on the eighth. I'm really not happy with the overall state of my game today, but I'm ecstatic with how the Epic Flash Sub Zero just keeps performing. Sent from my SM-G955U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

  35. As someone who was not a fan of the dropped shots problem during my review in the fall of 2018, I have been blown away this spring with the new update to Arccos. I’ve played two rounds down here in Virginia Beach with only looking to Arccos for distances. At the end of both rounds, Arccos had only missed one full swing and four tap in putts. 36 holes and only 5 “missed” shots with 4 of those being tap ins. I am blown away with how much better the system is compared to the fall. The data has also become more defined as I have played more rounds. This was something I felt would happen, but it is great to see it in action. The handicap dashboards not only show you the Arccos handicap, but then your true trends can be drilled down even further. For example: When I have a GIR, my average is 2.2 putts. That means I’m taking birdie opportunities and turning them into bogies. Something I need to address. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

I’m definitely in the likes BK crowd. Guy had some serious game. When he switched to Nike and they had that that bullpen of superstars is when I became a fan. Too bad he isn’t a little more well liked, it’s odd... he has potential to be the modern day Arnie. I don’t know why he doesn’t have the “Athletic Kids” following him around. By that I mean the multi sport athletes. Him and Gary Woodland are becoming two of my favorites. Plus he plays that wonderous fade... pretty much on every shot. Like me some faders....

  37. Try it again soon - good days and bad days you know. I didn’t use any swing speed devices today because I just wanted to hit a few shots with every club - haven’t swung a club for a week and wanted to remember what the clubs looked like. Warmed up, hit wedge, 9,,8 got to 7 and started to reach the flag that I was aiming aid so I grabbed my range finder expecting to see 165 or so pop up - 172! Grabbed 6 iron and started knocking it past. I was waving good by to the 185 flag with the 4 hybrid and way past the farther flag that was 230 with driver. Very pleased and I hit it solidly too - my poorest shots were a bit thin but playable! Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

It makes perfect sense to me but I'm a little warped! He isn't engaged when playing tournaments where -24 is the winning score. In tournaments where par is a quality score, he is more engaged and knows he doesn't have to birdie every other hole to compete. It frees him up to play his game if that makes sense. Koepka reminds me a bit of Raymond Floyd. Indifferent at times during birdie-fest tournaments but always showed up on the toughest tracks.

  45. Personally I would avoid a hard case at all cost. Insurance be damned. They are a royal pain in the A$$ in rental cars unless you have a Chevy Suburban like SUV. Also they take up a lot more storage room at home ALL YEAR. The others fold up nicely for storage. Really any of the quality club glove or sun mountain bags will protect them fine. Almost 20 years traveling with them and not one issue. For added piece of mind take your driver and three wood heads off and store them wrapped in a towel in the bag pocket. Pro tip: take a picture of the hosel settings before you do so you'll remember what you had it set on. Just my personal thoughts. But to me there is one reason to ever have to get a hard case.
