    How'd you play?

... Shot an 82, my highest score in quite awhile today. My 28 yr old son starting working at a CC as a bartender several months ago and finally took me out on employee day. First time he has played the course. 20+ mph winds, greens rolling at 12 with plenty of slope and just a very tight old school golf course with a plethora of bunkers lining the fairway right in landing areas and around the green. It is a fair test but very difficult if you are not in the right spots and of course first time playing it I was in plenty of wrong spots, especially on the greens. "Had I know I would have stayed on the left side" kinda thing. But an enjoyable test of all the shots and I don't see many old score courses like this anymore. Wind died down on the final 4 holes and it was a real treat. Of course spending the day playing golf with my son is as good as it gets, so a high score was the least of my concerns.

Almost done expanding my patio. 5 tons of stone and a ton of sand for the base and 225 12"x12" pavers. Did all of the work myself over 3 days. Just need to put the finishing touches on it.

Monday played front 9 not quite ready for 18. Finally hit driver Nd is working out OK, no pain or soreness. Driver around 220 that’s fine with me but irons are 10 yards shorter and flight much lower than B4 shoulder injury. We had a 76 year old guy join us. On his bag I spotted a “shot my age” tag. Talking to him about it he said just one of those days where everything went right, guess so. Anyway feeling great about surgery recovery and hope to bang out 18 soon. 11. Narrowed it down over the last few months based on looks and initial feel of a few shots when I could 'try' one. Eliminated Ping G410 on looks, sound and feel. Eliminated Callaway on looks, sound and feel. Eliminated Titleist on inconsistent feel and results. Demo'd the Taylormade M5 v's Cobra F9 v's Titleist 910D3 (current gamer) today using new Wilson balls and flightscope. Overall; TM and Cobra were similar lengths - averaging 225yd carry with some at 240yd carry. Titleist average 210yd carry. TM spin avg 2500 - Cobra 2250 - Titleist 2900. TM launch avg 12*-14* - Cobra launch avg 12*-15* - Titleist launch avg 10*-13*. TM ball speed avg 140mph - Cobra ball speed avg 143mph - Titleist ball speed avg 138mph. Swing speed avg with Titleist 98mph-100mph, TM 101-103mph - Cobra 101-104mph. TM Tensei shaft was a full one inch longer than the Cobra Fujikura or the Titleist Diamana whiteboard 70. At address the Titleist and Cobra sat square, TM looked slightly open. All heads were at standard A1 setting (neutral). TM and Cobra heads were 10.5 while Titleist was 9.5 so not exactly like for like but it gave me a good idea. Dispersion was large with Titleist, half as narrow with TM M5 and tighter still with the Cobra F9. So after all that what am I going to go with? you guessed it....................sticking with the Titleist 910D3. /joke The Cobra F9 won overall plus when I stepped on a drive (you have to try that as well during a fitting as that's what you'll do on the course) the Titleist was poor, the TM was good and the Cobra was great, Swing speed went up to 104-105 with TM and Cobra on a crushed drive while it stayed nearer 102 with Titleist but the TM and Cobra retained dispersion. Just have to have a quiet word with SWMBO to justify the outlay but I think she'll approve as it 'could' make me happier on the course, and we all like a happy ending Sorry for the long post but thought it worth sharing as I haven't changed driver in a very long time.

The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. I can only imagine how white your skin is from being stuck in the hinterlands.... good luck with the move and enjoy the new digs! How about posting a Seve-like 3 iron out of the sand on the beach once you get there ???

  14. About two months ago I bought the new 2019 Callaway PM Grind in a 54º/14 bounce. I've been playing it out of bunkers, rough, and from tight fairway lies. At first I wasn't sure if I liked it. It took awhile to get used to the sole/turf interaction, as I have been playing the SCOR with the V-sole. I had also been playing the Callaway Sure-Out wedge strictly from bunkers with great results. This PM grind is just as good from the sand and very versatile from other lies as well. Sooooooo, today I received the 2019 Callaway PM Grind in a 60º/12 bounce. I only had time to hit a few pitches and chips, but I think I am in love... again! I didn't hit any full shots; I rarely do anyway with either the SW or LW, but the ball really checks up!! More so than my 7-year old SCORs. I will need to spend some time practicing shots around the green; the ball check up so quickly, I really had to work at getting the ball to the hole on shot chips. Whole different shot than I'm used to!!

    How'd you play?

This last weekend I had rather uneventful rounds of 84 and 79. I am still not putting very well. The 79 came on Sunday from better ball striking, hitting more greens, but I'm still averaging about 33 putts per round; 2-3 more than normal. The nice round came today with my walking buddies. One guy hasn't been playing for there for more than a month; a 76-year old Marine Col. pilot (I was informed that there are no "former" Marines.) he's a better player than I am; probably a 6 hcp, but we usually are about the same off the tee. We only played 9 holes, and he shot +1; I shot +2, bogeying the first two holes which are the easiest on the front nine. I was happy with that. I outdrove him on most holes; I had a couple of 230+ yarders; no wind. HUGE for me, but summer is about here, so fairways are firming up!! On the Par 4 #3 hole (#1hcp) shown here looking back to the fairway from the green: water all down the left side and in front of the green and high grassy mounds all down the right side of the fairway; I hit a slight draw 230y to the center of the fairway, then a wedge to the center of the green 3 feet from the hole. Nice birdie on a hole that I make bogey 50% of the time and occasionally a double bogey or worse. On the 146y par 3 #4 hole I hit a 9i to 8 feet pin high; missed! The 565y par 5 #5 was driver, 3W, wedge to 2 feet; didn't miss that one! I also managed to par the 546y par 5 dogleg left #9 hole with a pond in front. Here's a view from the fairway looking toward the green from over 300y out... do NOT want to go left; bad grassy hill!!

    How'd you play?

I don't really know how I played today. I felt like I hit the ball well, but just didn't score well. Shot an 80, but it could have been much, much, much lower. Played a really nice linksy course with the wind blowing 40mph. Straight foward, well maintained, but still HARD. Lots of shots where you know exactly what you need to do, but it's still hard to pull off. Probably ended up having 10-12 bunker shots today. Fun day.

  18. So far so good. Lots of info here. Bucky was strong in the opening, but lost me with a 73-78 performance winning by 11 in a flighted tourney as a 7 capper. Good rounds though. Couple of Lefties were strong as well. There is so much info in these openings, it will take a bit of time to get through it all.

    How'd you play?

Played in a scramble today with 3 co-workers, we shot 2 over. Not bad considering that it was my first time on a golf course this season, another played on Friday for the first time this season, and the third member hadn't even touched his clubs in 5 years. Our fourth plays in a scratch league weekly We had a few holes where we used my drive & approach shot which was nice. I had a great bump and run from about 30 yards out that ended with a tap-in. I also had some absolute trash tee shots and I couldn't hit my Heavenwood off the deck at all, which is surprising for me. All in all it was a heck of a fun day.

  29. Its Finallyyyyyy Timeeeee!!!!! Welcome everyone! The first thing I want to do it is thank MGS and Cobra for letting me be a part of this incredible challenge. Being a high handicapper, I wasn’t sure I’d get an opportunity like this but I know there others out there like me, so I’m hoping I can be of service to you. My name is Bradley, I’m 29 and I live just north of Atlanta. I’m married and we have two pups, one of which is my profile pic, and we have a 7 month old little girl who is my pride and joy. Warning: Adorable kid pic incoming: I’ve been golfing a year and a half or so now. My first round ever was at my in-laws Thanksgiving “Turkey Open” family scramble where I played for fun with my brother-in-law and father-in-law. It was a blast, I was terrible, but I had so much fun that I’ve never looked back. Here are my current gamer clubs: Driver: Cobra F7 - Aldila 2KNV Stiff shaft Irons: Taylormade Rocketbladez Stiff 4-PW Wedges: Bridgestone Tour B XW-1 52º / 56º / 60º So hows my golf game? Yeah it’s okay, I try to not be too hard on myself being pretty new to the game but I am a perfectionist and I hate being bad at anything. I recently joined a club that is well known to be the hardest course in the immediate area. This was intentional because I want to be better at the game. I play the blues which sit at a 72.8 / 136 and 6,600 yards long. It’s probably way too tough for me. My first round I shot a 113, since then I’ve come back down and currently my average score is around a 102. I have yet to break 100 at my new course in a full 18 hole round. That being said its teaching me the premium of keeping the ball in play as the rough is extremely punishing on most holes and it forces me to play shots I never would have before. Here’s my baseline stats with my pre-cobra gamers. I am the epitome of the high handicapper golfer, inconsistent ball striking with some good shots sprinkled in. I 3 putt sometimes, sometimes I don’t. I hit a power slice when my Driver isn't working, but overall the biggest problem with my golf game is inconsistency with my irons. Pretty standard stuff and if you’re over an 18 handicap everything I am saying here probably resonates with you. Some more details: Driving wise, you can see my average dispersion is only 20 yards, but I have a big time two way miss, I’ve been holding back on the tee lately in an effort to hit fairways more and lose less balls. The problem is that gives me a 4 or 5 iron into alot of the greens. Here’s my usage chart on my clubs from arccos: You can see that leaving myself short off the tee means my 4 and 5 iron are used more than anything else. I almost never am in range to use a scoring club to get to the green reliably. Because of this, my approach stats show what I already know is the truth, I'm short alot... Short, short, short. Left and right aren’t nearly the issue here. Its thinning and chunking long irons that cause all the problems. As you can see a lot of my approach shots are 30 yards or more short of the green, which means I’m constantly hitting short pitches into the green and trying to save par. With my handicap I don’t mind missing greens, I expect it, the real problem is the distance I’m leaving everything short. It makes chipping or pitching anything close very difficult. The greens I play on are really fast, I know everyone says that, but they are the fastest I have played in my limited time golfing and pitching from 30+ yards often leaves me far away from the pin. If I’m greenside but off the fringe and I can’t putt it, I do fairly well. When I move the slider in, I’m averaging 6 to 8 ft from 15 yards and in on chipping, The problem is that only 11% of my baseline chips are inside 15 yards… Sand.... I’m a 22 handicap, the only beach I do well on has a chair and a cooler full of beer on it, not a golf ball. Seriously though, I leave sand shots short primarily, I’m always scared of sending them over the green or thinning them. Most of the time I can get out in one, but I do have the occasional 3-peat to get out of a high lipped trap. On to The Fun Part That was a lot, you guys still with me? I saved the best part for last. First let’s hit the high notes and walk through what my fitting revealed and the clubs I chose: The Bag: Driver: F9 9º Degree head, Evenflow White T1100 X Stiff Woods: 3/4 Wood, Evenflow White T1100 X Stiff Hybrid: 3 Hybrid, Aldila 2KNV Green X Stiff Irons: One Length F9’s 4-PW, Modus3 Tour 105’s Stiff Wedges: King Black Wedges in 50º / 54º / 58º Bag: Black / Black Stand Bag (I freaking love this thing) Fitting Overview: So I saw a cobra fitter, without going into too much detail. I swing hard and put a lot of torque on the butt of my clubs shaft. So he selected shafts for me that basically have no butt end and pretty much demanded that I go with X Stiff in all my woods and hybrids to prevent whipping and increase control. He also suggested that I go with a D4 swing weight on my irons, especially if I was going one length because of my size, he was concerned that I’d get too loose and wouldn’t be able to control the clubs if they weighed in at their stock D0 swing weight. My irons and wedges are also 1 inch longer than standard and the grips are like +4 wraps or something, which is an adjustment, but they do feel a lot better to hold. I also went with a 3 hybrid and a 3 wood. My 4 iron is typically right around 200 yards. So I need some extra distance to recover from poor tee shots or hit long 2nd shots into par 5’s. So I went with the 3 Hybrid hoping for a 215-235 club and a 3 wood for something just over that, 230 - 260 or so would be great. We have a few tight par 4’s that require a limited tee shot and a little more control than a driver usually gives me. So I’m hoping I can hit those fairways a little more consistently with these clubs. BUT WHY ONE LENGTHS?!?!?! I hear all of you screaming, I’m the only one length tester in this crew. Cobra swears these things work. They have a lot of tech in them to make them work. Progressive shaft weighting to make the same shaft work and gapping consistent, Wider soles in the 4-6 irons to help with launch and trajectory on top of all of the standard F9 features like Progressive Hosel lengths, E9 Pwrshell face, etc... You get it. You read everyone else’s intros too. What you really want to know is do these things work? Can a high handicapper like myself really be more consistent just because all of his irons are the same length. You’ve seen my approach stats, you know I need something to help me. I chose them because I want to eliminate some variables. I think too much as it is on the course. Take away ball position and swing changes due to shaft length and I think I can improve my consistency. I really feel like that is all that’s left in my game to take me from a 20+ index to a mid handicapper. Whats it gonna take for them to stay? My old set isn't exactly nice, but one thing I have with them is consistent gapping. My old wedges are great, I hit them well when I get to hit them, My driver might not be the most accurate, but when I have good days with it, I have really really good days. For the Cobras to hang around, what I really need to see is consistency throughout the bag. I need my driver dispersion to be tighter and preferably limited to a one way miss, I obviously need consistent contact with the One length irons, since thats kind of the point. The wedges have the most to live up too as the XW-1's I reviewed are very good, but the lower lofts have to help with gapping and consistency. It would be nice to be able to use that 58º reliably. I know, thats a lot to ask of the arrow, but I feel like I'm close to being a better golfer and I'm hoping these clubs can help mitigate some bad habits I have and get me shooting the scores that I feel like I should be. Lets make it rain with questions folks, especially with regards to the One Lengths, I'll do my best to answer everything I can.

  30. “Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you what you are” – Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin Hrmm… I realize now that leading with a quote like @MaxEntropy only works if it’s something related to golf, not the late 90’s cultural phenomenon in the Bergman family house known as Iron Chef. So I guess I’ll continue with the general platitudes about thanking the MGS Community and Odyssey for the opportunity to test the brand new Stroke Lab line of putters from Odyssey Golf. For those of you who don’t know me or just want to stay here, below is the link to the review I put together last year for the Mizuno ST-180 Driver so you can get an idea of the man behind the account and my irreverent antics https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/24765-2018-official-forum-member-review-mizuno-st180-driver/?tab=comments#comment-443327 As an update, still dating that girl and now have a new job working as a family court attorney for legal aid. It’s put a crunch on my practice time, but I continue to play once a week and play pretty decently. My handicap has risen a half stroke this season to nearly 10, but I’m hanging on to that single digit cap by the skin of my teeth. So, let’s talk flat sticks, shall we. The first putter I ever bought myself was a Dunlop Hexcert milled putter with a urethane insert in a #9 style for $20 at a K-Mart in Fulton, NY. A few years later I landed one of my dream putters from Dick’s Sporting Goods, A Taylormade Nubbins M2 that I slapped a Lamkin Crossline on and used for the next two years. Then, I found my long-term relationship, the Nickent Pipe, and that relationship, save for a 2 month trial separation with the Taylormade Daddy Long Legs in 2016, has been going on since 2006. What do I love about my Pipe? Well, the visual alignment system of having a ball width alignment aid is awesome. The weird shape catches my eye, and after adding more lead tape to the bottom of it than is possibly advisable, the feel is awesome. Its specs? Standard loft, 34.5 inches, 72 degree lie angle. Current grip is a Flat Cat Fat, put on regular style, but it’s had a Fatso, Flatso, Flatso Mid, and a SS2 from Superstroke on it before. Also, it is nicknamed Mjolnir, as one must be worthy to wield it responsibly. It has been in my bag for my greatest golfing achievements and my greatest golfing failures. It has been mostly one of the best clubs in my bag over the past 13 years as one would expect since the relationship has lasted. But, much like the events of Thor:Ragnarok and the comics have shown, sometimes Mjolnir is broken or cannot be wielded and a new weapon has emerged. For me, this metaphor leads to this the Odyssey Stroke Lab line of putters. By now, you know the deal. A multimaterial shaft (if I had to guess it looks to be from Grafalloy and their BiMatrix shafts, since the shaft was called a BiMatrix on my receipt) allow Odyssey to add 10 grams to the head weight of the putter and thirty grams to the back end, creating a slight counterbalancing effect for stroke repetition. Add to that the White Hot Microhinge insert face and you have the classic soft feeling insert from Odyssey with roll enhancement technology. Now, you’re wondering by now that I haven’t talked about the fitting process I went through to arrive at my new flatstick. Well, the reason for that is simple, I think it’s important enough to discuss my fitting that much like my driver thread, I plan on making it into its own separate post outside of stage one. Why you may ask? Well, because I ended up getting fit into this. Yes, do not adjust your set. What you see here is indeed the Odyssey Stroke Lab One, the heel-toe weighted blade closest to the Newport and Anser. That’s right, the man who has only every used a mallet or mid-malletesque shape is now a card carrying member of blade putter nation. Also, worth noting that there were a lot of different grip choices, but the one on my Stroke Lab, the base pistol style grip, not oversized, no extra wraps, no nothing. Specs are as follows. 1 degree delofted from standard, 71 degree lie, 34 inches even. Obviously for me this is going to take some time getting used to, just look at how different the two look at address. And the feel with take some adjustment as well. The putts you are about to see were struck with the exact same ball, A Srixon Q-Star Tour, toward a nondescript spot on a putting green in Caughdenoy, NY. Admittedly it’s a very slight difference in sound and feel, but it does feel as if Stroke Lab is rolling sooner. Perhaps I’ll need to steal from @MaxEntropy again and get some slo-mo work on my ball rolling. So, how will I be looking for the review of this putter? Well, let’s start with the obvious, it’s gotta get the ball in and near the hole. I don’t have those fancy stat tracking things like others and honestly most of my time is going to be more on course testing than practice putting. Well, I’ll be tracking total putts per round, of which I already have two under my belt and also tracking 3 putts as well. I’ll probably be getting a Puttout trainer or resetting up my idoor putting trainer, the thing we all probably have got for one Christmas or another with the little bit of turf (4-6 feet and the cup on the slope). If you have any advice for drills or tests you want to see, don’t stay silent, let us know and we’ll do what’s possible. I look forward to taking you on this journey throughout the summer with @MaxEntropy @juspoole and @Apolloshowl. In the words of the chairman, Allez Cuisine!

I am off to do the same thing again at a new place, going in the door with the same amount of energy that I came here with. It’s bittersweet leaving here, I hate winters, but summers are absolutely amazing. Watched my children grow, going to a 4 room schoolhouse with 30 people total was awesome, we’ll never get that anywhere else. But this awaits, and I couldn’t be more excited. Far better than....

    How'd you play?

Monday men's league ended up continuing the trend of really good rounds despite the strong winds that ended up being a side wind on just about every hole. I ended up driving or nearly driving both par 5's in two and cranked out a few really pretty putts including a few from 10-15 feet that were dead on line. I know it's about 3-4 years since the TIBA system came out and I bought it, but finally got around to using it. My word has it improved my putting in only two uses. Even taking an ESC 8 on a hole I managed to shoot 45. I'm finally turning the corner, hopefully.

  46. After golf today, Kirke went bowling with his grandparents. I know he's got to turn his arm over to deliver the ball properly, but other than that, check out this form: The kid is a better natural athlete than I am, that's for sure.

  47. Whoop! Big weekend around the Garcia household. Got some small, important, exciting, and huge projects going on with many wrapping up. ++++++++++++++++++++ Small... Hung some tall blackout curtains for my youngest so she can take her naps in peace. Of course the oldest liked the look of bigger curtains (hers are already blackout) so I bet I'll end up doing the same for her too. ++++++++++++++++++++ Important... That damn shower door. You know, the one I started this thread complaining about. We're working on our 4th year in the house and I FINALLY tackled that SOB. Yyeeeeaaaahhhaaaaw. The biggest issue came down to the alignment of the door. Had to use a rubber mallet to bang the corner in further for a straight hang then install some spacers to raise it up for clearance. Replaced the water seal and caulk (first time caulking and hated it) for good measure and the door is behaving for the first time since we moved in. ++++++++++++++++++++ Exciting... The Mrs and I just celebrated 5 years back in May. The traditional present for 5 years is wood so I got her a stack of wood and plans to build an Adirondak love seat. . I had to work on this thing one step at a time to fit it in around our busy schedule but finally finished it up today. AND IT SITS FLAT ON THE GROUND!! Very pleased with how it came out as this was the most difficult build I've done yet. Still need to paint it but here's the final result: ++++++++++++++++++++ Huge.... My wife just started watching that tidying up show on Netflix with Marie Kondo. Needless to say, we're going through a full-on wardrobe cleanse. More to go on that but we're charging ahead for trash bags of clothes to donate. ++++++++++++++++++++ I'm sure a golfing community like this understands that one of the best parts of projects like this is new tools. I'm finally getting to the point where I feel like I've got a reasonably strong collection and can take on more projects. Can't wait to see what's next.

We did a ton this year but this has to be my favorite. My parents helped us build this in our family room.
