"Free Your Mind" Take your existing swing and learn how to score. Granted some decent fundamentals are good to have but they don't have to be perfect. Not by any means. Learning to score is different from learning how to play this game. I've known and know tons of people that play golf but they've never really learned how to score.

Started poorly, bogeying 5 of the first six holes but ultimately shot 78 today. Only one birdie, although I had at least 3 very reasonable attempts that I missed.

I was reading the OP by @PMookie and it seems we are living similar games on the golf course. I just checked GHIN for my handicap history this year, and I went as low as a 4.9, and I am currently at my high for the year, at 7.2. I do know that I got down to a 4.9 because I posted a 71 in a tournament and that sort of skewed my handicap for a few months. Now that that round is gone, I figure my handicap is about where it should be. But that 71 was my personal best round ever, so 2019 wasn't all bad in my book. Still, I used to be obsessed with my handicap and how to make it go lower, and now I am actually focusing on how to play the game as honest as possible, and counting each and every stroke, good or bad. I mean honestly, I'm not even upset that my handicap is at 7.2. I just go out and play, and let the game just sort of happen, with the expectations being virtually non-existent. I've got my Saturday dog fight to keep me competitive, but honestly, when you are only able to play on Saturdays and maybe once during the week, with little to no practice, what should your expectations be? I'm working on getting more time to practice and play, but I guess my attitude is just one of being happy to play the game. Life is all about balance anyway, so it is what it is. Just enjoy golf when you can and don't worry too much about the score.

My wife and I spent a week in Hawaii: 2 days on Oahu and 5 on Kaua'i. We had the best times. Our concierge screwed up an activity for us so we snuck over to Poipu Bay CC for 9 holes. 9 holes and rentals for 2 was quite spendy. But the course was beautiful and in incredible shape. The view between 9,16,17 is breathtaking. I got the premium rental set: Titleist TS2 driver and 3w, 918 h fairway 21°, 5-aw AP3, Vokey SM7 52 and 56°, Scotty Cameron mallet putter. These clubs worked excellent. Given time to gauge my distances, I probably would have shot 3-4 lower. The irons worked great, a bit less soft feel than my Lynx irons but smashed straight and long. And dead ctr shots felt good. My wife got Cleveland Launchers which had the Launcher HB irons. They definitely seemed easier for her to hit.

Having started this thread, I'll go first. I've been fighting the early extension since I started swinging a club. This winter, I'm taking dead aim at it, attempting to build a swing that depends more on body rotation than hand timing. I'm not sure why the idea occured to me, but in my last practice session, I realized that my trail knee immediately starts forward, toward the ball, in transition. My change of intention, then, was to think of driving my knee down the line, rather than toward the ball. If you try it (this is a key to any "I've solved golf story"), you'll find that it's very hard to get your hips extended to the ball when your trail leg is turning down the line. +5 on the back. Had 8 foot birdie putts on #10 and 11 and missed them both left. Smoked a drive on 12 then the wheels came off a bit. Couldnt string 2 shots together after that tee shot. Found two bunkers along the way and a tree. Lucky I had no 3 putts.

I would say 50-50 skill to luck. You can put yourself in a great position based on drafting, trades, waiver wire claims, and matchup awareness. Unfortunately that’s where our control ends and the actual games have to be played.

... Great post! But I have a feeling this numbers would be closer to 1% and 50%. Pro's hit the ball flag high often, but when they miss they miss long 50% and short 50%. Am's miss short 99% of the time for the reason you stated above, they completely over estimate their "average" iron shot. I used to give my students the advice of picking the club you would normally hit for every full shot during a round, then take one more club and hit it like the club you chose. In other words don't worry about hitting long, take one more club and take your full, normal swing. It is very rare, even taking one more club, for mid to high index players to fly the green because they hit a perfect shot. ... I would add even low index players tend to do the same thing, just to a lesser degree. Instead of missing the green they are 10-15 feet short of the pin more often than not. It takes a lot of confidence and trust to say "170 is my normal 7 iron when struck well, but here is a good chance I miss this just a little and hit it 165. So I will take a 6 iron for this 169yd shot to a middle pin and choke down 1/2" and trust I have the right club." If they hit it perfectly, they still only have a 10-15 foot putt from past the pin but most likely they will be close to the flag for distance but a mishit will still find the front of the green.

Always use modification of heads as a last resort to club building. If there isn't a 0.355 taper variant to the shafts that you want use (and there probably is) then you have no other option.. Think carefully before proceeding any further. Long story short - fit components to fit components - never alter components to fit components unless you have no other option.

2019 wasn't ideal for me on the golf department. Handicap essentially remained unchanged. I didn't practice anywhere near enough to get better. And I didn't play in any tournaments. And it was a bit rough in the personal life as well as my wife was diagnosed with skin cancer (thankfully it's been removed and all looks good), my mother in law was diagnosed with liver cancer, and my grandma was diagnosed with throat cancer. Cancer can suck it... But I will say the birth of our little daughter has been the gift that keeps on giving. I love her so unbelievably much. And the start of my new business venture has done alright so far, and I'm hoping it takes off after the holidays. Life is a lot of ups and downs...and no matter your situation, things sometimes come hard and fast. But I've learned you do your best, and move on the best you can. I'm welcoming 2020 with open arms and an open mind with both my golf game and life in general. I'm planning a more focused practice/playing schedule and time with family. I had just about given up on places like this after dabbling in 3 others. One was run by a person who seemed all about pushing a book and was always looking to argue with anyone who didn't echo his opinions. Always had to have the last word with everyone. After a while the only reason I posted was to ruffle his (and his minions) feathers, and I'm usually not that guy. Another place turned me off with their fan boy approach to a certain OEM. Most of the regulars seemed to be part of a click who all worshiped at the altar of a staff member who loved to talk about his prodigious distance and how far he hit every club he tested. I enjoyed the place for a while, but when I started questioning the reviews of their "house brand OEM" and the pricing of new clubs, I touched a nerve, and soon realized I wasn't a fit there. The site I liked the least is probably the biggest and best known. Plenty of information, but after a while I tired of some of the egos. I rarely posted, because the people who did so the most didn't seem very friendly. It was like they judged others by how low their hcap was or how far they hit a ball. They were either arguing or bragging about their 125 mph swing speeds and 280 yard 3 woods hit inside ten feet of a tucked pin. I love it here, and found it while looking for a review. When I read the thread about that particular club, I was struck by the respectful and friendly way everyone interacted. Remember the Cleveland Launcher HB thread @ole gray & @MattF? It's the way I like to be with people, so I was intrigued. I lurked for a month or so, then dove in. I haven't regretted it, and haven't logged into another golf site since. I think you fellas will be stuck with me for a long time. Everyone seems to get along, the vibe is relaxed, and the better players don't look down on the mid and higher caps. The staff seems very nice, there is a great mix of posters, and like someone mentioned, the old guard was very welcoming. When I'm here I feel like I've been placed as a single into a great foursome. Easy conversations about golf and whatever else is on your mind with very nice people. Thanks for having me!!!

I only shot in the 70's 4 times the whole season. I attribute that to work schedule, no practice and too much beer while playing. I had a great time this year on the course. Maybe 2020 will be better scoring wise, but if not, I bet I'll still have a great time playing golf. Disclaimer: I'm just not as consumed with my score as I have been in the past.

I just read the latest and thought it was generally good. I was disappointed that it didn't show the variances in the various metrics. For instance if you use Trackman or another/more accurate device as a baseline, what is the difference between the units in all of the metrics, i.e. swing speed, ball speed, distance, etc. For me that would have been more meaningful than a forced ranking. Just my thoughts.

Horrible scoring year for me this year. I very rarely got out to practice with the change in houses, and the job affecting my ability to play a whole heck of a lot, at least until summertime. I end the year with a two way miss off the teebox, reduced greens in regulation compared to a year ago, chipping yips, and just about everything else. I’m pretty frustrated with my game at this point, and my handicap moved from 5.6 all the way to 7.7 according to my latest GHIN update. A two-stroke rise is not what I was hoping for this year. My biggest problem was lessons from three different coaches, so not a cohesive way to improve a swing. I will be moving forward with just using the Mike Bender approach, and I hope I make a little bit of bonus money to be able to continue to send him video for lessons. Just been an absolutely rough year on the golf course. Way more 90s than I’ve had in a long time, with very few 70s to offset that. I’m praying this coming year will be better as I will be closer to home, and hopefully back to practicing more often. I hate being a bogey golfer! They're He-eere!!!! Arrived this morning and we were at the driving range/course within the hour. Initially warming up it took me a few swings to get the feel for the setup and takeaway with the different lie angle. I got out on the course and first hole was a GIR with the U-wedge from about 115. From there it was still a bit of feeling them out but by the time I got to the back 9 I was really comfortable making aggressive full swings. I'm still adjusting my eye to these at setup with the slightly large club head and a little more offset. It took backing off a couple of shots and verifying the club face was square to the target line and then building my setup from there. Then just believing the setup was square and swinging through. Ball flight was not noticeably higher than the Hogan or Mizuno sets I'm comparing. My misses today were mostly just hangers out to the right, and only one of my trademark monster hooks. I was able to sneak that quick warm-up and round in before work so it was a quick first effort. I'll have a chance to give them a more detailed workout later in the week.

A father, son and grandson went to the country club for their weekly round of golf. Just as they reached the first tee, a beautiful young blonde woman carrying her bag of clubs approached them. She explained that the member who brought her to the club for a round of golf had an emergency that called him away and asked the trio whether she could join them. Naturally, the guys all agreed. Smiling, the blonde thanked them and said, 'Look, fellows, I work in a topless bar as a dancer, so nothing shocks me anymore. If any of you want to smoke cigars, have a beer, bet, swear, tell off-color stories or do anything that you normally do when playing a round together, go ahead. But, I enjoy playing golf, consider myself pretty good at it, so don't try to coach me on how to play my shots.' With that the guys agreed to relax and invited her to drive first. All eyes were fastened on her shapely behind as she bent to place her ball on the tee. She then took her driver and hit the ball 270 yards down the middle, right in front of the green. The father's mouth was agape. 'That was beautiful,' he said. The blonde put her driver away and said, 'I really didn't get into it, and I faded it a little.' After the three guys hit their drives and their second shots, the blonde took out an eight iron and lofted the ball within five feet of the hole. (She was closest to the pin.) The son said, 'Damn, lady, you played that perfectly.' The blonde frowned and said, 'It was a little weak, but even an easy seven would have been too much club. I've left a tricky little putt.' She then tapped in the five-footer for a birdie. Having the honors, she drove first on the second hole, knocked the heck out of the ball, and it landed nearly 300 yards away smack in the middle of the fairway. For the rest of the round the statuesque blonde continued to amaze the guys, quietly and methodically shooting for par or less on every hole. When they arrived at the 18th green, the blonde was three under par, and had a very nasty 12-foot putt on an undulating green for a par. She turned to the three guys and said, 'I really want to thank you all for not acting like a bunch of chauvinists and telling me what club to use or how to play a shot, but I need this putt for a 69 and I'd really like to break 70 on this course. If any one of you can tell me how to make par on this hole I'll take him back to my apartment, pour some 35-year-old Single Malt Strath Mill Scotch in him, fix him a steak dinner and then show him a very good time the rest of the night.' The yuppie son jumped at the thought! He strolled across the green, carefully eyeing the line of the putt and finally said, 'Honey, aim about 6 inches to the right of the hole and hit it firm. It will get over that little hump and break right into the cup.' The father knelt down and sighted the putt using his putter as a plumb. 'Don't listen to the kid, darlin', you want to hit it softly 10 inches to the right and let it run left down that little hogback, so it falls into the cup.' The old gray-haired grandfather walked over to the blonde's ball, picked it up and handed it to her and said, 'That's a gimme, sweetheart’. The blonde smiled and said, 'Your car or mine?' OLD AGE AND TREACHERY WILL OVERCOME YOUTH AND SKILL EVERY TIME.

Biggest difference for me so far is actually starting my putts on line. Which surprised me; my own understanding of the groove technology had me thinking I'd see more improvement in the way of distance control, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how true the ER2B rolls! I've done some head to head testing between my current gamer and the ER2B, again, I've been really surprised at my findings! I was honestly a little skeptical that there'd be much of a difference between the two...but pleasantly surprised. More details to come in my Phase 2!

74 10/14 Fir 12/18 Gir 32 Putts Drove down to play Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles to celebrate what would have been my Dad's 72 birthday. Prefect day, 83* with very little wind. Struggled a little bit on the front sans a perfect 3 shot eagle. Hit it well on the back nine. It was one of those rounds where it felt like I didn't play great but upon reflection it was pretty solid.

The single best tip I ever received was from my best friend and golf nemesis since starting at age 7. He wasn’t a long hitter and for 5-6 years, he absolutely owned me; most notably on the green with the hands down best putting stroke I’ve ever seen. He finally pulled me aside one day and said, Steve, you’ve got to find some tempo in your stroke. Once you find tempo, make sure you accelerate though the ball. Everyone here has seen instructors talk and talk and talk about the keys to finding their swing. What he did that day was use the perfect language to communicate exactly what I needed to hear. It wasn’t what he said, rather how he said it. I have been an incredibly good putter since that day and I’ve convinced myself that I can make anything inside 10’. With that said, my season just ended. I hust had a lump removed from my forearm for analysis. Turned out to be just a glob of fat, hopefully nothing. I have them all over my body so checking them one by one. So 2 weeks then the stitches come out. Then snowboarding starts

Well, it's not anything new, or anything you've not heard before, but I typically forget these two fundamentals at least 18 times a round. It's the only lesson my Dad ever gave me as a kid, and pretty much everything is self taught, but the first two things my old man every said to me were, "keep your head down and your left arm straight." Interestingly enough, these two fundamental thoughts are the foundation of any good golf swing. And generally if I can remember to do these two things, I make a good swing and solid contact and pull off a good shot. But more often then not I am distracted. Distracted by the weather. (Man, it's so freaking hot today, I'm sweating bullets, or it's windy and I'm thinking about how many extra yards to factor into a shot because of the wind in my face, or it's too cold and I'm struggling with whether I should wear that extra pullover, or leave it off. I think the weather is the biggest distractor in golf honestly.) Distracted by the cart girl. (I'll leave this one to your imagination, but you know the drill; you are cruising along, and -1 after 5 holes when all of a sudden, here comes Chelsea the cart girl in her yoga pants and tank top, ready to serve you an overpriced PowerAde or beer. Then after she leaves you go double bogey, bogey, bogey, because your mind is still focused on her.) Distracted by the golf course. (Man that was just a crappy lie I had on that last fairway. It's not my golf swing or the clubs I am using, but this stupid golf course is so messed up that I can't hit a decent shot to save my life.) Distracted by my playing partners (Geez, I've been in the woods on every hole looking for this dude's ball. Can he not hit a fairway sometime today? Or, you know the guy, he's a Lee Trevino knock off, who never shuts up. Just talks and talks and talks, no matter where or when. Can he please just shut up sometime today? Honestly, there are so many variables with playing partners that when you find a dude you are comfortable playing golf with you become lifelong friends, and find ways to tee it up with him as often as possible. Meanwhile, the dude you can't stand, well, that free round at that primo course I will just pass on, because I'd rather have a colonoscopy then be forced to play another round of golf with that asshat.) Distracted by your cell phone. (Now this one isn't typically me, as I stick my phone in the bag and put it on vibrate, never to be looked at again until we are in the parking lot throwing our clubs in the car after the round. But more and more I see people that are simply glued to their phones all round long. And maybe I am old school, but man, that's why I play golf, to get away from cellphones and distractions, and all of life's BS. And if you are reading this and you are glued to your phone all round long, for whatever reason; perhaps it's time to reassess your life and priorities. What did you do before cellphones on the golf course? And I've actually trained my wife that she can try and text me during a round, but she knows I won't see it until I am done playing. Heck, there used to be a rule at a lot of private clubs that did not allow cellphones on the golf course or even in the clubhouse. But now, that's pretty much not happening anymore as cellphones are like a virus that has infected just about anyone and everyone. The worst example of this behavior were the two guys I got paired up with while they were on vacation. I had to tell them that it was their turn to hit as they were so engrossed in their phones that I think they forgot they were actually there to play golf.)

My problem isn't with the efforts to steal signs, its with the efforts to unbalance the playing field. When a home team sets up the video link between the centerfield cam and its own dugout, its trying to create an advantage that the visitors simply cannot have. If they're willing to beam those same videos into the visitors' clubhouse, that would seem reasonably fair. Of course, the pitchers for both teams might have a little issue with that.

I’m in the camp of playing to the edge of the rules - it’s up to the umps to determine what is breaking a rule and what is not, I’m just going to play as hard as I can, run everything out and hope for the best. In regards to this incident I think it’s a stupid unenforceable rule. It’s not quite as dumb as having NFL teams in Possession of footballs and expecting them to not tamper with them or having a multi billion dollar industry without full time professional officials but it’s close. Just know that your signals could be stolen and act accordingly. There are lots of suitable remedies - calling a curve and sticking a 95 mph heater under a few guys chins jumps to mind. As Bucky said it is about 50-50 between luck and skill. In another league I’m in, I was projected to win by 40 points cuz the guy never switched his lineup. Unfortunately my QB Watson was outscored by Garrapallo by 32 points and Edelman had more passing touchdowns than Watson. I still have 2 players left but I’m down 60 in a non ppr league. Meanwhile, I just ordered another 2 dozen MTB-X in yellow....even though I still have 4 dozen white MTB-X in standby. They work great for me. Just goes to show that just because a ball works well for one person, it may not work for the next.

I was disappointed with my 2019 as well. There were many days I started out playing well and then I had a blowup(s) hole which messed with my head then several holes to recover. Thanks everyone, had a good relaxed day. Hoping 51 treats me better than 50. @Kenny B the weather here has been unseasonably cool. My daughter is travelling to Seattle on 30 November for a basketball trip and when I looked on Thursday it was the same temperature as here. I'm expecting things to get warmer over the next week or so, and hopefully she won't come across severe cold.

For me, I became aware of MGS after looking for some DTC vs big boy golf balls. Then looked around a little more and found a solid community with a focus on spreading honest info on golf & equipment. I also don't know anyone personally who's much into golf, so I really like having a community to geek out on golf with me. And there's an extreme wealth of knowledge that I'm grateful to be able to glean from. Appreciate y'all!

Well now that my company has been sold and delisted from the Nasdaq I can let the cat out of the bag. I have decided to not stay on as the CFO with the new owners and have elected to move onto a new venture. As I have gone through the sale process I met a lot of people along the way that have told me there is a market for me as a consultant that could be quite lucrative and allow me some more family time as well as not having to do a traditional office job. I figured now is as good a time as any to give it a shot and see if over the next year or two I can build this into something that I can work on full time. With that being said I will be done in my current role within the next 30 days and then will be taking on a consulting role at for the company for the next six months along with working on some other consulting roles outside of the gaming industry. Never thought this would be the path that I would choose but having a few years of guaranteed income from my current contract will at least allow me time to see if this is for me or if I want to go back to the traditional work force. Excited to give something new a try and see what fruit it may bear and worse case I make a few extra bucks outside of my normal salary as well as get some family and time at home. I have been away or traveling way too much over the last 10 years so now I get to enjoy some of the perks that the last decade away has afforded me. I'd have to say 2019 so far has been a successful year all around. IOW - it didn't suck. As far as golf is concerned I played well and consistent. I went through a few short slumps but they didn't last more than a week or two it seemed. (but they felt longer - LOL) I had dreams of grandeur of shooting under par a few times but each time I couldn't get out of my way and let it happen. (picture two trains colliding) But overall I'm pleased. I'll turn 65 in February and my health is good and I remain injury and ailment free. Looking forward to 2020.

Being a tester is a privilege that is not given but earned through forum participation and honesty. Testing is fun however it also includes hours of working with a product. Reviewers at MGS come from all walks of life and their opinions are interesting. Have I been influenced by reviews, absolutely! The results from the top driver, irons, hybrids, putter, etc. are no joke. Many hours and balls struck with the best equipment available for analyzing results prove a point. It's unlike a hog looking through a corn bin for the ear that came from a prominent brand, it's more like the fat rascal finding the ear that has the most nutrients.

Regardless of the score if you enjoyed your time on the course then it’s a good day and a good year.

All-in-all, the biggest component of keeping a handicap is practice. I went from a 7 into the fives changing equipment numerous times, even multiple times a year, even testing for MGS. I had lessons from a coach in Louisiana and Texas in the same year on my journey to sub-6.... The reason I got there, and was there for a couple seasons, was because I was at the range twice a week, and playing just about every Friday. Simply, practice-time, and number of rounds are the major components missing this year. I did get to play some of the best tracks ever this year, though!!! Valhalla?! Sandpiper in Santa Barbara on the Pacific?! Barton Creek again?! I played in 6 different states, and got to play some incredible courses. I played all of those courses better than my home course as they were all actually kept in good shape and had grass in the fairways! [emoji23] The game sucked, but where I played was incredible! I even got in a round with a fellow MGS’er, which was awesome!!!! I’ll get it back.... Probably with a different set of irons, though..... While I would have liked to see that type of detail as well. The gcquad vs the Doppler units would probably be easy since the are in different positions. Wonder how they compared the skytrak since it would be in a similar position. A table showing x number of driver, long iron, mid iron, wedge, and distance wedge shots at different swing speeds would have been a nice comparison chart. To me it seems like unless you are purchasing a skytrak it is best to pass at this time; especially for me since I want to practice distance wedge shots.

I’m relatively new to the forum, though I’ve been a fan of the website for awhile. I love the data provided on the site, it really helps me to have confidence in what I’m looking to get. I was given an opportunity to do a ball test as well, and it is a lot of fun! It is a great experience to hone in on the little details of a product, and truly get a better understanding of how differences in equipment impact your game. Not only that, it’s an awesome feeling to know that you might be helping others gain insight into a product. I’ve always been one to nerd out over the little details, and have been learning a lot about club making and club fitting. Well... did some tinkering with some lead tape on the irons. Added about 6-7g on the 7, 8, 9, PW. Played this morning and man, huge difference in ball flight. My swing felt much smoother and the ball had no erratic snaps to the left or right. Absolutely loving the difference. Now to try it out with the 5, 6, and AW.
