Played my last round up at the Monterey Peninsula at a little muni track called Pacific Grove. Talk about a hidden gem... shot well as I had a great ball striking week up here, so I won’t bore you with any details, but rather a few pics of a track that charged me $59 with the cart...

Oh the memories!! I loved the PG links when we lived in PG. Another really fun track is Monterey Pines. True story: When playing some of the other courses in the area, I had run into some folks from across the pond in both directions. They had come to play Pebble. Unbeknownst to them, you can't just play Pebble without some major pre planning and some major mullah. They were both nearly heart broken. I told them both to make a point to play PG before they left. I gave them my email to let me know how the round went. Both wrote me back thanking me for saving their trip. We also really miss the peninsula deer. Such a magical place. the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

    How'd you play?

Played 9 yesterday on a reasonably mild day .. upper 40s, almost no breeze .. and then considering it "might be the last for a while" we decided to add a 4-hole loop on the Back 9. Didn't score all that great .. a few pars, a few bogeys and doubles and two triples .. but felt like I had more good shots than usual, especially with short irons and wedges. Even got up and down out of the one greenside bunker I hit But just couldn't string the good shots together; eg. a good tee shot followed by a chunked or flubbed approach; a good approach followed by a mis-read or mis-hit putt; ..... You know what I mean..!

  5. YEAH! Thanks to @GolfSub70 and especially their fearless leader Jason. I have to wait until the thumb heals but I can't wait to hit this one. I asked that they not put a grip on because of my obsession with Pure grips, so they sent me a hat instead. As well as some tees and a nice personal note. And I was very happy to see that I could get an Even Flow Blue shaft for a $20 upgrade.

All this coming out lately on cheating has floored me. Maybe I lived in a shell most of my life. My old man who was a pro taught me integrity and always remain above reproach in golf as well as life. He also taught me to "square my actions" before doing anything with my opponents especially in big money matches. Really I have never seen the opportunity to call a penalty on an opponent during my Mini Tour days. Everyone I played with was straight up as far as I saw. As far as the Sergio deal at Bethpage I sided with Sergio on that one. The fans were simply rude to him and were an embarrassment to the State of NY as well as America. Had I been in his position I would have told those guys. After this round see me and we will find an open course and play for 100 grand a hole and how many do you need up a side? Further more at the time had I been in charge no pro golf events would have been played in NY state for at least 5 years or how ever much time it took to get people under control. Of course sadly to say worse than that goes on at events everywhere now days. Ryder Cup events I have trouble getting geared up for. I mean I am an American true blue but I like and respect players on both sides after all I am a golf fan. On that hand I always stood up for Colin Montgomerie for some reason liked and respected him. Met him in real life a few years ago in Florida. Told him I was one American that stood up for him and I would be honored to buy him a Johnnie Walker Scotch. He took me up on that. found him to be a likable guy. As usual in his form he proposed a toast to " the only American who likes me" Got to chat with him some 15 minutes or so. For some reason I have always stood up for the person everyone picks on

  7. ... Haha reminds me of my cousin. He has 3 HIO's and has never broken 100. I was with him when he hit a 5 wood worm burner down a hill, hopped over a small creek, rolled up onto the green and in the hole. I was giving him a stroke and hit an 8 iron to 5 feet, made the birdie putt and lost the hole by 2 strokes. He said "I don't care if you tell people I topped a 5 wood down the hill for an ace, but please don't tell them I used a 5 wood from 158 yds. ... A few years late he hit a 30 yd slice on a short par 3 that went in the side of the hole. The Golf Gods obviously have a sense of humor.

  8. I would choose lowest score, provided that it was just to reach a scoring milestone you've never reached. I have five rounds in the 80's, but I've never even sniffed a score in the 70's. Right now a 79 would be worth more to me than a hole in one. My personal opinion is that a low score is the culmination of practice paying off and not just one lucky shot. I think I was just tired from 36 holes the previous day. I think my biggest takeaway from this round is to not try and do too much. 1 double bogey in a round is too much, let alone three. I will say that the wind was blowing all day long so it made club selection a challenge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  13. I've been fortunate enough to have both. I've had two aces and enough rounds in the 60's that I don't remember all of them. We aren't talking 100's but we are talking 40 or 50. My two lowest rounds were 66 and 68 and those both came in competition, the 68 on a fairly difficult course - the 66 was on a not so tough par 70 and it was match play. My opponent gave me a few putts none of which were likely to be missed until the one that he wanted to give me on 18 - I don't recall how long it was other than it was miss-able. I begged him to rescind the concession and after I explained why, he did. I'd love another round in the 60's. I shot a 70 earlier this season so close. I think that I still may have one a two in me so long as I play the proper set of tees. Right now I would rather log another Ace. If I make it to 70 and am still healthy enough I'd love to shoot my age sometime. That would be cool. I played with a guy in my golf league who was in his early 80's and shot his age regularly, God rest his soul.

  14. I've had 4 aces but a round in the 60's is far more satisfying. In fact, my first HIO was in 1993. I still had no real control over my golf ball and I remember taking 4 or 5 practice swings until I felt something akin to confidence and saying "if I can just repeat that, it will be good." I had 131 yards and I hit my Titleist Tour Balata with my Lnyx Parallax 9 iron right into the hole and shot 87 on the day. Exciting? Absolutely. Lucky? Completely! Shooting a solid score in the 60's is a completely different animal and something I find infinitely more satisfying. That said, I haven't had a hole in one in probably 15 years and I've never really had a great score with an ace on the card so a combination of the two would be great :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  15. Definitely a round in the 60s for me. My low round is 73, which I've done four or five times. My low nine is 34 (-2), but that came after a 42. I feel that apple in my throat when I'm around even par on the 16th tee. I've had two holes in one so far, and a full-shot hole out eagle. Interestingly enough - I caddied for nine years; I probably saw north of 3,000 rounds as a caddy. I never saw a hole in one. To be fair, though, the course I caddied at did only have three par threes. I've never seen one from a playing partner either. And I've seen both of my daughters hit the stick on par threes.

    Bounce issues

I know I am late to this party but will comment--- One thing that was not mentioned is the difference between bounce and effective bounce. I recommend anyone order the Maltby Video from Golf Works that is called How Wedges Work. It is inexpensive and a wealth of knowledge. One thing that has to do with effective bounce is the sole design and there is no industry standard of how to measure bounce "correctly" Maltby also sells a set of triangular gauges that help measure bounce some. I will cheat and use those but I can use a protractor and straight edge too. There are also different leading edge grinds on wedges too and depending on one's Angle of Attack that can have overall effect too. Personally because of the type clubs I play I use overall low bounce wedges in all conditions. But my swing is my own from all the years I have played. I will tell you on my 60 I use a Scratch JLM / EGG grind which has a scalloped edge on the leading edge of the sole and a low sharp leading edge. That club is only used on green side bunker shots. I also use a very steep AOA on green side bunker shots. Right now I am not using a Scratch wedge but have several of my 588s ground like that. In fact right now believe it or not I am using an old Ping Zing 60 that has the exact grind from the factory. Just figured I would give my insight but will give a disclaimer--- Jut because it works for me does not mean it will work for anyone else

  18. Spent some quality time on the range this morning with the irons. Once I got the feel of the setup, one small adjustment to the takeaway and transition, and it was bombs away right down the line. I did finally see a couple of VERY high ball flight shots. But heck, I'll take the very high part if it is down the target line and on the yardage.

  20. I got to the range this morning to work on what my coach gave me during my lesson yesterday. Spent a large bucket practicing a combination of 1/2, 3/4 and full swings with my new grip and pressure shift. Was a great bucket! I lost a little club head speed because I was more focused on getting the grip and shift right, but I didn't really lose any distance at all. By far the most shots hit out of the center of the face in my life, and I bet I'll have gained at least a club's length once I start ramping the speed back up. Amazing how two small changes can have such a huge impact on the swing!

  21. Golf saved my life, I was 357 lbs, had diabetes, diabetic retinopathy (which basically means I was going blind) diabetic neuropathy, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I was taking weight loss classes at Kaiser at mr Dr’s suggestion. They asked us to draw a picture. A picture of us when we were young and healthy. I drew a stick figure of me riding a bicycle. She asked if I miss riding bicycle’s. I said no but I miss playing Golf. She said I should go play Golf, I said I can’t I can’t even walk 9 holes without getting exhausted. She said so walk 3 then work your way up to 6. Then 9 and eventually 18. Since then I’ve lost 140 pounds. I am off almost all of my Meds. Just had my eyes checked and they are good. Went from a size 56 waist to 36. Thanks Golf.

Today was an outstanding day for golf in Valdosta, Georgia. Played 36 at Kinderlou, first with my solo round in the morning where I was first off and never saw another golfer all round as I walked all 18. Personal best at my home course by four shots. It was just one of those awesome rounds where everything just clicked. And a special shoutout to my buddy @ga_pike for letting me test these Titleist EXP-01 balls. They are fantastic! Oh, and Hail Southern!!! By the way, the EXP-01 has some serious distance on them as well as some fantastic spin on approach shots. The ball stops right where it lands. This pic was taken after a 7 iron approach shot. And then reality set in this afternoon as my game returned to normal. Still, with 72 degrees and bright sunshine, do you honestly expect me NOT to be playing golf? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Everything but the putter worked terrific. Driver was straight and long. 3 W was straight, 3H had a little draw on it. The irons (with steel shafts) were about a 1/2 club short but mostly straight, after a few “Mickey Mantles”. I shot 92, but that was with 6 three putts. Now you know why I didn’t like the putter....LOL #CobraCONNECT using the new F8’s from Cobra Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  26. Cobra sent out a media kit for the new Speedzone drivers (full story: here). As seems to be the case lately, I was traveling when it arrived, but I shot some photos today, primarily so you could see the difference in the shape/footprint of the standard model and the Xtreme. I also was messing with some lightroom presets and inadvertently transformed the version into the white, so you get a reasonable idea of what that one looks like too.

  28. For me they are a so so ball. I had no expectations because they are and experimental ball. I got to much release on the greens with chips/pitches and scoring irons. Off the tee they were fine, about what I was getting with Prov1. On one of the balls i played durability wasn’t as good as the prov. I think someone who likes a softer ball would enjoy these.

That Maltby book or CD would be beneficial to you to help understand. I have messed with wedge grinds for years and that CD helped enlighten me on exactly why I was learning what I was learning. It is sorta complicated with me but when I learn something on my own I want to know why and if my perspective was correct

I can't like this post enough. Having been born in New Jersey, I recognize the snobbery and arrogance oozing from that part of the world. It's a fake privilege that says to the rest of the world, "We not only think we are better than you, but we KNOW we are." At least, that's how they think up there, and anyone who doesn't totally agree with them gets treated like a 2nd or 3rd class person. I would also venture to say that with extremely rare exception, most tour pros are the nicest, kindest people you will ever meet, no matter where they are from. Sure, everyone has a bad day in life, and tour pros are no exception, but my personal experience in meeting them has always been very positive. Thanks for posting your experiences @BIG STU

  33. I've learned that: I'm an awful driver of the golf ball. On days I can hit driver and keep it on the golf course, I can play pretty well and challenge my personal best. I hit my 4 iron and 5 iron the same distance. Except when I hit my 4 iron shorter. I intended the HL4 18* to replace the 4 iron, but I have a big gap between it and the 5i, so I think there's another HL4 in my future. My iron game could use some work, but it's not terrible. I'm a pretty good putter.

  38. First, I’m a career Navy man. I enlisted in 2000, got commissioned in 2010 and will retire in 2023. I’ve been playing golf pretty much the entire time I’ve been in the service, aside from deployments and other periods of time that I have resulted in a break from the game. I learned how to play from a friend I was stationed with early on and have been hooked ever since! I’ve been fortunate enough to be stationed in several golf friendly locations to include Hawaii, Augusta, Virginia Beach, Monterey and San Diego. As a result, I’ve managed to play some amazing courses . Like many folks around here, I love playing the game, talking the game and enjoying all the great equipment that’s available these days. I’ve been on several golf forums, but ultimately settled at MGS for the content, excellent equipment and gear reviews and a forum that is very friendly! Golf is a huge part of my life and if I’m not playing, I’m reading about it or trying to improve my game. I aim to be a good ambassador of the game, and a major part of that is sharing my experiences around the MGS forums!

  40. I grew-up in the shadow of my father, a teacher/coach of 45 years. Whatever sport he was coaching, I was at practice, and games/matches. I was with him as much as I could be. After long Michigan winters in the gym hooping, I would go to the golf course with my Dad’s golf teams. He would bring an old set for me to hit balls here-and-there on the course, and he’d even let me drive the cart a bit. These were my favorite days... If he had $.50 in his pocket at the end of practice, he’d let me get a Hostess Apple Pie!!! Years later, I’d visit him in retirement, and we’d golf every day, and instead of a Hostess pie, we’d grab a tuna sandwich at the turn... My love for golf grew because of my Dad. I joined MGS to keep-up with the launches, but to also continue a “relationship” with others through golf. My Dad’s not here anymore, but MGS’ers have become family, even playing with them when I travel. MGS is home, and I love to get on here everyday and see what’s going-on. 41. LOL just thought about something funny. You said in your original post you were thinking of fixing the seam with pinstripe tape. For me I would use electrical tape or medical adhesive tape. On my end it would be for kicks and giggles since most around my home course think I have a screw loose or am a nut case. I can hear it now " That Stu has flipped out he has a putter with half a graphite shaft taped together with tape" Now one thing I can tell you is if you are concerned with graphics on the shaft you can conceal by using electrical shrink wrap. There is not enough heat involved to hurt the shaft's integrity or the epoxy bond. In fact you can melt the stuff with a hair dryer. Lots of DIY guys on WRX have custom colored shafts like that. I have not tried it myself personally because I am not into all of that but just offered a suggestion

I find my SC200 is not very accurate in these shorter distances and since they require a higher level of short game precision - the LRF trumps the SC200. Now as to your SC not liking you in practice - they do have LM Anonymous meetings

  44. I thought I was going to have this finished today, but the grip I ordered has been delayed by USPS. The rest is done, however: I'll do more of a play by play of the build when I have a keyboard handy. One addition: there's a small piece of shrinkwrap at the joint. It's covering a tiny bit of paint chipping on the graphite, giving it a cleaner look.
